Timor-Leste confident of gaining full ASEAN membership by October
TIMOR-LESTE is optimistic about becoming a full member of ASEAN by October this year, according to Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao (picture).
Its Minister of Foreign Affairs Bendito Dos Santos Freitas also expressed confidence that the country will meet all requirements during Malaysia's chairmanship of ASEAN this year.'Yes, I do believe. We are doing our best to meet the necessary requirements,' he told the media at the 46th ASEAN Summit today.
He said the country is working hard to fulfil all the criteria laid out by the regional bloc.
'What the ASEAN foreign ministers have conveyed is that as long as we fulfil part of the criteria, we can become an ASEAN member. We are completing the remaining criteria step by step,' he said.
First applying to join ASEAN back in 2011, the bloc granted it observer status and accepted its membership in principle during the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits in Phnom Penh in November 2022.
During a press conference yesterday, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Malaysia supports Timor-Leste's admission into ASEAN and has proposed a phased timeline to allow the country
to meet all entry conditions.
'We are doing our best to facilitate Timor-Leste's membership in ASEAN because the majority of member countries want it to be part of the bloc's big family,' he said.
Mohamad added that a Timor-Leste Unit has been established to assist the country in fulfilling its roadmap, which supports its integration into the bloc.
'The ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting will continue discussions on the guidelines under the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting,' he said.
As part of ongoing efforts, the establishment of a dedicated task force on Timor-Leste has also been proposed.

The issue of digital transformation continued with a question from V. Sivakumar (PH-Batu Gajah) to the Digital Minister who wanted to know the country's preparedness for the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution including technology transfer strategies, local talent development, as well as the level of AI integration in governance and key economic sectors. Datuk Dr Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PN-Pengkalan Chepa) also asked the Prime Minister regarding the justification for the increase in the 2025 haj cost, the status of Tabung Haji investments and the amount of unused Malaysian haj quota for the years 2020 to 2025. After the question and answer session, the sitting will continue with the tabling of the second reading of several bills including the Consumer Credit Act 2025 and the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing (Amendment) Bill 2025. Members of Parliament are also expected to focus on the motion to debate the Annual Report and Financial Statements of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) 2023 (Statute Paper 80 of 2025). Parliamentarians are key to peace and stability in this region, says Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly
PHNOM PENH (Bernama): Parliamentarians across South-East Asia must take on a more active role in promoting diplomacy and stability amid rising geopolitical tensions. This was the key message from top speakers at the 16th Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Caucus held in Phnom Penh, who stressed that the role of lawmakers is more crucial than ever. Asean Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn also called on parliamentarians to champion peace and regional stability. He said that in the interconnected yet fragmented world, sustainable peace is not merely the absence of war or conflict, but the presence of justice, understanding, and inclusivity. "In an era marked by geopolitical tensions and proliferation of divisive narratives, the role of parliamentarians as bridge builders and peace makers has become more crucial today than before,' Kao said in his keynote remarks. The heads of AIPA from Asean member states and Timor-Leste are participating in the two-day event, which is being held at the National Assembly hall in the capital. "This caucus serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating true structure of dialogue, mutual respect, and sheer commitment to peaceful resolution. We can address the most complex challenges facing the region or the world,' said Kao. The theme of the meeting is 'Peace Through Dialogue: The Parliamentary Path Forward' - emphasising the role of parliamentary diplomacy in achieving peace and prosperity. Speaking at the event, Cambodia's National Assembly President Khuon Sudary said Cambodia remains fully committed to supporting Asean unity and centrality. "The roles of parliamentary diplomacy are increasingly critical in promoting regional and global peace efforts. By promoting dialogue, confidence-building measures, preventive diplomacy, and the peaceful settlement of disputes, we can contribute more to world peace. "AIPA, together with observer parliaments, needs to be more proactive and bolder in promoting parliamentary diplomacy and cooperation to shore up regional and global governance while promoting a rules-based international order,' said Sudary. - Bernama
