However, a groundbreaking study has opened the doors to a new realm of communication—one that takes place underground, in the hidden world of fungi. Until now, we've marveled at robotic chefs and AI-driven food technologies. But few could have imagined that mushrooms—yes, the same kind you might toss into your salad—could potentially "talk" to one another using a language-like system.
This might sound like science fiction, but recent research conducted by Professor Andrew Adamatzky from the University of the West of England challenges our understanding of intelligence in non-human life forms.
By analyzing the electrical signals passed through fungal networks called mycelium, Adamatzky found patterns that closely resemble the structure and complexity of human language. According to the study, these signal patterns can be grouped into "words" and may serve as a form of communication between fungi.
The findings, published in Royal Society Open Science, propose that mushrooms may not only be sentient in some form but could also possess a rudimentary vocabulary of up to 50 distinct "words."
The implications of such a discovery are immense, potentially redefining how we perceive intelligence, communication, and life itself in the natural world.

To explore these signals, Professor Adamatzky and his team monitored the electrical activity of four mushroom species:
Enoki (Flammulina velutipes)
Split gill (Schizophyllum commune)
Ghost fungus (Omphalotus nidiformis)
Caterpillar fungus (Cordyceps militaris)
Using a set of microelectrodes inserted into the mycelium, researchers recorded electrical spikes over several days. They then used computational models to analyze the data, identifying spike clusters that resembled word-like structures.
Remarkably, some of these patterns shared statistical properties with human language, including average word length and recurrence of certain "core" signals.
The research revealed that:

The average word length was 5.97 characters, compared to 4.8 characters in English.

Despite the groundbreaking nature of the study, Professor Adamatzky himself remains cautious. He acknowledges that while the patterns resemble human speech statistically, there's no definitive evidence that fungi are conscious or possess language as we define it. 'I do not claim they are talking in the same way humans do,' Adamatzky stated. 'But there are lots of similarities in information processing.'
Skepticism is natural with a discovery this bold.
Some researchers argue that calling these electrical spikes "words" is misleading and anthropocentric. Fungal communication, they argue, could be a byproduct of basic biological processes, rather than deliberate messaging. Others believe the study is a significant first step, but caution that further peer-reviewed work is essential to validate these conclusions.

But not Raju Kandaswamy, a senior IT professional, who believes such errors throw a spanner in the works of Tamil's linguistic integrity. "Current training datasets are heavily distributed in English language and therefore do not accurately represent Tamil language or its cultural context. Users over a period of time absorb and internalise these biases leading to slow erosion of cultural values," he said. An increasing number of people, including senior citizens, rarely pick up books and consume Tamil content only through the internet or through speech. In a world increasingly mediated by LLMs, involved in web searches, shopping and education, this creates a problem. Kandaswamy is principal consultant at Thoughtworks in Coimbatore and part of AI Tamil Nadu, a non-profit community aiming to improve how AI models work in Tamil. The team is building a large-scale Tamil language dataset to train AI models, and is collaborating with authors and other organisations to curate large, high-quality datasets. Their plan is using these data repositories to fine-tune open-source models such as Meta's LLama and make it available for anyone to build Tamil-specific models. Abinaya Mahendiran, a natural language processing expert and member of AI Tamil Nadu, is leading the initiative named Vidhai. She too thinks it is crucial for preserving Tamil culture. "Access to high-quality datasets in less represented languages is limited, and Tamil is no exception. Machine-translated content is often inaccurate. So, we collect original Tamil texts such as books, essays and articles from various sources, clean them, and annotate them with the help of volunteers, students, linguists, retirees, and teachers. A trove of Tamil books and printed material is yet to be digitised," she said. Today, many independent researchers and language enthusiasts are spending their own money to improve Tamil AI models. But as Abinaya notes, lack of computing resources and difficulty in mobilising volunteers are major barriers. The Tamil Virtual Academy (TVA) has a digital library of more than 1 lakh books containing around 1.5 crore pages, spanning subjects from science to history. It is also developing tools like syntactic parsers, morphological analysers, and 'parts of speech' taggers, resources critical for NLP research. Yet, fragmented efforts, siloed developments, and fuzzy copyright guidelines hinder collaboration. A senior official confirmed that TVA could collaborate with AI technologists, but ambiguity around copyright and fair use remains a bottleneck. Navaneeth Malingan, founder of AI Tamil Nadu, is attempting to bridge the ecosystem, by bringing together various elements -- from scouting for students volunteers and linguists to getting access to computing resources through corporate sponsorship. He says these kinds of models are crucial for delivery of govt services for locals, while commercial AI models will be useful for most business cases. "The govt can use it to fill forms through voice, give instructions to farmers and teach Tamil to the younger generation. Various stakeholders including govt and companies should be brought together to build these models suitable for the use cases," he asserted. The community is currently fine-tuning existing AI models to improve its performance in Tamil, but is ambitious about building one from scratch - albeit a small-domain focused model. It will use a tokenisation method inspired by Nannul, the 13th century Tamil grammar treatise, to better reflect the language's morphological structure instead of the currently widely used Byte-Pair Encoding (BPE) method. Tokenisation refers to the process of breaking down text into smaller units called tokens. From adopting the printing press in the 1500s (the first in India), to adopting Unicode for the internet, Tamil has consistently been an early adopter of new communication technologies. Now, it should be able to find its place in the AI age.

Women in STEM is a popular term you would have heard, and it is well-celebrated in the modern age. However, what about the women who laid the stepping stones for the term? Women who not only broke gender barriers but also played an important role in laying the foundation in several modern fields. One such icon was Ada Lovelace. Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, more commonly known as Ada Lovelace, was the daughter of the poet Lord Byron and his wife, Anne Isabella Milbanke. She did something most women deemed impossible then. She became the world's first computer programmer. Even though recognised much later, her visionary notes on Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine included what is recognised as the first computer algorithm, earning her that title. A mother's fear Being a single mother, Lady Byron was sceptical of several skills thought to be irrational — specifically subjects like the arts — which she associated with Lord Byron. In order to prevent Ada from having any poetic tendencies, Lady Byron made sure that her daughter received a rigorous education in science and mathematics, which were very uncommon for girls in her era. Ada had a natural aptitude for numbers and reasoning from a young age. Among her tutors were renowned mathematicians like Augustus De Morgan, a well-known logician, and Mary Somerville, one of the first female members of the Royal Astronomical Society. Ada's life changed dramatically when she met Charles Babbage, the inventor and mathematician who is frequently referred to as the 'father of the computer', when she was just 17 years old. Babbage was then developing the Difference Engine, a mechanical device used to perform mathematical calculations. Ada was fascinated by his ideas and demonstrated a thorough understanding of his work. They developed a strong intellectual bond, and Babbage was impressed by her perceptions and critical abilities. He affectionately referred to her as 'The Enchantress of Numbers'. Babbage and Lovelace's friendship and collaboration would become one of the most significant intellectual partnerships of the 19th Century. Babbage later started working on the Analytical Engine, a general-purpose computing machine. It contained many features that we see and use in modern computers, including an arithmetic logic unit and integrated memory. The path changer In 1842, based on a lecture Babbage gave in Turin, Italian engineer Luigi Federico Menabrea wrote a paper in French about the Analytical Engine. Lovelace was commissioned to translate this paper into English. But she went far beyond a mere translation. Her notes were three times longer than the original text and offered profound insights into the potential of the machine. She described how the engine could be programmed to perform tasks beyond pure number-crunching—such as composing music—highlighting her prescient understanding of computing as a universal machine. Lovelace most famously included a technique for using the Analytical Engine to calculate a series of Bernoulli numbers. This is widely regarded as the first algorithm ever intended to be executed by a machine, making her the first computer programmer in history. Did you know? The U.S. Department of Defence named a programming language 'Ada' in her honour in the 1980s. But in the late 1840s, her health began to decline, and in 1852, she passed away from uterine cancer. She was buried next to her father, Lord Byron, in Nottinghamshire's Church of St Mary Magdalene, as she requested. For many years after her death, Ada Lovelace's contributions were largely forgotten. It wasn't until the mid-20th Century, with the rise of computer science as a discipline, that her work was rediscovered and properly recognised. The Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) Delhi will offer admissions to 20 postgraduate programmes through the Common University Entrance Test Postgraduate (CUET PG) scores for the academic session 2025-26. The 20 postgrauduate programmes include MBA, MCA (software engineering) or MCA, MAMC, MPT (M/N/S/C), MSc (environment management), LLM, MA (English), MEd, MTech (CSG), MTech (EG), MA (economics), PG in applied geoinformatics, MSc (yoga), MSc (medicinal chemistry and drug design), MSc (bioinformatics), MSc (molecular diagnostics), MSc (microbiology), MS (packaging technology), BEd and BEd (special education). Candidates interested in admissions to these programmes through CUET scores can apply online by July 15 with a fee of Rs 2,500 for application and counselling. Detailed information is available on the university's websites – and CUET PG scores will be used for admission to PG programmes after the merit list of national-level tests or GGSIPU Common Entrance Test (CET) and university-conducted entrance exams for affiliated programmes is exhausted. IPU, this year, has introduced an orphan children quota, in addition to the existing Single Girl Child quota introduced last year. The quota will be effective from the academic session 2025-26. Under this quota, one additional seat will be reserved in each university schools and programmes, and the selected students will be eligible for a 100 per cent fee waiver under the university's EWS scheme. The University has launched an admission chatbot service. The IP University admission chatbot service seeks to provide instant answers to queries related to admissions in various programmes for the new session.
