Anwar wraps 3-nation tour with major wins on trade, diplomacy and Gaza

RIO DE JANEIRO: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described his official visit to Italy, France and Brazil — which began on July 1 — as having yielded substantial achievements for Malaysia.
He said the visit went beyond investment and trade promotion, focusing also on strengthening government-to-government ties.
"Some critics have remarked, 'we're not asking them to invest, we're buying'. But even when purchasing aircraft, negotiations must ensure the terms benefit our country," he said.
"We set conditions, such as requiring part of the production or operations to be based in Malaysia. This is how we secure national benefit — through strategic leadership."
Anwar said that his meetings with President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Rio de Janeiro were instrumental in articulating Malaysia's stance on the war in West Asia and Israel's atrocities in Gaza.
"Macron issued a statement calling for a ceasefire and immediate humanitarian aid.
"Meloni echoed support for a ceasefire and reaffirmed her backing for a two-state solution recognising Palestine as free, independent and sovereign."
At the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio, Anwar said many leaders supported Malaysia's call for strengthened multilateralism.
"All expressed concern over unilateral actions and trade sanctions, including punitive tariffs. China, India, Brazil and South Africa criticised the legacy of Trump-era trade measures."
Anwar was speaking at the conclusion of his three-nation tour, accompanied by a delegation representing major Malaysian corporations including Petronas, Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Maybank, FGV Holdings, YTL Power and Sunway.
Following his visit to Paris, the prime minister participated in the BRICS Summit in Brazil at the invitation of President Lula.

Care framework to boost women's role in workforce, says Nancy

KUALA LUMPUR: The Care Industry Framework currently being developed by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development will serve as a critical guide in boosting women's participation in the workforce. Its minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said that the initiative reflects a broader commitment to building a robust support ecosystem for women entrepreneurs and leaders — a shared responsibility between the government and private sector. "Female representation in the private sector is still low, and we need to look at supporting women holistically," she said in her keynote address at the 2025 World Women Economic & Business Summit. "This means we must make childcare, ageing parents, healthcare, and flexible work policies integral to economic planning and not side issues," she added. Datuk Seri Nancy said that strengthening the care industry was not about welfare, but about strategic workforce development. "This is not welfare — it is a workforce strategy," she said, calling on corporate Malaysia to partner with the government in building a care infrastructure that enables women to thrive at work and at home. She also said the ministry is working with various partners to expand the number of childcare centres nationwide and is actively encouraging employers to adopt family-friendly practices, including flexible work arrangements. "We will use digital technology to our advantage," she noted, emphasising that digital tools can help scale access to care solutions while reducing the burden on women, who often shoulder disproportionate caregiving responsibilities. Nancy also acknowledged that while Malaysian women make up a significant proportion of the tertiary-educated population, their representation in senior management and decision-making roles remains uneven. "Women make up more than 50 per cent of those who pursue higher education, yet they still represent only 34 per cent of senior managers in Southeast Asia," she said, citing data from the World Economic Forum and McKinsey. She added that during crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic, women are often the first to suffer and the last to recover facing job losses, educational setbacks, and increased unpaid care responsibilities. "These are not just gender issues — they are economic vulnerabilities," she said. "The future is not something we wait for — it is something we build," said Nancy. "And if we want a future that is equitable, resilient, and innovative, then women must be at the centre of it. Not as beneficiaries of change, but as architects of it."

Rubio stays mum on Asean talks, flashes thumbs-up to press

KUALA LUMPUR: United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio declined to comment on the outcome of the Asean Post Ministerial Meeting today, offering only a smile and a thumbs-up to reporters. Rubio had arrived earlier at the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting, where he was welcomed by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and hold talks with Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during his visit. The brief stop in Kuala Lumpur marks Rubio's first trip to Asia as President Donald Trump's National Security Adviser. The visit is to focus on US policy in Asia, following months of Washington's attention on the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said that in his first trip to Asia, Rubio would focus on reaffirming the United States' commitment to advancing a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region. Earlier this week, Trump announced a 25 per cent import duty on Malaysian goods starting Aug 1, citing the need to protect US industries from unfair trade practices.

Cooperatives key to improving living standards in Malaysia, says PM

KUALA LUMPUR: The cooperative institution serves as a crucial tool in enhancing the living standards of Malaysians, particularly those in the B40 income group, micro-entrepreneurs, and local communities, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Speaking at the official opening of Wisma Co-Opbank Pertama (CBP), Anwar emphasised that cooperatives extend beyond financial services, acting as a platform for community empowerment in line with the Malaysia MADANI vision. His speech was delivered by Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick. 'The MADANI government will continue to support and strengthen the cooperative sector as one of the engines of economic growth for the rakyat,' Anwar stated. Data from the Malaysia Co-operative Societies Commission revealed that over 16,000 cooperatives were registered as of December 2024, with membership exceeding 7.2 million. Anwar commended CBP for its strong financial performance, recording a profit of RM124.29 million for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2024, and total assets reaching RM12.84 billion. He noted that CBP embodies the economic resilience of the people, grounded in syariah principles and driven by values of social justice. 'I hope CBP's accomplishments will continue to be carried forward by the cooperative movement in Malaysia, ultimately contributing to the nation's economic well-being,' he added. The newly launched Wisma CBP, a 13-storey building in Kampung Baru, marks the institution's 75th anniversary and symbolises its leadership in modern, inclusive cooperative banking. Anwar expressed confidence that the facility would encourage greater community participation in the cooperative sector, further boosting Malaysia's socioeconomic progress. – Bernama
