Shark attacks 2 American tourists in Bahamas
The shark attack happened around 6:30 p.m. local time Friday as the two women were swimming in Bimini Bay, located about 50 nautical miles from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said in a statement that the women received treatment at a local clinic before being airlifted to New Providence for further medical attention.
The incident is under investigation.
Earlier this month, a teenage girl was killed in a shark attack in Australia's Queensland. Charlize Zmuda, 17, suffered a "serious shark bite," on Feb. 3 and was pronounced dead at the scene about 15 minutes later.
Though shark attacks loom large among the public's imagination, they are extremely rare.
According to research by the Florida Museum of Natural History's International Shark Attack File, there were 69 unprovoked shark bites in 2023. Of those bites, 36 occurred in the United States, resulting in two deaths, and 15 occurred in Australia, resulting in four deaths.

UPI File Photo | License Photo July 21 (UPI) -- The Trump administration on Monday released 230,000 files on the 1968 assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced the files' release and provided a link to the thousands of FBI records. "Today, after nearly 60 years of questions surrounding the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we are releasing 230,000 MLK assassination files, available now at Gabbard wrote Monday in a post on X. "The documents include details about the FBI's investigation into the assassination of MLK, discussion of potential leads, internal FBI memos detailing the progress of the case, information about James Earl Ray's former cellmate who stated he discussed with Ray an alleged assassination plot, and more," Gabbard added. The release comes after Trump signed an executive order in January that also declassified records on the assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. The documents, which were stored in federal facilities for decades and released Monday -- in partnership with the Justice Department, Central Intelligence Agency, National Archives and Federal Bureau of Investigation -- have been digitized and are available for all to see. "I am grateful to President Trump and DNI Gabbard for delivering on their pledge of transparency in the release of these documents on the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.," said his niece, Dr. Alveda King. "My uncle lived boldly in pursuit of truth and justice, and his enduring legacy of faith continues to inspire Americans to this day," she added. "While we continue to mourn his death, the declassification and release of these documents are a historic step towards the truth that the American people deserve." Besides advocating for civil rights, Martin Luther King Jr., was a Baptist minister. He was shot and killed on April 4, 1968, at Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn., at the age of 39. Convicted robber and prison escapee James Earl Ray was identified as King's killer after his fingerprint was found on a rifle near the murder scene. The documents also reveal Ray's conversation with a former cellmate about the alleged assassination plot. Ray pleaded guilty to King's murder to avoid the death penalty. He was sentenced to 99 years in prison and died in custody in 1998. "Under President Trump's leadership, we are ensuring that no stone is left unturned in our mission to deliver complete transparency on this pivotal and tragic event in our nation's history," Gabbard said. "I extend my deepest appreciation to the King family for their support."

At least 20 dead after Bangladeshi military jet crashes into school
July 21 (UPI) -- At least 20 people were killed Monday after a Bangladesh Air Force aircraft crashed onto a school campus in the capital city of Dhaka. The total of victims was announced by the Bangladesh Inter-Services Public Relations, or ISPR, which also reported that the sum total of people injured in the crash has reached 171, with victims brought to eight different hospitals. Chief Adviser of the Bangladesh Government Muhammad Yunusreleased a statement that explained the training plane crashed into the Milestone School and College campus in the city's Diayabari area, "resulting in casualties." Students in the school range from elementary to high school grades. Some of the bodies of the dead must be identified through DNA testing, which will then be transferred to their families. The Bangladeshi military said in a statement that a mechanical error led to the crash that also killed the pilot, identified as Flight Lieutenant Md. Taukir Islam, who reportedly had attempted to steer the F-7 jet to a less populated area after the mechanical issue occurred. The plane crashed into the second floor of a building where third and fourth graders were located. Yunus said the incident will be investigated. "The loss suffered by the Air Force, the students, parents, teachers, and staff of Milestone School and College, as well as others affected by this accident, is irreparable," Yunus continued. "This is a moment of profound pain for the nation." Yunis also announced that the Bangladeshi interim government will observe a one-day state of mourning to mark the crash. Trump Administration Releases FBI Records on MLK Jr.
The Trump Administration on Monday released a trove of FBI documents related to the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., ending a court-ordered seal that had kept the documents out of public view since they were collected by the FBI in 1977. The release includes more than 230,000 pages of records detailing the FBI's investigation into King's assassination, including internal bureau memos, foreign intelligence cables, and previously unpublished material related to James Earl Ray, the man who pleaded guilty to King's assassination before recanting. It was not immediately clear if the documents would reveal any new information about King's murder or his life. King's family released a statement on Monday urging the public to view the files 'within their full historical context,' noting the personal nature of the matter. They also reiterated their belief that Ray was not solely responsible for King's death. 'As the children of Dr. King and Mrs. Coretta Scott King, his tragic death has been an intensely personal grief—a devastating loss for his wife, children, and the granddaughter he never met -- an absence our family has endured for over 57 years,' they wrote in a statement reviewed by The Associated Press. 'We ask those who engage with the release of these files to do so with empathy, restraint, and respect for our family's continuing grief.' In a statement, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard described the release as a 'historic step' that fulfills President Donald Trump's Executive Order issued in January that directed agencies to declassify and publish assassination records related to King, President John F. Kennedy, and Senator Robert F. Kennedy. 'The American people have waited nearly sixty years to see the full scope of the federal government's investigation into Dr. King's assassination,' Gabbard said. I extend my deepest appreciation to the King family for their support.' The files were originally not scheduled for public release until 2027, 50 years after they were put under court-ordered seal. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, while visiting Memphis. In the lead-up to his death, he had increasingly turned his focus toward economic justice and opposition to the Vietnam War, drawing heightened scrutiny from political leaders and law enforcement. Then-FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover authorized an aggressive campaign of wiretaps, hotel room bugs, and disinformation intended to discredit King and undermine the civil rights movement. Though Ray pleaded guilty to the assassination, he later tried to withdraw the plea and insisted he was not involved. Members of King's family have long expressed doubts about Ray's role, with Coretta Scott King and others publicly calling for a broader investigation into possible government involvement. A Justice Department inquiry concluded in 2000 that there was no evidence to support those assertions. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which King co-founded in 1957, opposed the release, arguing that the FBI illegally surveilled King and other civil rights figures. The timing of the MLK files' release has raised questions, as the Trump Administration is currently facing pressure over its refusal to release additional files related to the federal investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender who died in custody in 2019. Trump last week ordered the release of limited grand jury testimony but declined to unseal the full case file, prompting frustration among his supporters.
