ITR filing 2025 last date extended
The Central Board of Direct Taxes has released a new deadline for ITR filing for non-audit cases, including salaried taxpayers. The final date to file the ITR for them has now been moved to September 15, 2025, from the earlier date July 31, 2025, according to the CBDT circular.
Filing beyond this date will lead to a penalty of ₹5,000 (if income exceeds ₹5 lakh) and ₹1,000 for lower income groups under Section 234F.
Belated or revised returns can be filed till December 31, 2025, and updated returns (ITR-U) can be filed till March 31, 2030.
However, while the date for the filing of the return has been extended, the payment of any due self-assessment taxes must be finished by July 31. If not, penal interest under Section 234A may be accrued.
The extension comes after alleged delays in the availability of updated ITR forms and e-filing facilities on the Income Tax Department's portal. Apart from this, the late reflection of TDS data in Form 26AS and AIS also led to challenges for the taxpayers, who urged for extension to ensure precise filing.
The deadline extension also leads to a positive reflection on the refund interests. Taxpayers who are due refunds may get up to 33 per cent higher interest under Section 244A. This is because the interest is accrued from April 1, despite the extension. This interest is taxable and must be reported in the ITR.
The Income Tax Department introduced a new Excel-based offline utility for filing the Income Tax Return-1 and Income Tax Return-4. Under this utility, taxpayers will be able to validate their returns by creating a JSON file and uploading it to the e-filing portal.

ITR Filing 2025: Do Students And Unemployed Need To File Income Tax Returns in 2025?
New Delhi: Income Tax Return (ITR) filing in India depends mainly on your annual income and age. For individuals under 60 years old, it is generally required to file an ITR if your income exceeds Rs 2.5 lakh under the old tax regime or Rs 3 lakh under the new tax regime. However, unemployed individuals and students are not obligated to file if their income stays below these limits. Even when not mandatory, filing an ITR is advisable for several reasons. It creates a government-backed digital record of your income, which can be useful when applying for loans, credit cards, jobs, or visas. Filing returns also allows you to claim refunds if excess tax has been deducted or paid in advance. Moreover, important financial transactions, such as deposits over Rs 50 lakh in a savings account, require ITR proof to comply with tax scrutiny. Additionally, filing returns is essential if you want to carry forward capital losses, such as short-term capital losses, which can be offset against future gains for up to eight assessment years, reducing your tax burden in subsequent years. For the assessment year 2025-26, the last date to file an ITR without penalty has been extended to September 15, 2025. If you miss this, you can still file a belated return until December 31, 2025, but a nominal penalty applies—Rs 5,000 if your income exceeds Rs 5 lakh, and Rs 1,000 if it is lower. The Income Tax Department offers various ITR forms depending on your income sources, like ITR-1 and ITR-2, and form ITR-3 for those earning from business or professions along with other income such as salary or capital gains. Filing your ITR is also beneficial for building a clean financial record, which is important for obtaining personal loans, credit cards, and traveling internationally. For students, maintaining a good tax record can ease admission processes in top global institutions, help secure education loans, and qualify for scholarships. The filing process is straightforward, requiring basic documents such as PAN, Aadhaar card, and bank statements.

Can overseas investors remit Indian taxes without an Indian bank account?
I am a Singapore citizen. I had previously invested in an unlisted Indian private company in 2021. Subsequently, I have sold my shareholding to an NRI here, after the Indian promoter chose not to exercise his right of first offer. The buyer did not deduct tax at source (TDS) on the transaction. As I do not hold an Indian bank account, I would like to understand the procedure for discharging my tax liability and remitting the applicable taxes while filing my income tax return in India. -Name withheld on request When you sell shares of an Indian company, any income arising from such a transfer is subject to capital gains tax in India. In cases where tax has not been deducted at source (TDS) by the purchaser, the onus is on you, as the taxpayer, to discharge the tax liability by paying the applicable amount as self-assessment tax, prior to filing your income tax return. Even if you do not have a bank account in India, you can still make the tax payment from abroad. Several Indian banks facilitate this process by allowing remittance of tax payments from your overseas bank account into their designated Nostro accounts. To initiate this, you are required to download and complete a mandate form available under the 'e-Pay Tax' section on the Income Tax Department's website, and submit it to the bank through which the payment is being made. Upon receipt of funds, the bank will process the tax payment and issue a Unique Transaction Reference (UTR) number. The corresponding tax challan will be reflected under the 'Payment History' tab in the 'e-Pay Tax' section of the income tax portal. Once available, you may download the challan and proceed to file your income tax return, ensuring the challan details are correctly reported in the return. Can you please confirm whether interest on fixed deposit opened in Gift City is exempt similar to FCNR deposit? I got to know that FD in Gift City starts with seven days instead of minimum one year for FCNR in India. -Name withheld on request Under Indian income tax law, interest earned on deposits maintained with an IFSC Banking Unit (IBU) is exempt from tax for non-residents. The CBDT has also clarified that IBUs are not required to deduct tax at source (TDS) on interest paid to non-residents on such deposits. Moreover, if the interest from your IBU deposit in GIFT City is your only income earned in India and you have no other income chargeable to tax in the country, you are not required to file an Indian income tax return.
