Will quit politics if Congress loses 2026 polls: Kerala Leader of Opposition

India Today6 days ago
Leader of the Opposition in Kerala, VD Satheesan has declared that he will quit politics if the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) fails to secure a landslide majority in the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections. His remarks came in response to a challenge posed by prominent Ezhava leader and SNDP Yogam General Secretary Vellappally Natesan.Natesan, speaking to a regional news channel, had said he would resign from his position if the UDF won 100 seats in the next assembly elections. He also asked whether Satheesan would go into 'political exile' if the UDF failed to achieve such a majority. Natesan had earlier accused Satheesan of harbouring anti-Ezhava sentiments.advertisementResponding to these comments, Satheesan told the media after visiting the family of a Kerala nun arrested in Chhattisgarh that he was not interested in competing or arguing with Natesan. However, he said Natesan had inadvertently acknowledged the UDF's potential to win big.
'He has openly told a truth: if the UDF gets 98 seats, he will resign. So he has no doubt about us getting at least 97 seats. A mature and intelligent community leader like him, who follows Kerala politics closely, has acknowledged that,' Satheesan said.He added, 'If we get the remaining four or five seats, it will exceed a hundred. We will work hard and make it more than a hundred seats. But there is no challenge with him. He is asking if I will go into political exile if I cannot bring the UDF back to power with a good majority. If I cannot bring the UDF back to power with a good majority, I will go into political exile. You will not see me after that.''Even if UDF wins more than 100 seats, Vellappally need not resign. Let him remain in that position for life,' he said. 'There is no competition between him and me.'- EndsMust Watch

Tejashwi Yadav committed crime by keeping two voter IDs: BJP

IANS RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav's The BJP alleged on Sunday that RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has committed a crime by keeping two voter IDs, noting that his Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC) number he cited at a presser was different from the one he officially carries. A day after the Elections Commission refuted his claim that his name was missing from the draft electoral rolls in Bihar, the BJP sharpened its attack on the opposition leader. "The Congress and RJD have been thoroughly exposed... Did you (Yadav) lie under oath? Did you present wrong facts to the Election Commission," BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra asked at a press conference. Patra noted that the voter ID the RJD leader had submitted in his 2020 poll affidavit was different from the one he had mentioned on Saturday to claim that his name was missing from the electoral rolls prepared after the contentious Special Intensive Revision accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his ally Yadav of resorting to lies to weaken and insult constitutional institutions like the Election Commission and to dent India's stature. If a party leader like Yadav carries two voter IDs, then what will its workers be doing, the BJP spokesperson asked, claiming that it showed RJD members cast votes at two places to inflate support for their party. Mocking Gandhi, he said his claim of having an atom bomb to expose rigging of polls by the BJP with alleged connivance by the EC was a "damp squib" like Pakistan's nuclear threat to desperation of Gandhi and Yadav, he claimed, was not to save constitutional bodies or the country but to save their families. All the likes of Sonia Gandhi and Lalu Prasad Yadav want is for their children to settle down in politics, he said. Patra claimed that not a single complaint has come from booth agents of political parties about any name being deleted from electoral rolls in Bihar. Yadav's "lies" about EPIC are a harbinger of his party's epic defeat in the assembly polls, expected to be held in October-November, he added. Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday claimed that his name was missing in the draft electoral rolls published in Bihar and, when met with a rebuttal, insisted that there was a "change" in EPIC number allotted to him. At the press conference, Patra also cited NCP (Sharad Pawar) leader Jitendra Ahwad's reported comment that Sanatan Dharma has ruined India to hit out at opposition parties for insulting Hindus. Sanatan is truth and what he has said is like insulting truth and Shiva, Patra claimed. He asked Sharad Pawar and his daughter and Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule to explain if Ahwad spoke for the party or offered his personal opinion. Ahwad had sought to draw a distinction between Sanatan Dharma and Hinduism, alleging that the former targeted Maratha empire founder Shivaji and iconic Dalit leader B R Ambedkar. Asked about Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar's claim about India not being able to present evidence to link Pakistan to the Pahalgam attack, Patra cited media reports that funeral in absentia was held across the border for a terrorist recently killed by security forces. Various Congress leaders keep making remarks favouring Pakistan, he said.

'Voter flagging disproportionately high in opposition strongholds': Manickam Tagore demands discussion on Bihar SIR in Parliament

Congress MP Manickam Tagore (ANI image) NEW DELHI: Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Sunday alleged that the names flagged out of the draft voter list in Bihar are "disproportionately high" in areas considered opposition strongholds, and demanded a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in Bihar. Sharing an X post, Tagore alleged that 15.10 per cent of names have been flagged out in Gopalganj, 12.07 per cent in Purnia, 11.82 per cent in Kishanganj, 10.44 per cent in Madhuband 10.19 per cent in Bhagalpur. He wrote, "Massive voter deletion drive in Bihar? @ECISVEEP's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has flagged 65 lakh voters--8.3% of the total electorate--for possible deletion ahead of the 2025 Assembly elections. #StopVoterDeletion #Bihar. This is not a routine update. Voter flagging is disproportionately high in districts considered opposition strongholds and battlegrounds." "Here's the data Gopalganj -- 15.10% Purnia -- 12.07% Kishanganj -- 11.82% Madhubani -- 10.44% Bhagalpur -- 10.19% These are Critical Risk Tier districts with >10% of voters flagged for deletion," the X post added. He further alleged that the deletion of names was higher in areas with higher populations of marginalised communities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gasa Section: Refrigerators for Sale at Low Costs, See the Price! Refrigerators | Search Ads Search Now Undo "#DemocracyInDanger Most of these areas have high populations of: Dalits, Muslims, Migrants, Urban poor. They are being disproportionately targeted under the guise of "verification." #VoterSuppression," he said. Tagore reiterated RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav's claim that his name was missing from the draft voter list, even after the ECI clarified that Yadav's name is in the list on serial number 416. "Even Bihar Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav found his name deleted in the draft roll! EC later called it a "technical issue." But lakhs of ordinary voters--many unaware--may lose their right to vote silently. This could change results. Many seats in Bihar were won/lost by less than 10,000 votes," the X post read. Demanding a discussion on the SIR exercise in Parliament, he said, "If you delete 10-15% of INDIA alliance voters, is it still a fair election? That's why Opposition MPs are demanding a discussion on SIR in Parliament. Because it's Bihar today, but Assam & Bengal tomorrow. A nationwide pattern of deleting 10-15% voters of INDIA parties is a grave threat to democracy. #ElectoralCleansing." "The EC has opened claims & objections till September 1--but for migrant workers, the elderly, or slum residents, proving eligibility is not easy. The burden is on the poor. The benefit goes to BJP. This isn't voter list revision. It's voter roll rigging. We demand: Immediate halt to SIR, Full disclosure of deletion data, Parliamentary debate on its legality," the X post read. This comes after the ECI released the draft voter list for Bihar on Friday, following a month-long special intensive revision (SIR) process. The EC said the public has one month to submit claims and objections, assuring that "no name will be removed from the draft voter list without a stated reason." "The draft voter list has been released today in Bihar. One-month period for claims and objections begins; draft list shared with political parties. Still a full one month to get names added. No name will be removed from the draft voter list without a stated reason," the Commission stated in a statement on X. According to the Election Commission, out of 7.89 crore registered voters in Bihar, over 7.24 crore electors had submitted their enumeration forms.

Senior Bihar Congress leader Ashok Kumar joins JD(U)

In Bihar, where State Assembly elections are just months away, senior State Congress Party leader Ashok Kumar (Ram) on Sunday (August 3, 2025) joined the ruling party Janata Dal (United), alleging that the party has no 'respect for Dalit'. Mr. Ashok Ram has been a Dalit face of the party for long. Mr. Ashok Ram, who has been the party's six-time MLA and State Legislature Party leader as well, quit the Congress party ahead of party leader Rahul Gandhi's likely visit to the poll-bound State for a padyatra (foot march) in 18 districts from August 10. Mr. Ashok Ram has been winning Assembly elections from the Rosera Assembly constituency in Samastipur district. He has also been a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) and was regarded as a senior leader with a Dalit face in the party for long. He comes from a political background as his father, Baleshwar Ram, too has been a seven-time legislator. While joining the JD(U) at a Milan Samaroh in Patna, Mr. Ashok Ram alleged that 'Congress party has no respect for Dalits and the party has remained as only a B-team of the Rashtriya Janata Dal.' He also said he was 'impressed' with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's work for the Dalits and poor people of the society to 'join JD(U)'. JD(U) working president Sanjay Jha, State party chief Umesh Kushwaha, Ministers in Nitish Kumar's Cabinet Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Sharwan Kumar and Ratnesh Sada too were present during the occasion. Mr. Sada is Dalit leader of JD(U). 'In days to come, several Congress leaders will join JD(U) and the Congress party is going to be non-existence in Bihar,' Mr. Jha claimed during the occasion. 'Ashok Ram's joining us in JD(U) will not only strengthen party's organisation but also party's resolve to '2025, phir se Nitish [2025-once again Nitish],' State JD(U) chief Umesh Kushwaha said. 'Ashok Ram comes from a respected political family, and his coming to our party will definitely be a big boost for the party' Minister for Water Resources and Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said. Meanwhile, State Congress party sources told The Hindu that Mr. Ashok Ram had some differences with party's state in-charge Krishna Allavaru and so he preferred to quit the party. The other senior State Congress leader, on the condition of anonymity though, added, 'Since Ashok Ram wanted party ticket for his son Atirek Kumar for the upcoming Assembly elections and getting assurances for this, he quit the party….many more leaders from other parties would come to our party as well as it happens when elections knock at the door.' 'Ahead of Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Parliament Rahul Gandhi's visit to the State in the second week of this months, Mr. Ram quitting the party to join JD(U) will be a big jolt for the party and in days to come many more party leaders too would follow the same,' said JD(U) leader for Rural Works Department Ashok Choudhary. Mr. Choudhary, earlier, was in the Congress party and president of the BPCC. He joined JD(U) in 2018 and a year later, in June 2019, he became Minister for Building Construction Department in Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Cabinet.
