Marcus Rashford expects to take full part in Manchester United's pre-season
The England forward, 27, spent six months on loan at Aston Villa last season after getting frozen out by United head coach Ruben Amorim but has returned to his parent club.
Rashford is among the players at Old Trafford with uncertain futures, also including Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho, with the club having to decide whether they should be included in preparations for the 2025-26 campaign and the tour of the United States.
With Rashford, United will make a decision on whether to re-integrate him into their squad after his successful loan at Villa where he forced his way back into the England squad under Thomas Tuchel.
They could also look to sell Rashford or loan him out again, which would need the player to accept terms to join a new club.
Rashford has no issue returning to the club and training fully ahead of the new campaign, according to sources close to the player. This is despite Amorim dropping him from the match-day squad last season.
United travel to the US for their pre-season programme after facing Leeds United in Stockholm, Sweden, on July 19. For their American tour, they face West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton in the Premier League Summer Series. Ahead of the new season, they will also play Italian club Fiorentina on August 9.
Rashford was interviewed recently in Spain where he has worked with personal trainers, with the forward hinting that he would like to play at Barcelona with teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. Rashford has been based near Marbella, where he says the weather and proximity to England makes it a good place for work ahead of pre-season.
United value him at £40 million, although Rashford's salary means the club may have to negotiate a deal should he leave. As reported by Telegraph Sport last weekend, United face paying players portions of their existing contracts to leave.
Rashford's representatives have previously spoken to Barca, who could favour a loan move. At this stage of the window, talks have yet to start over a summer move, with Amorim yet to make his intentions clear on what his unwanted players will do in pre-season.
Has this happened before?
Romelu Lukaku went on pre-season tour to Australia in 2019 ahead of leaving for Inter Milan later in the summer. He was training on his own, although the club cited injury for the reason he was not with the first-team squad.
Jadon Sancho returned to United last season after reaching the Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund while on loan. He played in pre-season and featured in the Community Shield before being loaned to Chelsea for the season.
Where can Rashford go?
Rashford's recent interview suggests he would favour a move abroad, hinting at Barcelona being a preferred destination when asked about the prospect of being a team-mate for Lamine Yamal at the Nou Camp.
Other clubs are looking for wide forward. For instance, Tottenham Hotspur are looking at that position – but it remains to be seen who they will move for. Newcastle United were interested in Joao Pedro but he decided to move to Chelsea.
Has the door opened at Barcelona?
Barcelona have been looking at a wide forward and were interested in a deal for Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams. However, the Spain international has now signed a new 10-year deal with his club with an increased buyout clause, which would make a move this summer look unlikely.
'Nico Williams renews with Athletic Club until 2035,' read a statement from Athletic. 'The red-and-white winger commits to the club of his heart for the next 10 seasons, and his release clause increases by more than 50 per cent.'
Williams's previous release clause was previously around £50 million, with the prospect of a new club now paying £75 million. Rashford would be available for a much cheaper price, although Barca are also admirers of Liverpool's Luis Diaz.
Who else at United is in a similar position to Rashford?
Chelsea paid United a £5 million penalty after deciding not to make Sancho's loan deal permanent, so he is scheduled to join Rashford at Carrington on Monday.
Brazil forward Antony was loaned to Real Betis last season and they remain interested in having him again at the right price. Tyrell Malacia, who spent the second half of last season out on loan at PSV Eindhoven, also has an uncertain future. Alejandro Garnacho is also available for transfer.

BREAKING NEWS $90m Yankees star DJ LeMahieu left furious as he is ousted from the team after struggling with the 'physical demands' of MLB
Veteran Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu looks set to leave New York after being designated for assignment in a stunning decision by the team. LeMahieu, 36, has struggled with injuries over the past few seasons in the wake of signing a huge $90million, six-year contract in the Covid-affected 2020 season. And now it looks as though he won't play another game for the team after Aaron Boone and GM Brian Cashman ousted him from the team on Wednesday, calling up Jorbit Vivas in his place. The Yanks now have seven days to either trade him or place him on outright or unconditional release waivers, a decision that is complicated by his huge wages - he is due $15m this season. It is expected that the Yankees will lose around $22m on LeMahieu's contract after making the decision to designate him for assignment. In a bombshell tweet from Yankees reporter Brian Hoch, it was revealed that LeMahieu had told the team he was willing to begin working at third base again, but the position had become 'too physically demanding' for him. LeMahieu, the report continues, is said to be furious with the DFA decision after lengthy discussions were held between him and the team's front office on Tuesday. It would now be a surprise to see LeMahieu ever pull on the pinstripes again, and the decision comes just a day after he was transitioned to a bench role. The infielder - who is a two-time batting champion and previous fans' favorite - is hitting just .574 OPS from 142 plate appearances this season, and has seemed a shadow of his former self. Back in 2020, he became the first player in modern history to win the battling title in both the American and National Leagues, first with the Rockies in 2016 and then with the Yankees in 2020.

England suffer T20 series defeat as India ease to victory at Old Trafford
Having won the toss and chosen to bat, England laboured to 126 for seven, a score padded out by 16 runs off the final over thanks to sixes from Sophie Ecclestone and Issy Wong, on a night when none of the batters truly got going. And the difficulty of defending that total quickly became apparent as India openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma hit nine fours off the first four overs – more than England had managed in their entire innings – to lay the foundations for a convincing victory. India take the series in Manchester 😢 To Birmingham for the final T20. — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 9, 2025 The series loss will come as a significant reality check for Charlotte Edwards after her tenure began with a clean sweep of the West Indies in T20s and ODIs. England had given themselves a lifeline in the series with a five-run victory at the Oval on Friday but India reasserted control in Manchester, stifling England with disciplined bowling and some sharp fielding. Danni Wyatt-Hodge had just watched Sophia Dunkley hit a six back down the ground off Shree Charani, but when she tried the same thing herself she was caught by Arundhati Reddy for five. Dunkley followed for 22 three overs later, the victim of a sharp catch from Radha Yadav after spooning a short delivery from Deepti Sharma to leave England on 33 for two. Tammy Beaumont and Alice Capsey were slowly building a partnership but, from the second ball after the drinks break, Beaumont (20) became Reddy's next victim after failing to get enough power on Yadav's delivery. It felt a key moment in the innings as England fell to 68 for three. Capsey soon followed for 18, trapped lbw by Charani and not even sticking around to see the result of the review she asked for. Amanjot Kaur appeared to have hurt herself fielding a shot from Paige Scholfield but after receiving treatment, she bowled out Amy Jones for nine two deliveries later. Scholfield (16) and Charlie Dean (four) both went in the 17th over – the latter run out in a terrible mix up with Ecclestone. The youngest ever English woman to reach 100 T20 caps, enjoy every minute @Sophecc19 😍 Everton legend and Soph's friend, Phil Jagielka presented her with her cap 🤝 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 9, 2025 Openers Verma and Mandhana wasted little time in setting about the run chase, with 50 runs coming off the first five overs. Progress was stalled as Verma was caught by Capsey on the boundary off Dean for 31 before Ecclestone – who became the youngest woman to reach 100 T20 appearances for England – claimed the big scalp of Mandhana for 32, tempting her to slice a shot into the hands of Lauren Filer. The run rate initially slumped, with captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues at the crease, but India stayed on the right side of the numbers required and then gradually started to turn the screw. Kaur fell for 26, caught by Ecclestone off Wong, before Amanjot Kaur was run out for two, but Rodrigues (24) and Richa Ghosh (seven) brought it home for India with 18 balls to spare.

Trump keeps claiming places are selling gas for $1.99. There is no proof to back that up
President Donald Trump has been gassing up low gasoline prices, repeatedly asserting that they're as low as $1.99, but there's little proof to support his claims. 'There's two states, three states that were selling gasoline at $1.99. You haven't seen that for a long time,' the president said at a press conference on Wednesday. It's not immediately clear which states he was referring to as nowhere seemed to have such low prices. The Independent has reached out to the White House for comment. Mississippi currently boasts the lowest gas prices in the country with an average of $2.69 per gallon. In the city of Gulfport, gas goes for $2.35, according to GasBuddy, a firm that tracks gas prices across the country. Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Alabama also have an average under $2.80, as of Wednesday, GasBuddy found. Gas is going for $2.31 a gallon at one station in Fort McLellan, Alabama, GasBuddy found. The national average was $3.16 a gallon as of Wednesday afternoon, according to AAA. While those prices are low, it's still a far cry from the $1.99 that Trump has been touting. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, told CNN that the last time he's seen states with average prices below $2 per gallon was in January 2021, following the Covid-19 pandemic, when people were driving less. Trump made similar remarks last week, when he declared: 'We have no inflation.' He then claimed multiple states boasted gas prices under $2: 'The gasoline just hit $1.99 today in 5 states.' In May, the president once again claimed gas prices were under $2 in some places. 'Gasoline just broke $1.98 a Gallon, lowest in years,' he wrote on Truth Social. One day before his social media post, RBOB Gasoline futures hit $1.98 per gallon, CNBC reported, perhaps explaining why Trump has been relying on that figure. Gas prices have fallen in recent weeks. The nation's average price of gasoline has declined for the second week in a row, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 12 million individual price reports covering more than 150,000 gas stations across the country. 'Nearly every state saw average gas prices decline for the second straight week, even as the nation celebrated July 4 with the lowest national average for Independence Day since 2020,' De Haan said in a statement.
