FG's Ward appointed chair of influential EU Affairs committee
Fine Gael deputy for Dún Laoghaire Barry Ward is to become chair of the influential Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs.
Two weeks ago, the 28 Oireachtas committees were belatedly allocated to political parties and groups, after the process was stalled for over four months over disagreements triggered by the Dáil speaking row.
The Oireachtas committees, which are essential to both the formulation and the passing of legislation, are taking shape, but it could be weeks before they are fully up and running.
Sinn Féin will chair the Finance, Justice Home Affairs and Migration, Public Accounts, Defence and National Security, Disability Matters, Petitions, and Fisheries committees.
Labour will get to appoint the chairperson of the Traveller Community committee as well as the Oireachtas Committee on Media and Arts.
The Social Democrats, who became eligible for a second chairing role after declaring that its suspended deputy Eoin Hayes remained a party TD, will chair the Health and the Drug Use committees.
He was indefinitely suspended by the party in December after contradictory statements about when he had sold shares in a company that supplies artificial intelligence tools to the Israeli military.
Social Democrats Dublin Central TD Gary Gannon will chair the Oireachtas Committee on Drug Use, while his party colleague, Cork South Central TD Pádraig Rice, will chair the Oireachtas Committee on Health.
The Independent Technical Group will chair the Committee on Budgetary Oversight while the Independents and Smaller Parties group will chair the Irish Language Committee.
The remaining 15 roles will go to Government TDs.
The Regional Independent TDs are not seeking a committee chairperson position.

At least 49 people killed by Israeli strikes in Gaza as ceasefire prospects inch closer
AT LEAST 49 people have been killed by Israeli strikes in Gaza, the health ministry there has said. Strikes by Israel began last night and continued into this morning, falling on regions of northern Gaza, including at the national Palestine Stadium in Gaza City, where 12 people were killed. Six others were killed by strikes in the south after a strike hit their residential tent in Muwasi, according to hospital staff. The wave of deadly strikes come as the US and Qatar claim prospects of a ceasefire are near. Last night, US President Donald Trump said he was hopeful a truce could be agreed by as early as next week. Mediator Qatar has called on Israel and Hamas to seize the opportunity for peace in the region. 'If we don't utilise this window of opportunity and this momentum, it's an opportunity lost amongst many in the near past. We don't want to see that again,' a spokesperson for the Qatari government said today. Gaza has been under siege by Israel since an attack by Hamas in October 2023, which killed approximately 1,200 Israelis. Over 56,000 Palestinians, including civilians, have been killed in the Israeli government's counteroffensive to the attack. Roughly 50 hostages, taken by militant group Hamas during the October attack, remain in Gaza. Their families in Israel are hopeful that US involvement will secure a ceasefire , as a previous truce saw dozens held captive released before Israel began strikes on Gaza once more. The UN has condemned an aid blockade that has been placed on the region in recent months. A US-Israeli-backed aid distribution organisation has been set up in Gaza, but other NGOs refuse to cooperate with the group over impartiality concerns. Hundreds of Palestinians waiting for aid at the sites set up by the organisation have been killed by Israeli troops in recent weeks, becoming a near-daily occurrence. An Israeli newspaper this week reported that soldiers are routinely ordered to fire at civilians . Advertisement Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been riding on a wave of support for Israel's war in Iran. However, many western nations have recently condemned his government's actions in Gaza and the West Bank. A recent review of the EU's trade deal with Israel found that its actions in Palestine and its occupied territories breached human rights obligations included in the agreement . European leaders decided to delay any action to suspend the deal this week , however. Ireland has been amongst the European nations which have continually condemned Israel's actions in Gaza . Government leaders, including Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris, have recently described Israel's offensive as 'genocide'. The Irish government has recently begun the legislative steps to introduce a ban on trade of goods with illegal Israeli settlements in Gaza , citing a preliminary opinion by the International Court of Justice. The government has been criticised by opposition for excluding the trade of services in the legislation. Harris promised this week to include services in the legislation at a later date , claiming further legal advice is required first. Harris and Martin have both said that the introduction of the legislation will spark further action by other European nations. But European leaders cannot come to a unanimous agreement on taking action against Israel for its breaches of the EU trade agreement. THE mass funeral for the Iranian commanders wiped out in the war has been plagued by "Death to America" chants and the burning of Israeli flags. The caskets of top military commanders and nuclear scientists all eliminated by Israel during the gruelling 12-day war were all hauled through the capital. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps chief General Hossein Salami - known as one of Iran's most powerful military leaders - and General Amir Ali Hajizadeh were among the bodies being laid to rest. Both were directly targeted by Israel for their role in developing Tehran's ballistic missile program. The two twisted generals were taken out within hours of the conflict kicking off on June 13. Irish politicians to attend banned Budapest Pride event as Victor Orbán threatens participants with ‘legal consequences'
They will be among a record number of people expected to attend the event, despite Mr Orbán threatening there would be 'legal consequences' for organisers and attendees. Mr O'Gorman and MEPs Maria Walsh and Cynthia Ní Mhurchú will in the crowd marching through the Hungarian capital today. Former Taoiseach Leo Varadar is also set to take part in the parade. Those in attendance 'face the possibility of arrest, a fine of up to €500 and imprisonment of up to one year under Hungarian law,' said Ms Walsh, who urged any Irish citizens intending on travelling to Budapest to be on 'high alert'. The Fine Gael MEP described the decision to ban Pride marches in Hungary as a 'frightening step backwards for members of the LGBTQI+ community across Europe'. 'I am proud to be marching in Budapest Pride this weekend. In a year when Orbán has classified public displays of love within my own community as a child protection issue, we must all fight back." The Hungarian government enacted a hugely controversial so-called 'child protection' law in 2021 that prohibits the "depiction or promotion' of homosexuality to children under the age of 18. A bill was also passed by the parliament that makes it illegal to hold any public gatherings that breached that law, with further legislation effectively banning Pride events. The European Court of Human Rights has previously ruled in a case involving Russia that banning such events breaches human rights protections. Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, who will attend the march today, described the banning of Pride as a 'blatant attack on our civil liberties with the European Union'. She backed calls for the European Commission to intervene, including requesting interim measures in the ongoing infringement procedure against Hungary's 2021 anti-LGBTQ+ law. ADVERTISEMENT "The Hungarian Government's repeated violations of the rule of law and EU treaty principles is setting a dangerous precedent.' Former taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the atmosphere in Budapest has been 'tense' in the days ahead of the march. He told RTÉ's Drivetime that while he expects Hungarian authorities will not use 'batons and tear gas on tens of thousands of people' as 'the world would see that', the Green Party mayor of the city could be prosecuted and facial recognition technology will be used to identify attendees and fine them. "This is very oppressive, this is all contrary to European law, by the way, so I think there's a role for the European Union to play here in overturning some of these laws.' It comes as tens of thousands of people are expected to take part in Dublin's Pride parade today.
