Maharashtra sees slight petrol-diesel price relief; Mumbai remains cheapest
The 6 AM revision showed petrol continuing above 104 per litre across most districts, while diesel remained over 90 statewide, with international crude trends and local levies maintaining pressure on household budgets.
Mumbai maintained its position as the lowest-cost metro, with petrol at 103.50 and diesel at 90.03 per litre. Significant variations persist across regions: Ahmednagar (104.30 petrol, 90.83 diesel), Aurangabad (104.73 petrol, 91.24 diesel), and Beed report the highest at 105.50 for petrol alongside 92.03 for diesel. Multiple districts, including Hingoli, Parbhani, and Yavatmal, matched Beed's peak petrol rate.
The slight downward adjustment reflects recent global oil market movements, though Value-Added Tax (VAT), transportation costs, and state-specific taxes continue to influence regional disparities. Daily price revisions by oil marketing companies ensure alignment with international benchmarks.
While today's dip provides fractional respite, economists note fuel costs remain a critical inflation indicator, with further volatility expected amid fluctuating crude markets and domestic fiscal policies.

Indian medical devices exports to US hinges on Trump's tariff on China: Rajiv Nath, AiMeD
Chennai, July 31 (UNI) Indian exports of medical devices can increase to the US if the American import duties on Indian goods are 15-20% lower as compared to the duties levied on Chinese products, said Rajiv Nath, Forum Coordinator, Association of Indian Medical Device Industry (AiMeD). Nath also said the medical devices should also find it feasible to absorb the FDA approval costs and deeming these export costs sustainable. He also said it is premature to comment on US-India tariffs until official announcement. 'US buyers are looking to diversify their supply chains away from China, and India represents a viable alternative, assuming it can ensure quality, competitive pricing, and agility, while also adhering to environmental, social, and corporate responsibility standards,' Nath added. On the lower US import duties on some Asian nations, Nath cautioned that India could face a loss of competitiveness to Indonesia and Vietnam especially in rubber-based products due to their advantageous 19% tariffs within China+1 procurement sourcing options to US buyers. India has to enhance its competitiveness in areas beyond pricing. According to him, greater clarity would be achieved after August 12, upon confirmation of duties on Chinese goods. He noted that these duties, which had previously been increased to over 50% before a temporary reduction to 30%, would provide a benchmark. 'Should duties on Chinese medical devices return to levels exceeding 50% post-August, and should duties on Indian devices by USA are established at 25%, export prospects to the US would likely remain favorable in comparison to China,' Nath said. The ultimate impact of duties on the Indian medical device sector is dependent on relative competitiveness. A duty differential of 15-20% between Chinese and Indian products would favor Indian exports to the USA, potentially incentivizing the establishment of production lines within the US. According to him, Indonesia and Vietnam currently benefit from 6% lower duties at 19% affording them a price advantage, and that the Indian government and manufacturers must work to improve competitiveness to mitigate this 6% disadvantage relative to their Indonesian and Vietnamese counterparts. India's exports of medical devices to USA were Rs. 5,667 crore in 2024 up by 2% from preceding year. Imports from USA were Rs.12,552 crore up by 11% from preceding year. USA is the dominant supplier to India of medical devices with the highest market share of 18 % followed closely by China at 16%, Nath remarked. According to him, the top five exports to USA are: Endoscopes, Orthopedic implants, MRI equipment, Urinary Catheters & Electrocardiographs. The top five Imports from USA are: MRI machine, Orthopaedic Joint implants, IVD Analysers, X Ray Equipment and Cardiac Catheters. UNI VJ RN

Congress MP gives adjournment motion notice in LS over US tariffs on Indian exports
New Delhi, July 31 (UNI) Congress MP Manickam Tagore has submitted adjournment notice in the Lok Sabha today to discuss the govt's failure in preventing the imposition of 25 per cent tariffs and additional penalties by the United States on Indian exports. Opposition MPs have started targeting the Modi-led NDA government a day after US announced 25 per cent tariffs on imports from India starting from Friday. In the notice, Tagore termed the situation an 'economic and diplomatic failure,' stating that these measures will severely impact some of India's most competitive and employment-intensive export sectors, including automobiles and auto components, steel and aluminium, electronics and smartphones, solar modules, pharmaceuticals, marine products, processed food, agriculture, and gems and jewellery. The motion highlights that the US administration has cited India's 'non-tariff barriers' and 'unfair trade practices' as the premise for the action. India's trade surplus with the US was USD 45.7 billion in 2024. Tagore also expressed his concern regarding economic fallout, especially in MSME belts, where the impact could lead to production disruption, order cancellations, job losses, and long-term damage to India's export reputation. He estimated that 6-8 lakh MSMEs could directly or indirectly be affected, putting 40-50 lakh jobs at risk across sectors (15-20 lakh workers in automobiles, 20 in gems and jewellery, over 10 lakh in marine products, processed foods, and agriculture). The notice also criticised the government for its silence on India's recent trade proximity with Russia that may have contributed to the US action, and said that no statement has been placed before parliament by either the Prime Minister or the concerned ministers (Minister of External Affairs, Commerce). 'The lack of strategic communication and transparency on foreign alignment is a serious concern,' the MP said, also adding that Parliament had not been taken into confidence despite the gravity of the situation. The adjournment motion seeks to initiate an urgent discussion in the House on the government's handling of the issue, its impact on trade and employment, lack of transparency, and the need for corrective diplomatic measures and MSME support.
