VW's Competitors Should Fear The Upcoming ID2 GTI Seen In Spy Shots, Plus Our Render
While a VW e-Golf GTI is expected to be released eventually, the ID.2 GTI will be Volkswagen's first ever all-electric model to bear the iconic GTI nameplate, and thus has a vast legacy to live up to. Thanks to these highly detailed spy shots, we can all rest assured knowing that, at the very least, the VW ID.2 GTI won't be so bloated. With its smartly compact proportions and short wheelbase, it's safe to say that this electric GTI will be a blast to throw around tight corners–a true staple of any authentic GTI.
As a hard-headed purist myself, there's no denying that the idea of a fully-electric hot hatch is ample grounds for skepticism. However, thanks to the precedent set by the lauded Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, which proved that a driver-focused electric hatchback really could put a smile on your face, my hopes are high for Volkswagen's entry into this new and exciting segment. I'll admit that I wish VW's integration of electric hot hatches into its lineup didn't mean its gas-powered sports models will likely be phased out entirely, but it's at least somewhat comforting to know that we won't be left entirely without that necessary "fun factor" that made hot hatches so appealing in the first place.
As the VW ID.2 GTI will be the German automaker's first-ever fully-electric performance model, its critical reception will truly be a "make or break" moment for the brand. If the model excites and demonstrates a genuinely well-executed effort, it could cement VW as a serious heavy-hitter in the segment, as it has been for so many years with models such as the Golf GTI and Polo GTI. On the other hand, if it lacks the passion and vibrance that buyers have come to expect from driver-oriented cars, it could cost VW a lot of the hype they'll need to maintain for the inevitable release of the e-Golf GTI. Until we see more from Volkswagen, we remain hopeful and optimistic that the brand's engineers will be able to translate their traditional hot hatch passion into a progressive and forward-thinking EV.

Volkswagen Q2 2025 global sales up 1.2%
Volkswagen Group has reported a 1.2% increase in global sales for the second quarter (Q2) of 2025, ending 30 June, compared to the same period last year, despite ongoing tariff concerns. The German carmaker's deliveries for the quarter totalled 2.27 million, driven by a 37.6% increase in all-electric vehicle (BEV) sales worldwide in Q2. The company observed sales growth in all markets except for North America and Western Europe, where deliveries dipped by 16.2% and 0.7%, respectively. For the first half (H1) of the year, Volkswagen's global vehicle deliveries totalled 4.41 million, marking a 1.3% growth compared to the same period previous year. Despite the overall positive trend, Volkswagen's BEV sales experienced regional variances. In Europe, VW Group BEV sales soared by 72.9% in the second quarter, and in the rest of the world, they increased by 49.3%. However, the US saw a 5.2% decrease, and China faced a more significant 32.6% drop in VW Group BEV deliveries. The company said its global BEV market share rose from 7% to 11% year-on-year (YoY) in H1, with a total of 465,500 deliveries, up 47% compared to H1 2024. Europe and the US registered growth of 89% and 24%, respectively, in H1 BEV sales. Conversely, China experienced a 34% decline in BEV development. In North America, deliveries to 461,900 customers marked a 6.7% decrease in the first half compared to the same period the previous year. The US, as the main market, faced an 8.5% decline in the first half of the year amid challenging conditions, contrasting with a 6.2% growth in the first quarter. South America stood out with the growth of 18.3% to 302,100 vehicles in the first half. Brazil, as the region's primary market, saw a 7.4% increase. The Asia-Pacific region, mainly impacted by competitive pressures in China, recorded a 1.3% decline to 1,470,900 vehicles. The 2.3% drop in China's deliveries was anticipated. Volkswagen Extended Executive Committee for Sales member Marco Schubert said: 'The Volkswagen Group continues to have strong momentum thanks to many newly launched models. This applies especially to all-electric vehicles, with global deliveries up by around 50% in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year. 'Overall, we were able to slightly increase our global deliveries by the end of June despite challenging conditions. Gains in South America and Europe more than offset the expected declines in China and North America.' FAW-Volkswagen, one of Volkswagen's main Chinese joint ventures, announced plans last month to produce two new EV models based on its Compact Main Platform (CMP) at its Tianjin plant starting in 2027. Volkswagen's EV Sales Are Booming. Its Cheapest Cars Aren't Even Out Yet
Finally, some happy days at the Volkswagen Group. The once-sluggish electric push is gaining real momentum. Multiple brands across the vast automotive conglomerate are reporting a significant surge in EV sales. Through June, global deliveries of purely electric vehicles rose by 47% to 465,500 units. This boom has increased the EV share of total deliveries from 7% to 11%. It's not just one company pulling the weight. Core brand Volkswagen saw EV sales climb by 14.3% to 192,600 units. Skoda's all-electric deliveries soared by 147.8% to 73,000 units, while SEAT and Cupra posted a combined triple-digit jump of 105.3%, reaching 37,600 EVs. Audi's electric sales rose by 32.3% to 101,400 units, and Porsche surged by 279% to 34,200, driven by strong demand for the electric Macan . Photo by: Volkswagen The ID.4 and ID.5 were the group's top-selling EVs through June, with combined sales of 84,900 units. The more affordable ID.3 hatchback, which isn't sold in North America, followed with 60,700 units. Rounding out the podium, the Audi Q4 E-Tron and its Sportback sibling generated 44,600 sales. The best part for VW? Its most affordable EVs haven't even launched yet. In 2026, the ID.2 will arrive with a starting price of around €25,000 ($29,300) in Germany, followed in 2027 by the even cheaper ID.1 at approximately €20,000 ($23,500). As per VW's usual strategy, several derivatives wearing different badges from sister brands will join the lineup. With more budget-friendly EVs on the way and a ninth-generation, electric-only Golf due before 2030, the future looks promising for the VW Group. It also helps that Tesla's downfall continues at an alarming rate. That said, competition extends beyond Elon Musk's company; Stellantis and Renault are also rapidly expanding their EV offerings to brace for a likely ban on new ICE cars in Europe from 2035. Chinese automakers are ramping up their presence across Europe and beyond, making it harder for VW to maintain its sales momentum. In the meantime, the VW Group's strong EV performance in the first half of the year contributed to a 1.3% rise in total deliveries, reaching 4.41 million vehicles. Plug-in hybrids also played a role, with PHEV sales increasing by 41% to 192,300 units. VW has improved its plug-in hybrid lineup by upgrading batteries, now offering up to 89 miles (143 kilometers) of electric range on select models. Photo by: Volkswagen But selling more cars alone won't fix everything. VW is aggressively cutting costs, including more than 35,000 job reductions in Germany by 2030. Domestic production capacity will be reduced by 734,000 units, partly by shifting Golf production to Mexico. The future of the Osnabrück plant is uncertain after the T-Roc Convertible is discontinued in mid-2027. VW will also cease car production in Dresden by the end of this year. These are just a few pieces of a sweeping restructuring plan outlined late last year. While the EV sales surge gives VW some breathing room, it also highlights an ongoing issue: profitability. The company recently admitted that making real money on electric cars remains challenging . Originally targeting cost parity with ICE vehicles this year, VW has now pushed that milestone to 2026. Once it cracks the code for EV cost efficiency, its electric offensive will likely accelerate even further. In the meantime, pressure is mounting to avoid hefty EU fleet emissions fines, potentially in the billions, so pushing EVs even harder is more than just good business; it's a regulatory necessity. VW ID Buzz sales resume after pair of recall fixes
.b-lead-art {display:none;} Volkswagen of America has fixes for a pair of unrelated recalls that halted sales of the ID Buzz electric minivan in the spring. Under the first recall, dated April 10, the brake system warning light on the instrument panel may display an incorrect symbol and color. VW said dealerships will perform a data container update along with a vehicle software update. The fix will take around one day to complete. The repair became available on June 6, according to a dealer communication document posted on NHTSA's website. The recall covered 5,637 vans in the U.S. and 771 in Canada, built between Sept. 9, 2024 and Feb. 11, 2025. The ID Buzz is assembled in Hanover, Germany. Under the second recall, dated April 23, NHTSA said the third-row bench seat in the ID Buzz, with two seat belts and two headrests, is wide enough for three passengers. But the calculated width of the seating surface exceeds the maximum specified for two passengers, according to NHTSA documents, making the seat noncompliant with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard requirements. VW dealerships will install fixed, unpadded trim parts to limit the width of the seating surface in the third row to two passengers. The installation should take about an hour. VW dealerships received instructions and parts on June 26, according to a document posted on NHTSA's website. The second recall covered 5,637 vans built between Sept. 18, 2024 and Feb. 11, 2025. Another 771 models in Canada were affected for the same reason. Sign up to get our afternoon video email. The video focuses on a new topic in the news each day. The stop-sale orders applied to new, unsold ID Buzz vehicles as well as preowned inventory. ID Buzz sales began in November, meaning the retro-inspired vehicle had only been on sale for a few months before sales were paused, frustrating dealers. U.S. sales of the ID Buzz totaled 1,162 in the fourth quarter and 1,901 in the first three months of 2025, the model's first full quarter on sale. VW's other electric vehicle in the U.S., the ID4 compact crossover, also faced a monthslong stop-sale from September until December over a recall for faulty door handles.
