Brazil police search ex-president Bolsonaro's home, political headquarters

Brazil's federal police searched former president Jair Bolsonaro's house and political headquarters on Friday, adding to the legal pressure that US President
Donald Trump has tried to end by threatening a steep tariff on Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro's press office reported the searches but gave no further details. Police in a statement said they had issued search warrants ordered by the country's Supreme Court, but did not name Bolsonaro, who governed Latin America's largest country from 2019 to 2022.
Lawmakers from Bolsonaro's right-wing Liberal Party said the former president had been ordered to wear an ankle monitor, stop using social media and cease communications with diplomats.
They said Bolsonaro was also banned from contacting key allies including his son Eduardo, a Brazilian congressman who has been lobbying in Washington to help his father. On social media, the lawmaker tied the latest court order to a video his father released on Thursday thanking Trump for his support.

Trump celebrates surprise axing of Stephen Colbert's ‘Late Show'

US President Donald Trump has celebrated the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, calling its long-running host talentless, days after Colbert criticised his corporate owners for striking a legal deal with Trump. 'I absolutely love that Colbert got fired,' Trump wrote on social media on Friday. 'His talent was even less than his ratings,' he said of Colbert, who is known for his biting humour and nightly criticism of the president. US broadcaster CBS announced on Thursday that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end in May 2026, stunning both fans and the entertainment world. The show has been the most-watched programme across late-night television in the US for years. The broadcaster described the move as 'purely a financial decision' and said it was not related to the comedic content or the business turmoil within Paramount Global, the ailing corporate owner of CBS.

Brazil court orders raids on ex-president Bolsonaro for colluding with Trump

Brazil's Supreme Court issued search warrants and restraining orders against former president Jair Bolsonaro on Friday, banning him from contacting foreign officials for allegedly courting the interference of US President Donald Trump Federal police raided Bolsonaro's home and he was ordered to wear an ankle monitor, adding the legal pressure that Trump has tried to relieve with a steep tariff on Brazilian goods. The court's crackdown on Bolsonaro added to signs that Trump's tactics could backfire in Brazil , compounding trouble for his ideological ally and rallying public support behind a defiant leftist government. Bolsonaro was also banned from contacting foreign officials, using social media and approaching embassies, according to the decision issued by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who cited a 'concrete possibility' of him fleeing the country. He added that Bolsonaro had asked the 'head of state of a foreign nation' to interfere in the Brazilian courts, which he characterised as an attack on national sovereignty. Trump says he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize, but not everyone agrees

In a world barely able to keep up with the headlines that US President Donald Trump generates with policies that routinely challenge convention, he is revving up on another front that will guarantee global chatter: a bid for a Nobel Peace Prize. Last week, Trump expressed gratitude after a USA Today columnist argued that he was 'the last person the Norwegian Nobel Committee would honour with its Peace Prize. Yet, it should.' 'Thank you USA TODAY. So nice!' he wrote on his Truth Social account. Last month he complained that he wouldn't get the prize 'no matter what I do'. The message appears to be resonating with some world leaders and lawmakers, as nominations for the 'America first' president roll in, aided by the fact that anyone can submit a nomination through a letter to the Nobel Committee in Oslo, Norway. This month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu endorsed his bid after the government of Pakistan and at least two Republican lawmakers did so in recent weeks. During a meeting with Trump on July 9, Gabonese President Brice Oligui Nguema said that he believed he 'does deserve a Nobel Peace Prize'.
