IOM: Number of immigrants in Libya reached 850.000
The latest report by the International Organization for Migration's (IOM) Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) reveals the presence of 858,604 immigrants in Libya during the period from January to February 2025.
According to IOM, this figure marks a notable increase from the 824,131 immigrants recorded at the end of 2024, underscoring the continued influx of migrants and the growing challenges they face across the country.
The report identifies immigrants from 46 different nationalities, with men making up 78% of the population, while women and minors account for the remaining 22%. Four countries represent the origin of the vast majority of immigrants (83%): Sudan (31%), Niger (22%), Egypt (20%), and Chad (10%).
Sudanese immigration, in particular, has surged significantly due to the ongoing armed conflict in Sudan, which has forced thousands to seek refuge in Libya, the report notes.
Regionally, the western part of Libya hosts 52% of the immigrant population, largely due to relatively better work opportunities in the construction and manufacturing sectors. The eastern region hosts 35%, with key coastal cities such as Tripoli (15%), Misrata (10%), and Benghazi (10%) being among the most affected.
On the humanitarian front, the situation is described as critical. Over three-quarters of immigrants (76%) lack access to healthcare, mainly due to high costs and poor service quality. Migrant children also face major educational barriers, with 65% of school-age children not attending school—hindered by economic hardship, lack of documentation, poor social integration, and language barriers. Sudanese officials: Hemedti's speech to his forces took place inside Libyan territory
The Sudanese Minister of Youth and Sports and former Ambassador to Tripoli, Haj Majid Suwar, revealed that the meeting of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, with his troops did not take place inside Sudanese territory as claimed, but rather in areas under the control of Khalifa Haftar inside Libya. In a post on his Facebook page, Suwar said he had 'confirmed information from reliable Libyan sources' about the celebration in which Hemedti appeared, and that it was filmed deep within Libyan territory. Meanwhile, retired Brigadier General and security and strategic expert Amer Hassan cast doubt on the size of the military gathering, explaining to Al Jazeera Net that the RSF does not have such a large number of forces in one location, as seen in the video. He stated that if it were in any area of Darfur or Kordofan, it would have been spotted and targeted, as these are active combat zones. He suggested the footage may have been digitally manipulated. Hassan also believes Hemedti aimed to address several issues by appearing among his forces, most notably to demonstrate that he is still alive, mobile, and in command — an implicit response to speculation arising from his prolonged absence. In his speech to a large gathering of his troops, Hemedti admitted to military losses, stating, 'We lost precious land and dear souls,' but he vowed to return 'with dignity and pride.' He also noted that his forces' control of the Al-Awainat triangle — the border area between Sudan, Libya, and Egypt — could provide 'a positive contribution to Sudan's neighbors' by securing the borders, affirming that he has no problem with any neighboring country. Sudanese army accuses Haftar's forces of attacking its units at the border
The Sudanese army said that its border units located in the border triangle between Sudan, Egypt, and Libya were subjected to what it described as a 'surprise attack' by what it called the 'Dagalo terrorist militia,' supported by elements of the "Subul Al-Salam battalion (the Salafi Battalion) affiliated with Khalifa Haftar's forces in Libya." The statement considered Haftar's direct intervention in the fighting alongside Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as a 'blatant violation against Sudan, its land, and its people,' indicating that the incident is part of what it described as an 'international and regional conspiracy' targeting the country. The army added in its statement that it is confronting this escalation with the support of the Sudanese people, and that it 'will prevail no matter the extent of conspiracy and aggression,' accusing the United Arab Emirates of supporting such attacks through what it described as 'its militias in the region.' These statements come at a time when the Darfur region and border areas are witnessing escalating military tensions, amid repeated accusations by the Sudanese army of Haftar's forces being involved in supporting the Rapid Support Forces led by Hemedti.
