Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid melds macho looks with frugal performance

TimesLIVE09-06-2025
Hyundai has officially launched its new fifth-generation seven-seat Santa Fe model in SA.
Powered by a petrol engine, it has been launched as a single Santa Fe Hybrid Elite AWD model, the first in the country.
Hyundai's engineers certainly had time to get the large seven-seat formula right after the Palisade model, which continues to be sold alongside the new model, though not for long as its retirement is planned before year-end.
The largest Santa Fe model yet wears a dramatically different, boxier, corporate suit characterised by plenty of H-motifs as LED DRLs and rear light clusters, prominent roof rails, mud guards and 20-inch alloys. It's more macho than the softer previous generations, and the new American SUV looks should be everyone's cup of tea.
The 4,830mm length, 1,900mm width, 1,770mm height and a 2,815mm wheel base leaves it marginally smaller than its Palisade and Staria cousins as large size people carriers in the harem, but inside it's a different story. You enter the cabin easily through large doors, into an atmosphere that's more luxury shuttle than Mom's taxi.

Rovanpera delights home crowd with Rally of Finland victory

Finland's Kalle Rovanpera boosted his bid for a third world rally championship title with a dominant win in front of his home fans in the Rally of Finland on Sunday. The 24-year-old Toyota driver, world champion in 2022/23, competing in his birthplace swept the points, securing 35, having also won the 'Power Stage' and the 'Super Sunday' to move into second place, just three points off series leader Elfyn Evans. Rovanpera, winning his home rally for the first time, recorded his 17th career win, second this term, beating two other Toyota drivers Japan's Takamoto Katsuta and Sebastien Ogier of France. Ogier lies in third place overall, 13 points adrift of Evans, who finished fourth and replaced Ott Tanak on top of the title standings as the Estonian endured a nightmare race and finished 10th. The Hyundai driver's hopes of victory had disappeared when he was slapped with a five-minute penalty after an incident on Friday. Tanak left the control zone after tyre scanning before receiving permission from a scrutineer and struck the official with his front bumper resulting in minor injuries. His sanction also carries a suspended penalty of 35 championship points. The title race looks set to go down to the wire with just five races remaining, though, defending champion Thierry Neuville's hopes of defending his crown dimmed further as he finished sixth. The drivers move on to the Rally of Paraguay, which runs from August 28-31.

WATCH: Fast and familiar? – ‘Fast & Furious' Star Noel G revs into Mzansi for Idle Auto Expo

He's the man behind one of the most recognisable faces in street-racing cinema, and now, American actor Noel Gugliemi, better known as Hector from The Fast and the Furious, is in town for the Idle Auto Expo at Montecasino this weekend. Famed American actor Noel Gugliemi, best known as Hector from the iconic Fast & Furious franchise, is bringing Hollywood energy to Montecasino this weekend as he headlines the Idle Auto Expo. Known for his roles in Training Day, Bruce Almighty, and the Fast & Furious franchise, the very jovial and friendly Noel is no stranger to high-octane action and street-racing culture. But this is his very first visit to South Africa, and it's already proving to be a memorable ride. From Hollywood to Montecasino: Fast & Furious Star Noel G arrives in SA Fast & Furious star Noel Gugliemi aka Hector, at the Palazzo hotel, Montecasino, on 30 July 2025. The movie star is in Johannesburg ahead of the Idle Auto Expo where he is the special guest. The Expo takes place from 1-3 August 2025. 'My first time here, I don't know anything about anything!' he joked. ALSO READ:'Boo Bear' Calven Robinson undergoes cosmetic eyebrow surgery [PICS] 'We call it drifting out there. Street shows, with untrained drivers. In America, it's not legal, so safety is a big thing.' Noel G opens up about his car collection The first car he ever owned? A modest light green Ford Pinto. But these days, his garage tells a very different story. His collection includes a Toyota Supra, a Toyota Camry truck, and a rebuilt 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX – a replica of the model the late Paul Walker drove in The Fast and the Furious. 'I'm not a rebuilder, but I conceptualise the look,' he explained. 'I also have low rider bikes. My car crush? A Honda.' 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX from the Fast and Furious movie. 'Most directors are cool with it. A few say no, but it's who I am.' His fondest memory? Filming with Paul Walker. 'Those early movies felt real, we were a family,' he recalls. 'The director encouraged us to bond. That's how I got to know Paul.' Today, he still keeps in touch with Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Paul's brother Cody Walker. And when it comes to the newer Fast movies, he admits he's not a fan. 'When they took cars to space, I was out. It's too unrealistic now. I love the originals – the racing, the muscle cars, the street culture. That was real.' Fans can catch Noel G at the Idle Auto Expo this weekend at Montecasino, where muscle, motors and memories collide. South Korea carmaker shares slip after US trade deal

Shares of South Korean carmakers Hyundai and Kia fell on Thursday after US President Donald Trump said the US will charge a 15% tariff on imports from South Korea, including cars, as part of a trade deal. While the agreement reduces car tariffs from 25%, it removes the 2.5% advantage in tariffs that South Korean carmakers had enjoyed over Japanese rivals under the Korea-US free trade deal. Some analysts said the share falls may have been driven by profit-taking as news of the tariffs was already factored in after South Korean carmaker shares surged last week after news that Trump agreed to reduce Japanese car imports to 15%, a move that stoked optimism about a similar deal for Seoul. South Korea's auto association said the tariff cuts are 'fortunate' and remove uncertainty and create a level playing ground with Japanese and European rivals. Hyundai Motor said the deal 'validates our unwavering confidence in the US market and our commitment to American manufacturing.' Hyundai Motor Group in March announced a $21bn (R377.2bn) investment in the US with Trump at the White House, including a $5.8bn (R104bn) steel factory and an expansion of Hyundai Motor's new car factory in Georgia. Before Washington imposed 25% car tariffs in April, there were zero tariffs on most South Korean car imports under a bilateral trade deal, while there was a 2.5% tariff on Japanese car imports. South Korean negotiators demanded 12.5% car tariffs, but Trump wanted the rate to be 15%, the presidential office said. Hyundai shares fell 4.5% and Kia stock lost 6.6%.
