Wizards looking to trade former Boston Celtics guard (report)

Marcus Smart was expected to be a veteran leader on an up-and-coming Grizzlies squad, but his stint didn't end up working out in Memphis. So, at February's trade deadline, he was shipped to the rebuilding Wizards to finish out the season in what was effectively a salary dump.
Smart could be on the move again this summer. Per NBA insider Matt Moore, the Wizards are looking to trade Smart to a contender, though there's been little interest thus far. That doesn't mean Washington can't eventually find a suitor as teams look for players after the draft and free agency.

Smart, 31, is in the final year of his contract, making $21.6 million for the 2025-26 season. He averaged 9.0 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists this past season in 34 games (seven starts) between the Grizzlies and Wizards. Staying healthy has been the issue for Smart in recent seasons.
But if a contender is looking for guard depth, Smart could be a formidable option. He doesn't stuff the stat sheet, but as Celtics fans know, he can elevate his game in the playoffs. Smart does have some unpredictability to his game, but when it comes to being an emotional leader, Boston fans embraced him during his time with the Celtics.
Smart spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Celtics after being drafted sixth overall in 2014, making the playoffs every single year. There were impressive highs, including the 2022 NBA Finals run. But after the Celtics fell short to the Heat in the 2023 East Finals, the front office elected to go a different direction.
Smart was included in the Kristaps Porzingis three-team trade with the Grizzlies and Wizards that also netted the Celtics draft assets. While the Grizzlies looked like a potential contender, they've taken step backs in recent seasons. Smart only played in 39 total games in Memphis in 1.5 seasons as he couldn't stay healthy.

It's been a minute since Smart has shown what he's able to do on an NBA court. There were some light flashes in Washington, but for a young, rebuilding team, the spotlight isn't as bright like during the Celtics' deep playoff runs. So the Wizards will look to potentially move Smart as the veteran guard will hope to build up his career again.

Boston Celtics reportedly \

The Boston Celtics got their offseason off to a fast start when they traded Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft. By making those trades, Brad Stevens took the Celtics under the second luxury tax apron, giving the franchise additional flexibility as they head toward free agency and beyond. Following those two trades, rumors have swirled regarding potential deals for Derrick White and/or Jaylen Brown. Outside of Jayson Tatum, White and Brown are the crown jewels of Boston's roster. Therefore, both of them would come at a considerable cost. During a recent episode of "The Zach Lowe Show" podcast, the long-time analyst reported that Boston "laughed" at an offer the Toronto Raptors made for White ahead of draft night. "There were reports that the Raptors offered No. 9 for Derrick White," Lowe said. "I'm told that's true, but it happened like a month-and-a-half ago, right after Jayson Tatum got hurt, and Boston laughed at that offer and said, 'We need way more than No. 9 for Derrick White.'" In a June 28 edition of Jake Fischer's column in the "Stein Line" newsletter, he noted how Boston are likely looking for a similar package to what the New York Knicks paid to acquire Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets last summer. 'Boston told at least one rival team that it would have insisted on a 'Mikal Bridges-type' package to part with Derrick White, league sources say,' Fischer wrote on 'The Stein Line' Substack newsletter on June 28. 'The Celtics have certainly received no shortage of inbound trade calls on both White and Jaylen Brown in recent days, but nothing got serious on either front.' White is one of the best two-way guards in the NBA. After losing Holiday, it's unlikely Stevens signs off on a trade that sees White leave the franchise. Still, as Lowe reported, Boston's high asking price hasn't stopped teams from picking up the phone to test the waters. Watch the "Taylor Talks Celtics" podcast on: YouTube: Website:

New team floated as potential suitor for Boston Celtics' Jaylen Brown

Jaylen Brown and Derrick White have found themselves being floated in trade rumors to begin the NBA offseason. The Boston Celtics duo are two of the best players on the roster. However, with Brad Stevens already trading away Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, it would appear everyone outside of Jayson Tatum is available for the right price. During a recent episode of "The Zach Lowe Show," the long-time NBA analyst floated the Sacramento Kings as a potential suitor for Brown. Lowe did, however, note how he doesn't expect the All-Star forward to be traded this summer. 'I get the sense there was real smoke, there was something going on,' Lowe said. 'That something maybe has subsided. I said last week that I would bet on (White and Brown) being on the Celtics next year but I'm not slamming the door shut on some team — the Kings come to mind — being like, we'll offer you everything, all the swaps, all the picks, whatever you want for Jaylen Brown and at least making the Celtics think about it. I don't think that's going to happen. I think they will both be on the team next year but they instantly could become the main characters of free agency.' The Kings have plenty of assets to piece together an enticing trade offer. The problem is, none of the incoming players are at the level of Brown. Therefore, Boston would be taking a step backward in terms of talent. Stevens is clearly in the early stages of retooling the roster, with an eye on contending in the 2026-27 season once Jayson Tatum returns from an Achilles tendon tear. As such, it's unlikely we see Brown or White moving to a new team this summer, unless, of course, a team produces a trade package similar or better than the one that sent Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks last summer. Former Longhorn Tre Johnson reveals NBA jersey number

Former Longhorn basketball star Tre Johnson has checked another milestone off his bucket list. The Wizards newest star has picked his NBA jersey number. After wearing No. 21 as a Longhorn, Johnson has selected No. 12 to start his NBA career. During his time as a Longhorn, Johnson wore No.20 as a way to honor his father. That is the number he wore during his playing days. The number brought him a lot of luck as he quickly became one of the best players in the country. In his only collegiate season, Johnson averaged 19.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. As Johnson begins the next chapter of his college career, his number isn't the only change coming. The Texas native will also include "III" on the back of his jersey to acknowledge his full name: Richard Earl Johnson III. That is his new way to honor his father's legacy. When asked why No.12 is the number he is going with, Johnson gave a simple answer. He said, " I kinda just stared at the list and [saw] which one grew on me." Johnson is joining a Wizards team that is building a promising young core. Their roster features seven first-round picks who are 21 years old or younger. That includes Bub Carrington, Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, Kyshawn George, and AJ Johnson. If they can meet expectations, the Wizards future will be bright. The roster also includes veterans CJ McCollum, Khris Middleton, and Marcus Smart. They will be good voices for Johnson to rely on as he makes the transition to the NBA. With his jersey number figured out, the former Longhorn guard can focus on helping end the Wizards title drought. Fans won't have to wait long to see Johnson in action. The Wizard opens up their Summer League campaign in Las Vegas on July 11 against the Phoenix Suns. They are also scheduled to face the Brooklyn Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Utah Jazz.
