
Difficult to fit automatic doors on existing non-AC locals: Rly official
This will be a feature in new non-AC locals, as was announced by the railway board following the Mumbra train tragedy.
"Since it's a safety item, developing a new door takes 2-3 years with regulatory and certifications," said the official. "There are around 250 non-AC rakes and they will be phased out as new trains are manufactured."
Govt may expedite the process of phasing out the existing coaches. "Passengers' safety is top priority and so, budget is not an issue.
There will be issues initially, but we are confident that people will understand its importance and accept it," said the official.
Sources said CR will try fitting automated doors in non-AC coaches when new trains with this feature are manufactured. "Once the first such non-AC trains are operated, we will get passengers' feedback. Faster replacement of existing non-AC coaches is possible as general managers can take such decisions. Existing trains can be used on less crowded suburban networks," said a source. —Dipak Dash

This development comes a few hours after an Air India aircraft operating a Kochi-Mumbai flight veered off the runway after touchdown at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) amid heavy rain. There has been a slew of disruptions to flight operations in the aftermath of the Air India crash in Ahmedabad in June — which killed 260 people, including 241 of the 242 on board — with airlines cancelling, rescheduling, and diverting flights with more frequency. Last month, an Air India flight headed to Delhi had to return to Hong Kong owing to a technical issue. The flight, AI315, was a Boeing 788. On the same day, an Air India Express flight bound for Ranchi returned to Delhi airport due to a suspected technical snag. On June 13, an Air India flight heading to New Delhi from Phuket received a bomb threat and made a precautionary landing back at Phuket.

New Delhi: An Air India flight from Delhi to Kolkata aborted a take-off while the aircraft was accelerating down the runway due to a technical issue detected just in time. The pilots applied brakes to stop the aircraft, which was travelling at 155 km per hour. Flight AI2403 was scheduled to take off at 5:30 pm today for Kolkata, but a technical issue was detected and the pilots, "following a Standard Operating Procedure", decided not to go ahead with the take-off. The airline in a statement said, "Flight AI2403 operating from Delhi to Kolkata on 21 July 2025 has been rescheduled to depart later this evening, necessitated by a technical issue detected during the take-off roll.
