Khanewal faces spree of robberies, murder
In the most brazen acts, armed robbers looted cash, mobile phones, a motorcycle and even a tractor-trolley loaded with maize, while one man succumbed to injuries suffered in a shooting incident.
According to the Khanewal police record, two armed men looted Rs20,000 in cash and a mobile phone from a fast food outlet in the busy Football Chowk area.
In another incident, two robbers on the city outskirts near Pull Nikaso snatched Rs80,000 from a citizen named Abid Hussain.
In the 46/10-R area in the jurisdiction of Khanewal Saddar Police Station, three robbers on two motorcycles intercepted a man named Imran Baloch and forcibly took away his new motorcycle.
Meanwhile, in the Sarai Sidhu police limits, three robbers in a car intercepted a tractor-trolley loaded with maize enroute to a feed mill on Multan Road. They tied the driver, Ashfaq, with ropes and left him in a field before fleeing with the vehicle.
Separately, in Kamran Colony, falling under Khanewal City Police Station, a man named Irshad Ahmed, injured in a recent firing incident over a monetary dispute, succumbed to his injuries in Nishtar Hospital in Multan.
Khanewal police say investigations and operations are under way to apprehend those involved in the incidents.
Meanwhile, in the village of 68 Mariwala nedar Khanewal, a young man cutting a tree was taken by influential persons to their camp, stripped, subjected to torture. The attackers also allegedly attempted to sexually assault the victim.
The accused continued to thrash the victim while recording a video of his ordeal.

Ramna police station attack case: IHC acquits four PTI workers
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) accepting appeals of four Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters, against their sentence awarded in Ramna police station attack, arson and siege case of May 9, ordered to release them. A division bench of Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro and Justice Azam Khan on Thursday heard the appeals against 10-year imprisonment sentence of convict Sohail Khan and others. During the hearing, lawyers Babar Awan, Sardar Masroof, Advocate Amina Ali and others appeared on behalf of the petitioners. PTI founder Imran Khan's sister, Aleema Khan, was also present in court. She met with the workers and other party supporters, expressing strong solidarity with those accused in the May 9 incidents. After hearing the arguments, the IHC bench acquitted the four PTI workers previously convicted in the May 9 Ramna police station attack case. The bench ordered to release them after the prosecution was unable to prove their presence at the scene of the protest based on the witnesses' accounts. The convicts had been charged under Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) Sections 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 186 (obstructing official duty), 188 (disobeying order of a public servant), 324 (attempted murder), 353 (assault on public servants), 436 (arson) and 440 (mischief); Section 144 of CrPC; and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), 1997. They were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment under Section 7 ATA, five years under Section 324 of PPC, four under Section 436, two each under Sections 353 and 148. Additionally, the convicts were sentenced to four years in prison and fined Rs40,000 for burning a motorcycle under Section 426 (punishment for mischief); and a separate sentence of four years in prison and a fine of Rs40,000 under Section 440 (mischief committed after preparation made for causing death or hurt) for vandalising a police station. A sentence of three-month imprisonment was imposed for interfering in the work of the police under Section 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), one month for violating Section 144 (joining unlawful assembly armed with a deadly weapon), and two years for committing a crime in a group under Section 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of an offence committed in prosecution of common object). At the onset of the proceedings, Babar Awan argued that out of nine prosecution witnesses, only one witness Assistant Sub-Inspector Muhammad Sharif was able to identify the accused. Three rare blackbucks stolen from Jhang Wildlife Park
The minimum market value of a blackbuck is estimated at Rs200,000 with the park housing seven animals. photo: file Three rare female blackbucks were stolen from Jhang Wildlife Park during the night between Wednesday and Thursday, sparking concerns over the park's security and management. A two-member inquiry committee has been constituted on the orders of the Director General of Wildlife to investigate the incident. An FIR has also been registered regarding the theft. According to information received by The Express Tribune, the theft was discovered the following morning when staff entered the blackbuck enclosure to provide feed and noticed the animals were missing. Deputy Chief Wildlife Ranger Headquarters confirmed that a departmental inquiry is underway under the supervision of Dr. Misbah Sarwar, a senior female officer in the department. The two-member committee is expected to submit its report within three days. "The culprits involved in the theft will be dealt with strictly under the law," said the official. "Departmental action will also be taken against staff found guilty of negligence." It has also emerged that the senior staff of the Jhang Wildlife Park is currently away for official training. In their absence, staff recruited under the Green Pakistan Programme had been assigned duty. Their contracts, however, expired on June 30, raising further concerns about the management and oversight at the park during the time of the incident. Wildlife officials stated that the park was home to a total of seven blackbuck, out of which three female animals have been reported missing. The minimum market value of a single blackbuck is estimated at Rs. 200,000. However, sources said that four animals were allegedly stolen, one male and three females although officials maintain that only three females were taken.

Retailer held for fleecing BISP beneficiary
A monitoring team of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has apprehended a retailer for making an illegal deduction of Rs11,000 from the amount granted to a woman. The team immediately deactivated the payment device used by the retail service provider, Waqar. The action was taken amid allegations of corruption in the disbursement of BISP financial assistance to deserving women in Khanewal. A beneficiary of the social support programme, named Hayat, was deprived of Rs11,000 by the retailer at Lahore Mor. Upon receiving the complaint, the BISP monitoring team acted promptly, recovered the deducted amount and returned it to the recipient. Departmental action was taken by shutting down the retailer's device. In another incident in Zahoorabad, the team recovered dozens of national identity cards from a retailer named Tayyab, but no further action was taken despite evident violations of the relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs). According to sources, the retailers involved in malpractices collect CNICs from widows and other deserving women through their agents, withdraw their funds, and charge them Rs1,000 to Rs2,000 per transaction. There are around 100 sanctioned BISP aid disbursement facilities in Khanewal. However, only three devices have bean activated allegedly due to collusion between franchise owners and officials, the sources said. The women are forced to wait in harsh weather conditions without adequate facilities, but no effective action is taken by the authorities.
