A cinematic toast to Ireland's culinary and drinks legacy

Irish Post23-05-2025
A SIP OF IRISH, written and directed by Frank Mannion, will be released in UK cinemas on June 20th.
The Swipe film production celebrates the story of Ireland's contribution to the culinary and drinks world with some unexpected discoveries along the way.
It features Deirdre O'Carroll the blender of Jameson whiskey, publican Oisin Rogers and chef JR Ryall of Ballymaloe, as well as appearances from Michael Flatley, Anna Haugh, Bo Barrett of Napa Valley's Chateau Montelena, Jurassic Park actor Sam Neill (the Omagh-born actor and star of Jurassic Park and Peaky Blinders) Pat Shortt, Laura Whitmore, Una Healy and even Prince Albert of Monaco (a big whiskey lover).

The Donegal-based Muff Liquor Co., in which Russell Crowe is an investor, is also featured and there are insights from wine writer Oz Clarke.
The documentary was filmed locally in London at the Devonshire in Soho as well as in the South Downs (at Dermot Sugrue's wine estate), Killahora Orchards, Ballyfin and Ballymaloe.
Midleton Distillery in Cork also made an appearance — as did substantial footage from The Irish Post Awards 2024, which Michael Flatley, Laura Whitmore and Una Healy all attended.

The film also has a chapter about the Wine Geese, so parts of the footage were filmed at the Medoc Marathon — known as the world's slowest marathon as there are 23 wine stops).
Frank Mannion told The Irish Post: ''Irish wine' is served as the marathon runners pass through Chateau MacCarthy, Lynch Bages and Phelan Segur - Thomas Lynch the founder was from Galway and Bernard Phelan was from Tipperary, so it's a marathon that is very Irish in spirit.'

‘Israel is committing genocide' beamed on screen at Fontaines DC gig

'Free Palestine' and 'Israel is committing genocide' were beamed on the screen at Fontaines DC's sold-out London show. Grian Chatten, lead singer of the Irish post-punk band, struck a commanding presence on Saturday night as he walked along the gangway above the 45,000-person crowd. Wearing a kilt and a Sinead O'Connor t-shirt, he energised the audience, at times carrying the microphone by the pole or performing empty-handed. He rarely broke the music to speak, but dedicated one song to his 'little girl' and briefly echoed a chant of 'free Palestine' that was started by the audience. Fontaines DC at the 2020 NME Awards (David Parry/PA) Grainy live recordings of the Finsbury Park performance and crowd played on large screens on either side of the stage. Both screens cut from the vintage-style footage to 'Free Palestine' written in the gothic font of the band's logo, as Chatten sang the I Love You lyrics: 'Selling genocide and half-cut pride, I understand. I had to be there from the start, I had to be the f****** man'. A piece of music equipment on the north London stage was wrapped in a Palestinian flag and onlookers also waved them in the crowd. Ecstatic fans of the five-person Brit award-winning band descended into mosh pits for several songs, including upbeat Here's the Thing. Their slower track Romance was preceded by a minutes-long montage of surreal clips, including a pig and a crying heart-shaped head in different snow globes. The last song finished and 'Israel is committing genocide. Use your voice' came up on the screens. Chatten closed the set with simply 'cheers London, thank you very much' and a wave. Prior to the performance, Chatten joined Kneecap, who were supporting, to perform their collaboration Better Way To Live. Wearing a silver jacket and glasses, he embraced and sang with the trio and shouted 'free Palestine'. Australian rock band Amyl and the Sniffers also warmed up for the band. Kerry Condon living life in the fast lane after F1 role

The F1 blockbuster starring Tipperary's Kerry Condon has roared into pole position in the battle of the summer blockbusters, leaving the movie's big-budget rivals trailing in the rear-view mirror. And the Irish actress's critically acclaimed debut as a Hollywood leading lady – opposite superstar Brad Pitt – is set to propel her onto a new level of fame and fortune, according to industry experts. Los Angeles-based Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore media analytics told 'Being in a summer blockbuster brings Kerry Condon, her great acting and her persona to a much broader audience. For her to grab this role is huge for her career.' Kerry Condon in the new F1 movie. Pic: File F1 grossed almost €50m on its opening weekend alone, according to the latest industry figures. Over the past week, this has accelerated to more than €150m. The film is considered to be Apple Studios' first genuine box office hit, even outperforming Napoleon and Killers of the Flower Moon. Condon's performance sees her take the role of Kate McKenna, F1 technical director and Sonny's (Pitt) love interest. 'She held her own and there's some heavy hitters in that movie, Javier Bardem, Damson Idris, obviously Brad Pitt,' said Mr Dergarabedian. Kerry Condon. Pic: Julien M. Hekimian/Getty Images 'She's fantastic. Yeah, and it's a source for a lot of pride, Irish pride.' F1 is already on track to be the biggest film of the year, with figures provided by Comscore showing it's already overtaken other July heavy hitters, including the Scarlett Johansson-starring Jurassic World: Rebirth. 'This is one of the most competitive summer movie seasons ever, and it'll continue as well,' Mr Dergarabedian told 'The thing about F1, it's a very international sport, and the cast is very international, the locations are global. So it really has universal appeal.' While Condon has hit A-Lister status with the F1 'popcorn hit', the down-to-earth Thurles native has mostly eschewed life in the fast lane. In past interviews, she stressed she is more than happy to 'fly under the radar' of fame, spending most of her free time at her farm and horse sanctuary just outside Seattle.
