Zimbabwe's ex-foreign minister Walter Mzembi jailed after spending years in South Africa

A court in Zimbabwe has dismissed Zimbabwe's former foreign affairs minister Walter Mzembi's application challenging his placement on remand, extending his detention.
State-owned The Herald newspaper reported that Harare regional magistrate Donald Ndirowei has dismissed Mzembi's application challenging his placement on remand.
The matter was postponed to Friday where a date of trial is expected to be allocated.
Authorities in the post-Robert Mugabe-era have issued warrants of arrest against Mzembi since 2008, after the long-time ruler, Mugabe, was unceremoniously removed from power.
The Herald reported that the court has recently confirmation of three outstanding warrants of arrest against Mzembi, who has previously held different cabinet posts in Mugabe's regime.
Mzembi, the 61-year-old former Masvingo South Member of Parliament, was arrested on June 14 when he, in a surprise move, returned to Zimbabwe from his base in South Africa, where he had stayed for around seven years.

When he left Zimbabwe in 2018, Mzembi was on bail, and he had convinced the Harare authorities that he needed urgent cancer treatment from experts in South Africa. He never returned home to face trial on serious charges of corruption and criminal abuse of office.
In 2021, State media in Zimbabwe reported that the government of Zimbabwe was awaiting a response from their South African counterparts following a request to have Mzembi to Harare for trial on theft and fraud charges.
At the time, Mzembi was accused of criminal abuse of duty, and theft of trust funds involving US$847 000 (more than R15 million). The crimes were allegedly committed while Mzembi was minister of tourism and hospitality, and was spearheading Zimbabwe's co-hosting of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation Conference in August 2013.

When Mzembi returned to Zimbabwe in June, it was widely reported that he met his long-time comrade in Zanu PF, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, for a private meeting. However, sources in Harare told IOL that the meeting did not happen.
Mzembi, who was very active on social media platforms, had been a vociferous critic of Mnangagwa's government during his sojourn in South Africa.
The government of Zimbabwe, under Mnangagwa, also sought to extradite former minister Jonathan Moyo, who fled to Kenya after the fall of Mugabe's reign. Moyo is accused of diverting US$244,575 (more than R4 million) from the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund.

Wynberg teacher challenges dismissal following daughter's mental health crisis
Mother claims school's handling of gossip leads to serious mental health crisis for her daughter. Image: Independent Newspapers Archives A former Wynberg Girls' Junior School teacher is challenging her dismissal, claiming it followed a private conversation that drew the principal's attention and led to her 13-year-old daughter attempting to take her own life. Charged with misconduct for breach of confidentiality, the woman is awaiting a date for arbitration for unfair dismissal and an Equality Court inquiry. The mother, who cannot be identified, was a teacher at the school where her two children were learners. The children have since been transferred to another school. The mother said their lives were turned upside down in March when her daughter was questioned by school authorities about gossip she shared with a friend about teaching staff. She said her daughter overheard the conversation between herself and a former colleague and then apparently shared it with a friend via WhatsApp, who then shared it with teaching staff. Next Stay Close ✕ The mother told the Cape Argus she was irate that her daughter had been questioned without her knowledge, and she agreed her child should face disciplinary action. But she could never have prepared herself for what happened next, when her daughter attempted to take her life. "I sat her down and told her how she had gotten us into this situation and I told her she must go to her room and we will speak after supper," she said. 'I just heard a gagging sound and when I opened the door, I saw the empty tablet containers.' The mother then rushed her child to hospital where she received medical attention and psychological support. She said was disturbed when her daughter's identity was shared with teaching staff via a letter. 'Sharing my daughter's name with staff in a letter, violated my daughter's dignity and her rights,' she said. 'My daughter was home for two weeks and diagnosed with PTSD and was without access to promised psychological support.' She said various emails were exchanged between herself and the principal, in which she expressed her dissatisfaction over how the matter was handled. She said she then received a letter from the principal terminating her employment as a Student Governing Body (SGB) filled post. According to court papers shared with the Cape Argus, the respondents for the Equality Court matter are the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and the principal, with the inquiry date set down for August 8 at the Mitchell's Plain Magistrate's Court. The mother also reported the matter to the circuit office and the National Professional Teacher's Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa). Naptosa provincial chief executive officer, Riedwaan Ahmed, said arbitration is expected in the matter as the necessary steps for dismissal may not have been followed. 'Our considered view and position is that our member was dismissed without a disciplinary hearing or the opportunity to test the evidence through cross examination of relevant witnesses." Millicent Merton, spokesperson for the WCED, said: 'The school reported that the SGB took disciplinary action against the parent, who was an SGB employee, for misconduct. The learner was questioned about a transgression that ultimately revealed the parent's misconduct. In addressing the learner's transgression, the school took a restorative approach and provided support to the learner through a school counsellor." Attempts to obtain comment from the SGB were fruitless as emails cited that the chairperson was currently on leave. The Cape Argus also awaits feedback from the CCMA. ANC doesn't give a damn about the ordinary man and is foisting National Dialogue on us to divert attention
National dialogue is disingenuous I endorse the views of all those who have criticised the National Dialogue in various media outlets. The problems South Africans face were created by corrupt, inept politicians who take home fat salaries every month. Now they want a costly diversionary side-show, ostensibly to solve the problems they created, but really intended to keep the naïve and gullible occupied instead of paying attention to the new revelations every they can't solve the problems how can the politically aligned people they have selectively co-opted manage to do it? How qualified or competent are they? Some might be. But certainly not all of them. Also President Ramaphosa used the word inclusive (or synonyms) repeatedly. Yet there are communities or faith groups not included in the co-opted men of example, I did not see a representative of the descendants of Indentured Indians. I stand to be corrected, but no Hindus were chosen, not that it matters if competent qualified people, regardless of race or faith, were chosen with the assurance they could solve the problems. Yes, I am aware Ela Gandhi is there, but she is not a Girmitya, nor a Hindu. Even if she were I would have a problem with her because when she was in parliament, what did she accomplish in a parliament with very skewed representation when it came to a heterogeneous 'Indian community'? This is especially so when it comes to the poor and disempowered in Chatsworth, Phoenix etc. Furthermore, she is a very inconsistent person or a hypocrite. According to a Post article (January 8-10, 2003): 'Ms Ela Gandhi has refused to participate in the PBD (Indian Diaspora get-together) saying it was racist. 'I feel anything based on race I would not like to identify with.' Yet in an inexplicable about-turn, she accepted the Padma Bhushan award from India in 2007, and the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman – the highest honour conferred on overseas Indians by India's Ministry of External Fatima Meer went one better: She reviled the notion of an 'Indian Diaspora' in 2003, yet received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award at the same event in 2003. We don't need any flip-floppers representing us. | Kamini Prakash Umhlanga Trump governs by Art Of The Deal On a daily basis, the mainstream media disparage US President Donald Trump for his style of government, even claiming his actions are wittingly reckless. But if journalists and readers were familiar with Trump's book, Art of the Deal, they would understand. The premise of Trump's strategy is leverage. It's his key tool for achieving what he intends. To realise that, he has a range of tactics which he applies to suit the circumstances. Here they are:Walking away from the table; creating a sense of urgency; using his resources to manipulate; strategic timing; appearing unpredictable; doing nothing; delaying; creating uncertainty; keeping the opponent guessing; keeping options open; pivoting on positions; projecting confidence even when his position is insecure; pushing opponents into reactive mode; using information to manoeuvre opponents into positions that suit him or trap them. Government for Trump means practicing the art of the deal. In so doing he is more than the conductor. He is also the orchestra playing the instruments which is why the discordance he produces on occasions is intentional and why many think he is clueless about what he is doing. Wrong! We are witnessing an exceptional leader and a master tactician with virtuous intentions in vanquishing Orwellian globalism, salvaging America's sovereignty and its constitutional premise based on, 'We the people'. | DR DUNCAN DU BOIS Bluff ANC has no intention of saving South Africa All you have to do is to consider the record of the ANC and Cyril Ramaphosa regarding the success when it comes to commissions of inquiry. Yet, the general public and private sector is completely in the dark, and we have a resident who refuses to answer questions or be scrutinised. Not only was Ramaphosa implicated in two other major scandals, Marikana and Phala Phala, but he was second in charge under Jacob Zuma when State Capture version 1 took place. Now we have State Capture a'la Cupcake and a corrupt police force. The ANC president has seemingly built around him an impenetrable, bullet proof layer of protection, which consists of the police, the judiciary, his own cadres (at least some of them), the media and even political parties too damn scared to ruffle any feathers. The result is that the South Africa today is a broken, tired and failed state, captured by the 'untouchable' elites who pretended for 30 years to care about their own people, yet lied to them, abused them and used their votes to get into positions of immense power! | L Oosthuizen Durban DAILY NEWS

‘I don't know him, let him rot in jail,' Malema breaks silence on Vusimuzi ‘Cat' Matlala scandal
EFF leader Julius Malema has denied any association with controversial business tycoon Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, who is accused of corruption and attempted murder. Image: X/EFF Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has distanced himself from controversial businessman Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, following social media speculation linking him and his wife to the embattled tycoon. 'He must go - rot in jail. I don't know him. I don't even care about him,' Malema told journalists on Wednesday outside Mponegele Primary School voting station in Limpopo, where by-elections were held in Ward 13. 'I've never had anything to do with him. So you take a petty gossip and come ask me about it? There are serious national issues you should ask me about. I've got nothing to do with what is happening.' Malema also expressed frustration over the scrutiny, 'When I speak, you all complain. When I keep quiet, you all complain. I don't know what you want now ...le a nnyaka, man (you really want me to talk).' Malema's comments followed speculation on social media suggesting his wife, Mantwa Matlala, is related to Matlala or uses VIP protection services offered by his company, CAT VIP Protection. Images making rounds on social media, purportedly show a woman believed to be Mantwa being protected by agents from CAT VIP Protection. Some users have alleged that this connection is the reason for Malema's silence on Matlala. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Others, however, said there were no links between Mantwa and the businessman. 'Cat' Matlala made headlines recently after KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused him of interfering in police operations and shielding criminal networks. During a press briefing last week, Mkhwanazi presented WhatsApp messages, SAPS documents, and cellphone records that allegedly show efforts to dismantle a KZN task team. Mkhwanazi linked Matlala to Brown Mogotsi, a 'comrade' of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, and revealed Matlala had received a R360 million SAPS health services contract that has since been canceled. According to Mkhwanazi, the disbandment of the task team was 'a calculated move to shield a criminal syndicate embedded in law enforcement and politics.' In response, President Cyril Ramaphosa placed Mchunu on special leave and established a Judicial Commission of Inquiry. On Tuesday, he appointed Gwede Mantashe as acting police minister, while Mantashe continues in his current role in Mineral and Petroleum Resources. Professor Firoz Cachalia is expected to assume the role permanently in August after retiring from Wits University. IOL News previously reported that Matlala is facing additional charges related to a 2023 shooting incident involving South African socialite Tebogo Thobejane, known for her role on Muvhango. Thobejane was shot in the foot on the N1 near Sandton, while a female passenger suffered a serious spinal injury. Last week on Friday, Matlala and his three co-accused appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court. The state announced plans to consolidate two other cases - one in Pretoria West and another in Lyttelton - into the current matter. Proceedings were postponed to August 26. Matlala appeared in shackles and was transported under heavy guard to the C-Max unit at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre. He faces charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, fraud, and money laundering. His co-accused include his wife, Tsakani Matlala (accused number four), Musa Kekana (accused number one), and Tiegi Floyd Mabusela, also known as Danny (accused number two). Tsakani Matlala was added to the charge sheet in May and granted R20,000 bail due to health concerns and her role as a mother of young children. Bail conditions include surrendering her passport, remaining in Gauteng, and avoiding contact with witnesses or relatives of the other accused. Matlala was arrested on May 14 in Midrand following what police called a 'high-profile investigation.' He is accused of orchestrating a hit on Thobejane and laundering millions, including funds tied to the canceled SAPS contract. IOL Politics
