Malaysia AI chip export curb: Malaysia blocks export and transit of US-made AI chips, targets illegal shipments to China

The country's investment, trade and industry ministry said in a statement that all such movements of US-origin AI chips will now require a strategic trade permit, according to AFP.
"This initiative serves to close regulatory gaps while Malaysia undertakes further review on the inclusion of high-performance AI chips of US origin" into its Strategic Items List, the government said.
The move follows concerns raised by Washington over the transshipment of advanced AI chips via Malaysia, especially amid reports that these chips may have been diverted to Chinese entities despite ongoing US export curbs.
Malaysia serves as a key logistics and export hub for high-end AI chips due to its strategic location and deep integration in global supply chains, experts say.
Last month, Malaysia said it was investigating reports that a Chinese company had used Malaysian data centres equipped with US-made Nvidia chips to circumvent US export controls. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Chinese engineers allegedly transported hard drives containing training data to Malaysia in March to develop AI models locally, before planning to bring the finished models back to China.
The US has tightened restrictions on advanced chip exports to China as part of broader efforts to limit Beijing's access to cutting-edge technologies seen as vital to AI and defence capabilities.
China, in response, has maintained that its firms operate within the bounds of international and domestic laws.
"China is willing to work with countries in the region, including Malaysia, to jointly maintain a free and open international trade order," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at the time.
In Monday's statement, the Malaysian government reiterated its position, saying it "stands firm against any attempt to circumvent export controls or engage in illicit trade activities by any individual or company."

Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind team visits eviction site, sets up shelters
Guwahati: A delegation from Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani faction) visited Goalpara district in lower Assam on Tuesday to assess the aftermath of a recent eviction drive and helped set up temporary shelters for those evicted. The recent eviction drives at Hahilabil (also known as Hasilabil) and Ashudubi in Goalpara's Paikan led to the demolition of approximately 4,000 houses, primarily affecting Bengali-origin migrant Muslim families. The delegation comprised five members, led by the organisation's general secretary, Maulana Hakim Uddin Qasimi. The ASJU provided assistance by establishing temporary shelters, while local organisations and residents offered essential humanitarian support, including food provisions. The delegation engaged with affected families and evaluated the conditions at the demolition. "Whatever has happened in Goalpara was painful. People of our own country are being evicted. Govt first needs to arrange shelter for them, then other decisions may be taken," Hakim Uddin said, noting the deprivation of basic necessities and advised the displaced residents to remain patient. Chinese President Xi Jinping vows greater support for Russia
Chinese President Xi Jinping told Russia's top diplomat on Tuesday (July 15, 2025) that their countries should "strengthen mutual support", state media said, as Foreign Ministers gathered in Beijing for Shanghai Cooperation Organisation talks. Beijing has long sought to present the SCO as a counterweight to Western-led power blocs such as NATO and has pushed for greater collaboration between its 10 members. Top diplomats from the grouping have arrived in Beijing for a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers, including Russia's Sergei Lavrov, India's Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Iran's Abbas Araghchi. Meeting Mr. Lavrov in the Chinese capital, Mr. Xi said the two countries should "strengthen mutual support on multilateral forums", according to state news agency Xinhua. Beijing and Moscow should work to "unite countries of the global South and promote the development of the international order in a more just and reasonable direction", Mr. Xi said, according to Xinhua. Russia's Foreign Ministry said in an earlier statement that "a number of issues of bilateral political contacts at the highest and high levels were discussed". They included preparations for President Vladimir Putin's visit to China to join a SCO summit and World War II anniversary celebrations. Russia's TASS news agency reported that Xi met Lavrov after the Chinese president held a "general meeting" with SCO foreign ministers. Trump's tariff threat The meeting and pledges of support came just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump warned Russia that he will impose "very severe" tariffs against Moscow's remaining trade partners if it doesn't resolve its war in Ukraine within 50 days. China, a diplomatic and economic ally of Moscow, in response said "coercion" by the United States would not resolve the conflict. "China firmly opposes all illegal unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction. There are no winners in a tariff war, and coercion and pressure will not solve problems," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said. Lavrov met Sunday with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi to discuss Ukraine and relations with the United States. The Russian foreign minister arrived in China following a visit to North Korea, where he received assurances of support in its conflict with Ukraine. Beijing claims to be neutral in the war but it has never denounced Russia's more than three-year military campaign, nor called for it to withdraw its troops. Many of Ukraine's allies believe that Beijing has provided support to Moscow. China regularly calls for an end to the fighting, while also accusing Western countries of prolonging the conflict by arming Ukraine. Xi noted Tuesday that "political mutual trust among member states has deepened", according to state broadcaster CCTV. The SCO "has successfully explored a path of regional cooperation that aligns with the trends of the times and meets the needs of all parties, setting a model for a new type of international relations," Xi said.
