SMEs to benefit as Affin Bank expands footprint in Sarawak with new branch
KUCHING (April 27): Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are set to benefit from stronger financial support with the launch of Affin Bank Berhad's latest branch at iCOM Square here today.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the opening of the new branch signals not only the expansion of Affin's footprint in Sarawak but also the bank's commitment to empowering local businesses to thrive in a rapidly evolving economy.
'SMEs are not just contributors to the GDP – they are the heartbeat of Sarawak's economy. They create jobs, power local innovation, and serve as the primary engine of inclusive growth.
'To unlock their full potential, we must continue building an environment where local enterprises can thrive, through better access to financing, business support services, and digital capabilities,' he said in his speech which was delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at the official launch of Affin iCOM Square Branch here today.
Abang Johari commended Affin Bank for playing a key role in this ecosystem.
'From facilitating access to working capital and trade finance, to enabling operational efficiency and digitalisation, Affin has taken deliberate steps to meet the evolving needs of entrepreneurs in Sarawak.
'These efforts go beyond products. They reflect Affin's commitment to building real value by empowering local businesses to compete, scale, and lead,' he said.
The Premier emphasised that meaningful development must begin with access to capital, financial services, and tools that enable entrepreneurship and upward mobility.
'For our rural communities, small businesses, and youth stepping into the digital economy, banking must not only be accessible but empowering as well.
'With Affin's comprehensive range of banking products and services, Sarawak is paving the way for a more financially inclusive society where opportunity reaches all,' he said.
He also said that a robust financial system is essential for a thriving economy.
'Affin plays a crucial role in this transformation. Its integrated structure combining Affin Bank, Affin Islamic, and Affin Hwang Investment Bank provides a seamless platform for individuals, businesses, and investors alike.'
With plans to expand its branch network in Sarawak from eight to 14 by the end of the year, Affin is making strides in bringing financial services closer to communities across the state, ensuring no one is left behind, he added.
In highlighting that Sarawak's major projects such as the Tanjung Embang deep-sea port, the new international airport, and the Borneo Renewable Energy Corridor would require financial models rooted in long-term value creation, Abang Johari said Affin's ability to provide financial solutions and support are key to bridging that vision with the capital to make it a reality.
He stressed that banking must be responsive, locally attuned, and digitally enabled to meet the demands of a modern, connected Sarawak.
'The launch of this branch reflects our collective journey — a journey toward a more financially inclusive, economically competitive, and socially resilient Sarawak,' he said.
Also present were Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, Affin Bank Berhad chairman Dato Agil Natt, Affin Bank president and group chief executive officer Datuk Wan Razly Abdullah.

Bintulu power capacity to reach 1GW by 2035 for industrial growth
BINTULU: Sarawak is set to develop two gas-fired power plants, each with a capacity of 500 megawatts, raising Bintulu's total power generation to one gigawatt by 2035. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that this initiative aims to meet both local energy demands and investor needs, particularly in Bintulu's expanding industrial and green technology sectors. 'The comprehensive development plan also includes the construction of an international school in Bintulu, to attract professional workers and foreign investors to reside and settle here,' he said during the opening of a hotel in Bintulu. Abang Johari highlighted Bintulu's transformation from a natural gas discovery hub into a thriving industrial centre, driven by investments in liquefied natural gas (LNG) and infrastructure like ports and hotels. He noted that this growth extends beyond Kidurong to Samalaju, positioning Bintulu as a key economic zone. To further enhance connectivity, a hydrogen-powered autonomous rail transit (ART) system will be introduced under the 13th Malaysia Plan, linking Bintulu, Kidurong, and Samalaju. 'Bintulu will be the second city after Kuching to adopt the ART system, improving accessibility and sustainable development,' he added. Abang Johari also emphasised Bintulu's global recognition as one of 36 low-carbon industrial clusters, reinforcing its status as a strategic investment destination. – Bernama

Plough profits back into Sarawak's economy, Abg Jo tells businesses in the state

He cited Shin Yang Group of Companies, which has made significant investments in Sarawak's property sector. 'I appreciate companies like Shin Yang that make money in Sarawak and give back to Sarawak. 'There are also companies making profits here but choosing to invest elsewhere,' he said today when officially opening Imperial Hotel Bintulu – the town's first 5-star hotel. He urged local industry players to emulate companies that channel their gains into supporting local infrastructure, job creation, and economic growth. 'This kind of investment reflects the private sector's confidence in Bintulu's ongoing development,' he said. Recounting Bintulu's journey, Abang Johari said the town has evolved from a gas discovery site to a key industrial hub with the establishment of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant and Bintulu Port Authority, projects initiated under the leadership former chief ministers the late Tun Datuk Patinggi Abdul Rahman Yakub and continued by the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud. 'The transformation began with Kidurong and has now expanded rapidly to Samalaju,' he said, emphasising the need for quality infrastructure, international-standard hotels, and conference facilities to accommodate growing economic activities and foreign visitors. Abang Johari said when he assumed the role of Chief Minister in 2017, he committed to launching Bintulu's 'second wave' of development. This included the opening of new areas such as Kampung Jepak, where he promised to build a bridge connecting the old town with the new development. 'I had said Jepak Jaya would be like Petra Jaya in Kuching. Now in 2025, that vision is being realised,' he said. Abang Johari pointed out Bintulu has been recognised by the World Economic Forum as one of the world's 36 Emerging Transition Industrial Clusters – one of only two in Asia. 'Now we are being watched by the world, the potential of Bintulu meaning, not only we provide low carbon industry but also provide basic infrastructure including properties and comfortable hotel and venue for conferences,' he said. To further enhance connectivity, he outlined plans for the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system powered by hydrogen to link Kidurong to Samalaju with Bintulu as the central hub. Abang Johari also highlighted plans to reinforce water and power supply in Bintulu. 'A 500MW gas turbine power plant is currently under construction, with another 500MW plant planned eventually providing 1GW power capacity to meet growing demand from both locals and investors,' he said. With anticipated population growth, Abang Johari said Bintulu will also require international schools and other supporting infrastructure. 'There will be continued investment from both the government and private sector. With this, Bintulu will continue to grow and prosper,' he said. Among those present at the event were State Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Shin Yang Group of Companies group executive chairman Tan Sri Datuk Ling Chiong Ho, and Shin Yang Group of Companies group executive vice chairman and group managing director Datuk James Ling Lu Kiong. Bintulu's Power Capacity To Hit 1GW By 2035 To Drive Industrial Growth
KUCHING, July 23 (Bernama) -- Sarawak is set to develop two gas-fired power plants, with a capacity of 500 megawatts each, which will increase Bintulu's total power generation capacity to one gigawatt by 2035. Sarawak Premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, said that the initiative is aimed not only at meeting the needs of the local population, but also at fulfilling the demands of investors, particularly in the rapidly growing industrial and green technology sectors in Bintulu. 'The comprehensive development plan also includes the construction of an international school in Bintulu, to attract professional workers and foreign investors to reside and settle here,' he said, during the opening of a hotel in Bintulu, today. Abang Johari, recalling Bintulu's development history, said that it began with the discovery of natural gas and subsequent investments in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, which spurred the construction of ports and other essential facilities, such as hotels and accommodation for industry players. He noted that this investment-driven development model has transformed Bintulu into a new growth hub, encompassing not only the Kidurong area, but also extending to Samalaju. 'This rapid development necessitates the provision of comfortable facilities, including international-class hotels, to meet the needs of tourists, delegations and investors. 'To further support Bintulu's economic growth, a high-tech autonomous rail transit (ART) system, powered by hydrogen, will be implemented under the 13th Malaysia Plan, connecting three strategic locations - Bintulu, Kidurong and Samalaju,' he said. He added that Bintulu will be the second city after Kuching to have the ART system, which will enhance accessibility, facilitate movement, and promote sustainable development. 'As I mentioned in Miri recently, Bintulu is now globally recognised as one of the 36 low-carbon industrial clusters in the world. This demonstrates that Bintulu has become a key global focus,' he said.
