Padres' Jake Cronenworth on injured list with rib fracture, recovery timetable unclear

New York Times12-04-2025
SAN DIEGO — After a road trip that included three wins, three losses and three injuries, the San Diego Padres got one key player, right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr., back in the lineup Friday. Another, however, will be sidelined for an undetermined amount of time.
Before a series opener against the visiting Colorado Rockies, second baseman Jake Cronenworth joined center fielder Jackson Merrill (right hamstring strain) on the 10-day injured list with a non-displaced rib fracture. The Padres did not disclose a recovery timetable for Cronenworth, who took a pitch to the ribs Sunday, hit a home run Monday and exited a game Tuesday because of what the team at the time believed was cramping in his ribcage area.

Cronenworth said he learned Thursday, through the results of an MRI, that he had sustained a fracture.
'As far as timelines go, it's unfair to put one on it. (The Padres' medical staff) will take the lead on it,' Padres manager Mike Shildt said. 'But Jake will have a say in it as well. Fortunately, it wasn't displaced, so it's a matter of getting … some of the healing to take place. And then it's a matter of his functionality. Hopefully, it doesn't take too long.'
We have placed INF Jake Cronenworth on the 10-day IL with a non-displaced right rib fracture (retro to 4/9), selected the contract of INF/OF Tyler Wade and transferred RHP Matt Waldron to the 60-day IL.

Cronenworth's stint on the injured list is retroactive to Wednesday, meaning he can return as soon as April 19, but the nature and location of his injury suggest he is in for a more extended absence. To replace him on the active roster, the Padres selected the contract of utility player Tyler Wade and transferred right-hander Matt Waldron (left oblique strain) to the 60-day injured list. Veteran infielder Jose Iglesias will make his second consecutive start at second base Friday night.
Cronenworth said that before he had the MRI, he thought he was only suffering from a bruise. Like Shildt, he declined to discuss specifics of a potential return date.
'Open-ended, I guess,' Cronenworth said. 'A lot of it's going to be hopefully pain tolerance. So, whatever they say the timeline is, hopefully earlier. But yeah, it's only (been) less than 24 hours.'
Cronenworth, 31, was hitting .257 with an .895 OPS and two home runs, one of which he hit with a fractured rib. The Padres, at 10-3, are off to the best start in the majors.
'I wouldn't say (the timing of the injury is) necessarily discouraging,' Cronenworth said. 'I think discouraging would be at the end of the season. I think being only 13 games into the year and hopefully only being out for a little bit of time and being able to finish the rest of the season is something you look forward to.'

With Cronenworth and Merrill on the shelf — Merrill cannot return until Thursday, at the earliest — a top-heavy team will lean on its able-bodied stars. The Padres, then, considered themselves fortunate that Tatis was scheduled to return to the leadoff spot against the Rockies. The right fielder tweaked his surgically repaired left shoulder Tuesday, rested for the next two days and said before Friday's game he was feeling 'great.'
'Everyone feels confident that he's in a position where he can go play baseball,' Shildt said.
Wade, a reserve last season, was designated for assignment March 27. He was outrighted to Triple A last week. Now back with the Padres, he will again fill in at multiple positions and, for now, perhaps mostly in the outfield.
Meanwhile, yet another key player remains on the injured list with no clear timetable. Veteran right-hander Yu Darvish (right elbow inflammation) continues to increase the intensity of his long-toss sessions, but he has yet to resume throwing off a mound.

Padres Land All-Star Red Sox Outfielder In Loaded Hypothetical Trade

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. There have been a lot of rumors swirling around Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran ahead of the trade deadline. Most of these rumors link Duran to the San Diego Padres. Could a deal come to fruition? FanSided's Chris Landers recently pitched a blockbuster trade idea that would send Duran to the Padres in exchange for Jeremiah Estrada, Boston Bateman, and Romeo Sanabria. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 18: Jarren Duran #16 of the Boston Red Sox in action against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on July 18, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 18: Jarren Duran #16 of the Boston Red Sox in action against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on July 18, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois."Duran is the ideal target for San Diego, someone who can fill the gaping void this team has in left field both this year and beyond," Landers wrote. "And it sounds like the Red Sox are at least open to moving him if the price is right and allowing Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu and Roman Anthony to become their everyday trio. "And it's hard to overstate the impact Duran would have for the Padres, who have arguably the worst left-field situation in the entire sport right now. He's not as good as he was in his breakout 2024 season, but he's warming up of late, and he's a reliably above-average bat with tremendous athleticism in the field and on the bases." There's not a better left field solution for the Padres than Duran. Not only does the young star have the talent, but he's not a rental, which makes him especially valuable to San Diego. For the Red Sox, they might need another prospect to make this deal worthwhile. Estrada would be a huge piece to add to the team, but beyond that, the prospect return isn't quite worthy of landing a star like Duran. The Red Sox aren't being forced to trade the former All-Star. If they move him, it's because they're blown away by a trade package. The Padres make a lot of sense as a landing spot, but the front office is going to need to pony up some prospects to make it happen. Dodgers Receive Encouraging Update Regarding Tanner Scott's Injury

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Los Angeles Dodgers know they have to add to the bullpen with all of the injuries their relievers have endured this season. One of those relievers is All-Star closer Tanner Scott. While he hasn't performed as well as he has in the past, the Dodgers know he's a major piece of their bullpen. The team received some very encouraging news after Tuesday night's game. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JULY 21: Tanner Scott #66 of the Los Angeles Dodgers reacts as he leaves the game with medical staff during the ninth inning against the Minnesota Twins at Dodger Stadium on... LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JULY 21: Tanner Scott #66 of the Los Angeles Dodgers reacts as he leaves the game with medical staff during the ninth inning against the Minnesota Twins at Dodger Stadium on July 21, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. More"In what could be the latest bullet the Dodgers have dodged on the injury front recently, Scott was put on the injured list Tuesday with what was only diagnosed as "elbow inflammation" — ensuring his season won't be over after exiting Monday's game with a "stinging sensation" in his forearm," Jack Harris wrote for the Los Angeles Times. "On Tuesday, Scott got an MRI that he said showed no ligament or structural damage in his left throwing arm." The Dodgers came into the season with high expectations for Scott as their new closer after signing him in free agency away from the San Diego Padres. While players obviously don't enjoy missing time or going on the injured list, this news is as good as it gets for the All-Star closer. "Definitely when it was happening, I had no clue what was going on because I've never had an arm issue in my entire career," Scott told the LA Times. "It kept getting worse and I'm like, 'I have no clue what it is.' But after today, it kind of gave me like a clear head." Even if Scott was healthy, the Dodgers would be pursuing at least one high-leverage reliever at the trade deadline. However, this update likely saved them from having to splurge on a second reliever.
