Vietnam removes 10 wildlife trafficking groups from social media
HANOI: Ten private social media groups involved in the illegal online sale of wildlife have been permanently removed from online platforms, as part of a campaign launched by Education for Nature Vietnam (ENV) to combat illegal wildlife trading, ENV announced on Thursday (May 15).
The campaign, titled 'Day Against Online Wildlife Crime,' began in February and has since taken place regularly on the third Wednesday of each month, according to Deputy Director of ENV Nguyen Thi Phuong Dung.
She highlighted that 101,088 user accounts were associated with the removed groups, all now permanently disabled.
"These accounts had previously participated in sharing, accessing or trading wildlife products," Dung said, adding that the removal marks a significant step toward cleaning up illegal activities in online spaces.
ENV has scheduled the next event for the campaign on May 21. The group urges the public to report violations on Facebook and spread awareness to eliminate illegal wildlife trading.
In 2024, ENV detected 206,927 instances of live animals and wildlife products being advertised for sale on Facebook. - Vietnam News/ANN

According to the charge, the comment provoked anger and was likely to cause a breach of public peace. Prosecuting officer Herman Kayae handled the prosecution while R Balamurali represented Toraise. Earlier, Balamurali appealed for a lighter sentence, saying that his client is a single father raising two children and earned only RM1,000 to RM1,500 a month from a small business. He also said Toraise had pleaded guilty, expressed remorse, and apologised for his actions. Herman, however, asked the court to impose a fair sentence as a deterrent, stressing that the accused's actions could disrupt harmony. Ramli, who is also a Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker, became Malaysia's first Orang Asli MP when he was elected to the Cameron Highlands seat in a by-election in 2019. He won with a majority of 3,238 votes. He defended the seat for a second term in the 2022 general election, winning with a greater majority of 4,544 votes. The Orang Asli development department (Jakoa) had issued reminders that Jakun and Sakai, while being indigenous groups, carry a negative connotation.

According to a post on JPJ Sarawak's official Facebook page, the vehicle was seized during 'Ops Luxury', an operation focusing on luxury vehicles that fail to comply with road regulations. 'Such offences not only reflect a negligent attitude towards legal obligations but also pose potential safety risks to other road users,' it stated. JPJ Sarawak emphasised that Ops Luxury demonstrates its commitment to the principle that no one is above the law, regardless of whether they drive a regular or luxury vehicle. This approach reinforces that complying with regulations is a shared responsibility for public safety. JPJ Sarawak advises all vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicles are legally compliant, not excessively modified, and covered by valid insurance and road tax. 'The law does not recognise status, and safety is a right for everyone on the road. No amount of luxury can ever replace the value of a human life,' it added.
