West Africa can't be ignored for investors looking to play the gold boom

News.com.au16-07-2025
West Africa has been the best place to explore for gold in the past 15 years
And if you can handle the risk, the rewards remain rich according to SCP Resource Finance
Many Peaks among the smallest stocks to catch SCP's eye
Despite a higher sovereign risk profile, the West African gold space punches well above its weight in terms of discovery and corporate activity.
ASX 200 producers Perseus Mining (ASX:PRU) and West African Resources (ASX:WAF) have established themselves among the lowest cost and most consistent gold miners on the ASX, paving the way for others to follow.
A new report from SCP Resource Finance analyst Justin Chan described West Africa as the most dynamic region over the past 15 years for gold discoveries, new mine builds, M&A and the emergence of new mid-tier miners.
'What makes West Africa special is the combination of geology, year-round exploration/construction, fast permitting, and 'low-hanging fruit' that enables companies to find and build a mine within one gold price cycle, enabling investors to avoid the 'washing machine cycle' of projects stalling in bad markets or waiting for permits,' he said.
'Moreover, while Africa has its challenges, the silver lining is we think the executives and operators in Africa are serious and driven to achieve a discovery, build a mine, or transact quickly; Africa is no place for 'lifestyle' companies.'
Punching above its discovery weight
Unlike more mature jurisdictions, Chan pointed out that it was still possible for explorers to find open-pittable deposits with attractive grades, metallurgy and low capital intensity in West Africa.
'The numbers speak for themselves: more than 70 million ounces have been discovered in West Africa from 2010-2024 versus 37Moz in Canada, 30Moz in Australia and 30Moz in the USA over the same period per S&P Market Intelligence,' he said.
That's despite West Africa attracting a third of the spend of those other jurisdictions.
Major discoveries in recent years include Predictive Discovery's (ASX:PDI) 5.5Moz Bankan in Guinea and Montage Gold's 6Moz Koné project in Côte d'Ivoire, the latter of which is in construction.
Last year, Turaco Gold (ASX:TCG) reported an initial resource of 2.5Moz for its Afema project in Côte d'Ivoire just five months after completing the acquisition. The resource has since increased to 3.6Moz.
Rapid builds
SCP said despite the high rate of discoveries, mine builds had outpaced them over the past 10 years.
New builds in the past five years have included West African's Sanbrado in Burkina Faso, Perseus' Yaoure in Côte d'Ivoire, Orezone's Bomboré in Burkina Faso, Tietto Minerals' Abujar in Côte d'Ivoire, Fortuna Mining Corp's Séguéla in Côte d'Ivoire, and Endeavour Mining's Lafigué in Côte d'Ivoire and Sabodala-Massawa in Senegal.
Just over two weeks ago, West African confirmed it had poured first gold at its Kiaka mine in Burkina Faso, ahead of schedule and under budget and just 3.5 years after acquiring the project from B2Gold.
SCP said the builds had cleared 'two generations' of projects from the development pipeline.
'We think projects that can start building in the 2026-2028 window are in the sweet spot: we think nearly all the Africa focused producers will be or are actively looking for projects within this window, and nearly all of them have built mines recently, thus are not afraid of a buy and build,' Chan said.
Deals flowing
M&A has also progressed at a frenetic rate.
In the past five years, Perseus Mining acquired Orca Gold and Orecorp, Cardinal Resources was swallowed by Shandong Gold, Azumah Minerals was consumed by Ibaera Capital, Oklo Resources was picked up by B2Gold, Chesser Resources annexed by Fortuna and Tietto mopper up by Zhaojin Capital.
And that's just on the ASX. In Toronto, SEMAFO merged with Endeavour, Fortuna collected Roxgold, Chifeng Jilong took over Golden Star Resources and AngloGold Ashanti made away with Centamin.
SCP expects Perseus to be an active acquirer with its 17.8% stake in Predictive Discovery in focus.
Chan also sees West African as a natural acquirer that would benefit from jurisdictional diversification now that its second mine build is done.
SCP's other top candidates to be potential predators were Allied Gold Corporation, Robex Resources Inc (ASX:RXR) and Montage, but considered Resolute Mining (ASX:RSG), Orezone, Galiano Gold, Fortuna and the Chinese miners as other potentially active players.
Montage, backed by Lundin and Zijin, has recently been busy building stakes in Côte d'Ivoire explorers Aurum Resources (ASX:AUE), African Gold (ASX:A1G) and Sanu Gold.
Robex recently listed on the ASX and Orezone last week lodged a prospectus for a $75 million ASX listing, which would loosen its paper to pick up Aussie companies.
The next generation
'We think the window is wide open for West African gold explorers, with the gold price consolidating above US$3000/oz, risk capital available for high quality management teams, and a competitive M&A environment for build-ready projects,' Chan said.
In the report, Chan initiated coverage on Turaco, with a buy rating and $1.20 price target, and already covers Canada's Newcore Gold, which is advancing the Enchi project in Ghana.
SCP expects that Turaco could become one of the next 150,000-200,000oz per annum producers in the region with a resource of 4-5Moz and permits and a final investment decision in hand by the end of next year.
'We also highlight our top picks of the explorers – Sanu in Guinea; Aurum, Awalé and Many Peaks in northern Côte d'Ivoire; and African Gold and Kobo in central Côte d'Ivoire,' Chan said.
'We think these companies have the right combination of ground, quality management and attractive locations to potentially make a discovery and move to production this cycle.'
No resource? No worries
Many Peaks Minerals (ASX:MPK) has the smallest market cap of the ASX-listed companies mentioned in the report and is the only one yet to report a resource.
However, the company has been making rapid progress since acquiring the Ferké gold project from Turaco last year, which has caught the attention of SCP.
Chan said the mineralisation at Many Peaks' Ouarigue target is hosted in a tonalite intrusive unit, which is a similar host setting to the multimillion-ounce Bankan and Fekola deposits.
'We like what we've seen so far for two reasons,' he said, pointing to the consistency of the tonalite mineralisation and the high-grade zone.
On Tuesday, Many Peaks reported that drilling had extended mineralisation along strike and at depth, with increasing widths of the mineralised zones intersected reinforcing the potential for a bulk tonnage target.
New results included 87m at 1.67g/t gold from 221m, including 29m at 3.46g/t gold; and 84m at 1.53g/t gold from 58m, including 2m at 18.1g/t gold and 8m at 2.11g/t gold, including 2m at 7.43g/t gold.
On Wednesday, Many Peaks raised $13.5 million in a heavily supported private placement at 72c per share, a 5% premium to the company's 15-day volume-weighted average price.
The funds will be used to complete drilling and studies for the preparation of an initial resource estimate.
SCP forecasts an initial resource of 300,000-700,000oz of gold at 1-2g/t gold.
'That doesn't include the higher-grade zone – thus we think circa 500,000oz is a good target for an initial MRE at Ouarigue South with potential to expand along strike to the north and south.'

ASX Resources Quarterly Wrap: These QLD stocks are under the radar but not standing still

Red Metal shines a light on iron impurity removal within the heap at Sybella and begins drilling at the Gulf and Three Ways copper-gold project Greenvale doubles down on uranium exploration at the Oasis project and QEM tops up its bank with a ~$2m placement QMines wraps up drilling at Develin Creek while True North Copper kicks off roughly 15,000m of exploration drilling Queensland's copper sector, with more than 150 years of history, has been drawing attention following the closure of Glencore's Mount Isa Mines' underground copper operation. The closure will result in the loss of 500 direct jobs and end Glencore's use of the smelter for its own ore, reducing its interest in operating it for third-party miners. Attention is now shifting to junior copper explorers and near-term producers in the region that could help fill an exacerbating supply gap. Meanwhile, Australia's top coal-producing state is looking to diversify by increasing its push into other resources, targeting faster project approvals and rapid development. Here are some ASX players in Queensland chipping away at their respective projects, carrying out exploration programs and getting on with drilling. Red Metal (ASX:RDM) Red Metal reckons it has a very uncommon rare earth discovery in North West Queensland on its hands at Sybella, and one which could be a source of the particularly prized elements of neodymium and praseodymium. Work there through the quarter showed positive bottle roll pH optimisation on the discovery's Kary zone and optimum economic rare earth oxide leach extractions were achieved at a pH range which highlighted key leach parameters for pending tests. Research also put a spotlight on the scope for iron impurity removal within the heap, and nine large diamond core holes were drilled to prepare for the upcoming testwork. At its Gulf and Three Ways copper-gold project, $400,000 in collaborative drilling grant applications were awarded by the Queensland government for drill tests. Drilling is already underway on a conductive magnetic target at Three Ways and is then set to turn towards a standout gravity target identified at Gulf. And the rig is set to soon rip for RDM on the other side of the country, with Hemi-style gold targets also defined for first drill tests at its Pardoo gold project in Western Australia. Greenvale Energy (ASX:GRV) Greenvale Energy remained focused on its exploration efforts across its uranium landholding in the Northern Territory as well as progressing planning and work efforts its maiden drilling campaign at the Oasis uranium asset in Queensland. Previous exploration has validated high-grade uranium potential at Oasis, setting the stage for drilling of multiple well-defined targets. During the June quarter, the company mobilised exploration teams to the project site and carried out reconnaissance mapping as well as scintillometer surveys to confirm the presence of biotite-rich schists and altered granitic rocks. These findings supported the potential to discover additional mineralised zones with rock chip samples dispatched for assay. QMines (ASX:QML) QMines completed 27 holes for almost 6000m of drilling over the Develin Creek copper-zinc project through the quarter, with two rigs still digging into the high-grade Sulphide City deposit as QML looks to build up a multi-asset production base in Central Queensland. High-grade hits came in to the tune of 2.63% copper, 4.2% zinc and 36.9g/t silver from 13 holes, boding well for further upgrades on a Develin Creek resource now standing at a 70%-indicated 4.2Mt at 1.07% Cu, 1.16% Zn, 0.15g/t Au & 6.0g/t Ag. QML also capped off acquisition of the Mount Mackenzie gold project and promptly upgraded the resource there to now stand at 3.3Mt at 1.4g/t Au and 8.4g/t Ag. The company meanwhile finished off composite bulk concentrate testwork on integrating the Develin Creek ore with that from its Mount Chalmers project, a high-grade historic mine, which now serves as the centre of QMines' growing resource base in the Sunshine State. True North Copper (ASX:TNC) It was all 'drill, baby, drill' for True North this quarter after the company kicked off roughly 15,000m of exploration drilling at its Cloncurry and Mt Oxide projects in Northwest Queensland. The drill bit certainly didn't disappoint as the explorer uncovered a bounty of success at both projects. At Cloncurry's Great Australia Mine, drilling illuminated new zones of significant copper, cobalt and gold mineralisation. Drill hits at Great Australia Mine included 14m at 0.81% copper, 0.12 g/t gold and 749ppm cobalt from 68m, and 12m at 0.65% copper, 0.16% gold and 137ppm cobalt from 142m. Meanwhile at Mt Oxide's Aquila, True North was able to flaunt a new high-grade copper, cobalt and silver discovery. Intersections here included 145m at 0.75% copper, 0.12% cobalt and 2.9 g/t silver from 28m, and 30m at 2.45% copper, 0.02% cobalt and 6.2 g/t silver from 20m. And there's still more to test at Cloncurry after the company identified multiple high-priority drill targets at the Wallace North and Salebury targets. True North's projects sit southwest of the multi-billion-dollar market capped Evolution Mining's (ASX:EVN) Ernest Henry mine. Assays from the remaining drill holes at Mt Oxide are still pending at the time of writing. QEM (ASX:QEM) QEM saw a change of the guard this quarter with the appointment of Robert Cooper as managing director and chief executive. Cooper was appointed in early July, a move that was signalled in May earlier this year. Replacing Gavin Loyden, Cooper brings with him more than 30 years of global mining experience in senior executive leadership and non-executive board roles in the resources and battery materials sectors. QEM also topped up its bank in this period with a $2.05 million placement to support progress at its Julia Creek vanadium and energy project, the company's flagship play east of Mt Isa. Julia Creek possesses one of the single largest undeveloped vanadium and oil shale deposits, with a 2,870Mt resource at 0.31% V205. Currently, 461Mt at 0.28% V2O5 of the resource sits in the indicated category. The project also hosts an in-situ 6.3 million barrels of oil equivalent resource. Interest in vanadium as a battery metal has buoyed over the past decade as an alternative to the widely adopted lithium-ion batteries around the world. Vanadium redox flow batteries were pioneered by Australian chemical engineer Maria Skyllas-Kazacos in the 1980s at the University of New South Wales. 'We remain committed to developing and to positioning QEM as a long-term supplier of vanadium electrolyte for vanadium flow batteries, to support the global energy transition for many decades to come,' Cooper said at the end of June.

ADX bags $2.6M in quarterly sales as Austrian oil-gas output lifts 23%

ADX Energy has clocked a 23 per cent surge in production for the three months to June from its Austrian oil and gas operations. The company has also flicked the switch on a gas-fuelled exploration blitz by launching plans for a multi-well, shallow drilling program in Upper Austria that could open the cash flow gates. The ASX-listed explorer says total output lifted to 303 barrels of oil equivalent per day (BOEPD) for the past three months, up substantially from 246BOEPD in the March quarter. Despite oil prices sliding 10 per cent for the period, the company was still able to eke out a 4 per cent improvement in revenue to €1.56 million (A$2.76 million). Much of the production growth came from the company's Vienna Basin operations, which averaged 238BOEPD, up from 190BOEPD. The improved performance came after a five-well workover program lifted oil and gas production by 25 per cent and 47 per cent, respectively. The program to repair subsurface equipment and clean up holes was completed in March. ADX also used the quarter to supercharge its gas credentials by hooking up a new carbon dioxide removal unit at its Vienna Basin operations, allowing it to meet strict CO₂ specs for grid operator Netz NÖ without relying on third-party blending. The company says the move has boosted its commercial independence and could pave the way for even greater gas production down the track. In the company's Upper Austrian leases, the Anshof-3 and Anshof-2A wells continued to perform, contributing 66 barrels of oil a day during the quarter compared to 56 barrels in the previous quarter. Notably, the revenue line at the Anshof fields has benefited more from ADX's increased stake in the leases after ex-partner Xstate Resources relinquished its 20 per cent stake in exchange for forgiveness of €547,075 (A$971,000) in unpaid cash calls. The move gave ADX 70 per cent of the broader production area and helped solidify its control of the nearby 3000-barrel-per-day capacity permanent production facility. Directly north of the Anshof field, ADX has been busy locking up land covering two new prospects – dubbed Lind and SGB – seen as excellent appraisal and exploration opportunities. The company says that if these prospects eventually deliver the goods, production could be easily tied back into the processing plant at minimal cost. At the same time, ADX has matured three new drill-ready shallow gas prospects in its ADX-AT-II licence area, including the GOLD prospect, which is on track to spud in late 2025 or early 2026. The company says the GOLD, GRAB and ZAUN prospects offer combined mean prospective resources of 13 billion cubic feet (Bcf) and are near key gas infrastructure, boosting their development economics. The trio of prospects form the first cluster of a broader campaign across seven shallow gas targets estimated to hold a total mean prospective resource of 29Bcf. A farmout process is already under way to support a multi-well drilling program. Meanwhile, the company is gearing up to resume testing at its Welchau-1 oil discovery, pending court resolution of environmental objections. Ongoing work during the quarter defined two new follow-up leads – the deeper Welchau target and the Rossberg prospect to the north. ADX is also preparing to firm up its new offshore Sicily Channel gas acreage. The final anti-corruption compliance hurdle has been cleared and the permit is now expected to be formally granted in the third quarter. Results from historic wells and earlier seismic surveys from the Italian leases have pointed to the potential for sweet gas reservoirs and new data acquisition is being planned. In addition to ramping up near-term production growth, ADX is also eyeing a transition to renewables. It has matured a solar project in the Vienna Basin with 5.4 megawatts capacity and is assessing hydrogen storage options in depleted fields. With growing production, drill-ready gas targets and new acreage in play, ADX is well placed to tap rising European demand for clean, local energy sources. Gold Digger: Producers are in the money as gold prices remain in the stratosphere

Gold producers report strong results thanks to high gold prices Prices remain elevated with potential for more gains Capricorn reported record quarterly cash flow of $85.7m in June 2025 quarter Strong US economic may have tamped some of the excitement around gold but giant Canadian global asset manager Fidelity believes the precious metal could be testing the US$4000/oz mark by the end of this year. This scenario could play out if the Federal Reserve begins to cut rates and the US dollar continues to decline. For ASX gold players, though, what's important is that gold soared in the first four months of this year and have remained elevated within a relatively narrow band since then, a point that has proven beneficial to the bottom lines of the producers while giving certainty to the explorers. A case in point is Capricorn Metals (ASX:CMM), which generated a record quarterly cash flow of $85.7m in the June 2025 quarter, up from $80.8m in the previous quarter. This was due in part to increased gold production from its Karlawinda project, which poured 32,216oz of gold at an all-in-sustaining cost of$1381/oz – representing improvements from last quarter's output of 30,599oz gold at an AISC of $1390/oz. Material movement increased by 18% from the March 2025 quarter, reflecting the ongoing mining productivity efforts that delivered the increase in mining volumes throughout FY2025. For the current financial year, Capricorn expects to produce between 115,000 and 125,000oz of gold at AISC of $1530-1630/oz with growth capital of $30-40m as mining transitions to the Karlawinda expansion project following approval from WA's Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety. Full procurement and early site works will commence in the December 2025 quarter. Meanwhile, Ramelius Resources (ASX:RMS) delivered underlying free cash flow of $207.8m during the June 2025 quarter from production of 73,454 ounces gold at an AISC of $1339/oz, well above its guidance of 62,000-72,000 ounce. The company, which has just finished gobbling up Spartan Resources by way of a scheme of arrangement, also noted a sector-leading AISC margin of $3103/oz for the quarter thanks in no small part to the gold price. It wasn't content with just these achievements, though. Ramelius also announced record annual gold production of 301,664oz at an AISC of $1551/oz, exceeding its upgraded production guidance range of 290,000-300,000oz and the bottom of the upgraded AISC guidance range of $1550-1650/oz. For this financial year, the company expects to spend between $80-100m, up from $47.1m in FY2025, to aggressively target high-grade opportunities at the new enlarged Mt Magnet hub. High gold prices also proved to be a boon for Perseus Mining (ASX:PRU), which saw nominal cash flow of $189m from the sale of 131,242oz of gold at an average sale price of US$2977/oz ($4625.60). This offset the increase in AISC from US$1290/oz in the March 2025 quarter up to US$1417/oz in the June 2025 quarter. Perseus adds that for FY2026, it expects to produce between 400,000 and 440,000 ounces of gold at an AISC range of US$1460-1620/oz. Explorers making waves Sunstone Metals (ASX:STM) has seen strong interest on the market since noting in its quarterly that due diligence and discussions with several parties are continuing. These activities cover a range of potential outcomes, including corporate transactions and farm-out agreements on either or both of Bramaderos and El Palmar gold-copper projects in southern and northern Ecuador. Meanwhile, Askari Metals (ASX:AS2) launched regional exploration at its Nejo gold and copper project in Ethiopia to test for high-grade, shallow mineralisation across two major gold corridors. The Guliso trend includes the Soyoma, Dina, Chago and South Chago gold targets and is open along strike in both directions while Guji-Gudeya includes the drill-ready Guji, Komto 1 and Komto 2 gold targets that have seen minimal follow-up despite confirmed gold mineralisation. (ASX:A8G) field mapping has identified a breccia zone associated with a high-chargeability geophysical anomaly at its May Queen gold project. This breccia is some 600 metres in length with widths of up to 170 metres. Partly infilled old prospector diggings are located at the Southern breccia prospect with reconnaissance rock chip sampling returning elevated copper and gold geochemistry while a second IP geophysical anomaly identified is a blind target under cover. Meanwhile, Latitude 66 (ASX:LAT) will receive $2m in cash and $4m worth of shares in Carnaby Resources after Carnaby exercised its right of first refusal to acquire Latitude 66's 17.5% interest in the Greater Duchess copper gold joint venture in Queensland. It follows Latitude signing a non-binding term sheet in early July to sell the interest to Argonaut Partners and Neon Space. Proceeds will be used to progress its assets in WA and Finland.
