India's crude oil import from US has increased dramatically
This shift reflects a substantial change in India's energy procurement strategy. As India continues to enhance its energy cooperation with the US, the recent data showed the energy sector emerging as a vital component of this evolving partnership, potentially paving the way for a more secure and diversified energy future for India.
From January to June 25, 2025, India's imports of US crude averaged 0.271 million barrels per day (mb/d), a remarkable 51 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024 when imports stood at 0.18 mb/d.
Notably, the growth has been even more pronounced in the last quarter, with the April to June period showing a staggering 114 per cent rise over the same months in 2024.
The financial implications of this surge are equally striking; the value of these imports has soared from $1.73 billion in the first quarter of 2024-25 to $3.7 billion in the corresponding period for 2025-26.
The upward trend appears to be ongoing. In July 2025, India imported 23 per cent more crude oil from the US compared to June 2025. While the US share of India's overall crude imports was only 3 per cent last year, it climbed to 8 per cent in July of this year.
Predictions suggest that Indian companies are set to increase crude oil imports from the US by an impressive 150 per cent in the current financial year.
This increase is not limited to crude oil. India is also importing more liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US. For instance, LNG imports reached $2.46 billion in the 2024-25 financial year, nearly doubling from $1.41 billion the previous year.
Discussions for a long-term LNG contract worth tens of billions of dollars are reportedly underway, indicating that this trend of increased energy trade is just beginning.
The growing energy trade coincides with a renewed optimism in the bilateral relationship between India and the US. India's foreign ministry has expressed confidence that ties between the two nations will continue to strengthen, despite global uncertainties.
Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the enduring nature of the partnership, which is built on shared interests and democratic values.>

Agencies New Delhi: The US effective tariff rate on Indian goods rose to 20.7% in 2025, up from 2.4% in 2024, due to the addition of an 18.3 percentage point increase this year, according to Fitch Ratings. The increase in tariffs poses some downside risk to India's economic growth. Overall, the US effective tariff rate is now 17%, around 8 percentage points lower than April 3 estimate, when higher reciprocal tariffs were originally announced, it said on Monday. "The US tariff rate of 17% reflects a 15% tariff rate on EU goods, including auto and auto parts, and higher tariffs for major trading partners Brazil, Taiwan, India and Switzerland," it added. Last week, US President Donald Trump announced 25% tariff on Indian goods, along with an unspecified additional penalty related to India's energy dealings with Russia. Goldman Sachs on Monday cut India's economic growth forecast to 6.5% for 2025 and 6.4% for 2026, due to US tariffs. "In our view, some of these tariffs are likely to be negotiated lower over time, and further downside risk to the growth trajectory mainly emanates from the uncertainty, " it to HDFC Bank, the tariff poses a downside risk of 20-25 bps to India's GDP growth. Christian de Guzman, senior vice president, Moody's Ratings, said, "Curtailed access to the largest economy globally diminishes prospects for India's ambitions to develop its manufacturing sector, particularly in higher value-added sectors such as electronics".He, however, added, "India's economy is expected to remain resilient as it is less trade-reliant than other large economies in the Asia-Pacific."

Trump 2.0's China playbook ruffles partners. Outreach to Pakistan, cold-shoulder to Taiwan during China talks raise concerns

Hosting Pakistan's army chief, cancelling a Taiwan dialogue, and lifting Nvidia's AI chip ban are seen as major shifts. Is there a shift in Trump's China policy? While it's too early to make that call, there are worrying indications that point to a more accommodating Trump trade posture on China even if it means reversing his own security decisions. For India, the Quad and most of the Indo-Pacific, that's worrying as it's accompanied by no exception for allies or partners on the tariff begin with, he is cold-shouldering Taiwan while warming up to China's all-weather friend Pakistan. Given China's dominance in trade and supply chains, the plan was always to adopt a coordinated strategy with allies and partners to develop alternatives. Because for now, China literally holds the the Trump Administration has ended up in a bargaining match with Beijing, which might get some purchase in the short term, but has put its main partners in building and executing the long-term counter China strategy in question - namely Taiwan and the Quad.
