Padres' Jake Cronenworth on injured list with rib fracture, recovery timetable unclear

New York Times12-04-2025
SAN DIEGO — After a road trip that included three wins, three losses and three injuries, the San Diego Padres got one key player, right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr., back in the lineup Friday. Another, however, will be sidelined for an undetermined amount of time.
Before a series opener against the visiting Colorado Rockies, second baseman Jake Cronenworth joined center fielder Jackson Merrill (right hamstring strain) on the 10-day injured list with a non-displaced rib fracture. The Padres did not disclose a recovery timetable for Cronenworth, who took a pitch to the ribs Sunday, hit a home run Monday and exited a game Tuesday because of what the team at the time believed was cramping in his ribcage area.

Cronenworth said he learned Thursday, through the results of an MRI, that he had sustained a fracture.
'As far as timelines go, it's unfair to put one on it. (The Padres' medical staff) will take the lead on it,' Padres manager Mike Shildt said. 'But Jake will have a say in it as well. Fortunately, it wasn't displaced, so it's a matter of getting … some of the healing to take place. And then it's a matter of his functionality. Hopefully, it doesn't take too long.'
We have placed INF Jake Cronenworth on the 10-day IL with a non-displaced right rib fracture (retro to 4/9), selected the contract of INF/OF Tyler Wade and transferred RHP Matt Waldron to the 60-day IL.

Cronenworth's stint on the injured list is retroactive to Wednesday, meaning he can return as soon as April 19, but the nature and location of his injury suggest he is in for a more extended absence. To replace him on the active roster, the Padres selected the contract of utility player Tyler Wade and transferred right-hander Matt Waldron (left oblique strain) to the 60-day injured list. Veteran infielder Jose Iglesias will make his second consecutive start at second base Friday night.
Cronenworth said that before he had the MRI, he thought he was only suffering from a bruise. Like Shildt, he declined to discuss specifics of a potential return date.
'Open-ended, I guess,' Cronenworth said. 'A lot of it's going to be hopefully pain tolerance. So, whatever they say the timeline is, hopefully earlier. But yeah, it's only (been) less than 24 hours.'
Cronenworth, 31, was hitting .257 with an .895 OPS and two home runs, one of which he hit with a fractured rib. The Padres, at 10-3, are off to the best start in the majors.
'I wouldn't say (the timing of the injury is) necessarily discouraging,' Cronenworth said. 'I think discouraging would be at the end of the season. I think being only 13 games into the year and hopefully only being out for a little bit of time and being able to finish the rest of the season is something you look forward to.'

With Cronenworth and Merrill on the shelf — Merrill cannot return until Thursday, at the earliest — a top-heavy team will lean on its able-bodied stars. The Padres, then, considered themselves fortunate that Tatis was scheduled to return to the leadoff spot against the Rockies. The right fielder tweaked his surgically repaired left shoulder Tuesday, rested for the next two days and said before Friday's game he was feeling 'great.'
'Everyone feels confident that he's in a position where he can go play baseball,' Shildt said.
Wade, a reserve last season, was designated for assignment March 27. He was outrighted to Triple A last week. Now back with the Padres, he will again fill in at multiple positions and, for now, perhaps mostly in the outfield.
Meanwhile, yet another key player remains on the injured list with no clear timetable. Veteran right-hander Yu Darvish (right elbow inflammation) continues to increase the intensity of his long-toss sessions, but he has yet to resume throwing off a mound.

Guardians outfield prospect Chase DeLauter has surgery on his right wrist

CLEVELAND — Outfielder Chase DeLauter, widely considered one of the top prospects in the Cleveland Guardians organization, had surgery Wednesday to repair a fractured hamate bone in his right wrist. DeLauter is expected to miss 6-8 weeks, which means he could be back for the last week or two of the season. He was examined on Tuesday by wrist/hand specialist Dr. Thomas Graham at Jefferson Orthopedics in Philadelphia. An MRI and clinical exam confirmed a hook of the hamate fracture and surgery was recommended. DeLauter has not played since July 12. He was batting .278 with eight doubles, five homers and 21 RBIs in 34 games at Triple-A Columbus. The 2022 first-round draft pick reached base in all 34 games he played for the Clippers, which led to some wondering when he might be called up. But DeLauter has struggled to stay on the field. He had three stints on the injured list last year and missed the first couple months of this season because of a sports hernia injury he suffered in spring training.

Twins starting pitcher David Festa placed on the 15-day IL with right shoulder inflammation

LOS ANGELES — Minnesota Twins starting pitcher David Festa has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation. The 25-year-old Festa was scheduled to consult with a doctor and get an MRI on Wednesday. The Twins are in Los Angeles to play the Dodgers and were scheduled to head home after the early game. On Monday, Festa allowed four runs on three home runs in 5 1/3 innings. 'He woke up after his outing and his shoulder was sore,' Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. 'He'll have an MRI today and we'll know more (Thursday). We'll see where we're at. I can't talk about any specifics because I don't know any more than his arm didn't feel the way that it should normally feel. There's normal soreness and there's more than that, and this was more than that.' Festa has started 10 games for the Twins, who are 10 1/2 games behind Detroit in the AL Central. Festa is 3-4 this season with a 5.40 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 53 1/2 innings.

Sandy Alcantara outlasts Dylan Cease in pitchers' duel as Marlins defeat Padres 3-2

MIAMI -- Jesús Sánchez hit a two-run homer and 2022 NL Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara pitched seven innings with four strikeouts as the Marlins beat the Padres 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon. Padres' pitcher Dylan Cease (3-10) struggled with control early, walking Miami's first two batters before Augustín Ramírez got the Marlins on the board with a single to center field that drove in Xavier Edwards. San Diego tied things up in the fourth inning after a throwing error from catcher Nick Fortes advanced Luis Arraez to second, and Manny Machado drove him in with a single to left field. The Padres' run was swiftly put to an end, though, after a double play finished the inning with the score tied at 1-1. The Marlins came back when Sánchez hit his ninth home run of the season on a fly ball to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting Miami up 3-1. Cease retired the next two batters to escape the inning but was pulled heading into the sixth. Josh Simpson stepped in as relief for Alcantara in the eighth and gave up a run after pinch-hitter Jose Iglesias hit a single to right field that scored Jackson Merrill. Simpson was quickly replaced by Calvin Faucher, who stranded two runners on base to maintain the one-run lead. Faucher earned the save after throwing 1 2/3 innings to give the Marlins their second consecutive series win. Javier Sanoja reached first base on an errant throw, and Sánchez brought two scores in on a 377-foot home run to right field, giving the Marlins an early 3-1 lead. Alcantara led the charge for the Marlins, posting four strikeouts and zero walks in 98 pitches. He held the Padres' offense to just one run on the afternoon.
