Hereford hospice plans Ludlow furniture warehouse to boost income

BBC News29-03-2025
A hospice being able to open a furniture donation warehouse is vital to help it keep caring for people needing end-of-life care, its boss says.An application has been submitted to Shropshire Council by St Michael's Hospice, based in Hereford, to use a manufacturing unit in Ludlow, Shropshire, for the scheme.Under the plans, the site on Orleton Road would be used to take in donations of furniture and sell them alongside books, clothing and bric-a-brac."Approval of this application is essential for the hospice to grow its income to support the increasing demand and costs of their services," chief executive Matt Fellows said.
In a letter supporting the plans, he added St Michael's was under increasing pressures from inflation and rising costs and needed the base in Ludlow to allow it to answer rising demand for its help. The number of patients the hospice cares for has risen from 1,070 in 2016-17 to 2,353 in 2023-24.
Requests for the hospice's counselling and therapy services had also increased, especially since the Covid pandemic, Mr Fellows added. The hospice has 300 staff and 800 volunteers and the new scheme would create six full-time and four part-time jobs, according to the application.St Michael's had had a lot of requests to collect unwanted furniture from the Ludlow area and spent several years searching for a site for a new warehouse, a spokesperson said."Each year our shops prevent 500 tonnes of items going to landfill," they added.About 200 people were expected to bring in donations each week, if the plans were approved, they said. The council is due to take a decision on the application at a future date.

New pass gives app users a festive edge and a tidy delivery deal CHECK IT OUT Top UK supermarket chain introduces new loyalty scheme – and it has a major delivery perk Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) WAITROSE has launched a new subscription service aimed at online grocery shoppers, giving customers the chance to save money on delivery fees. The scheme, called the Waitrose Delivery Pass, is now available across the UK after a successful trial. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 With the new scheme, a one-month pass will cost £8, a six-month pass is £45, and a 12-month pass comes in at £85 Credit: Getty 3 The move comes as supermarkets compete to offer better value and convenience to customers who increasingly rely on home delivery. It allows shoppers to pay a fixed amount upfront for deliveries, either monthly, six-monthly, or annually, through the Waitrose website or app. Without a pass, delivery slots cost between £2 and £4 each. But with the new scheme, a one-month pass will cost £8, a six-month pass is £45, and a 12-month pass comes in at £85. Waitrose says the annual plan could save customers up to £123 a year if they order once a week using a £4 slot. Customers who sign up will also get early access to Christmas delivery slots – which become available in September – giving them a head start on booking during the busy festive season. Laura Burbedge, Waitrose director of online, said: 'We're investing in our online business to continuously improve it, giving our customers even greater value and the best possible experience. 'Thousands of customers signed up for Delivery Passes through our trial, so we expect to see strong demand across the UK as we roll it out.' The move comes as supermarkets compete to offer better value and convenience to customers who increasingly rely on home delivery. The COVID-19 pandemic shifted shopping habits, and while many people have returned to stores, online grocery shopping remains popular, particularly among busy families and older shoppers. Waitrose said the pass is part of wider investment in its digital offering, including improved website functionality, app updates, and more delivery slots. It's also increasing capacity in some areas to meet demand, particularly in urban locations. Subscriptions have become a growing trend in the grocery world, helping shoppers save while locking in customer loyalty. Tesco's Delivery Saver lets customers choose from midweek or anytime plans starting from £2.49 a month. Sainsbury's offers its Delivery Pass from as little as £10 for three months, covering unlimited deliveries for orders over £40. Other retailers outside traditional supermarkets have joined in too. Iceland introduced a Bonus Card Savings scheme offering exclusive delivery slots and offers to regular shoppers. Meanwhile, Amazon Fresh continues to offer free grocery deliveries to Prime members in selected postcodes, with no extra charge beyond the Prime membership fee. Waitrose says more updates to its online shopping experience will be announced in the coming months.

Wales' employment rate is up after fall in sickness levels

Wales has posted a positive set of job and unemployment figures for the last quarter but still lags behind much of the UK. The latest Office of National Statistics employment figures for March to May have been released The country saw its employment rate hit 72.6% - which is up 2.2 percentage points on the previous quarter and up 3.6 percentage points on the year. But it remains below the UK average of 75.2%.- with only the North East, Yorkshire and Humber, and Northern Ireland with a lower figure. Meanwhile the unemployment rate in Wales was 4.4%. This is down 0.4 percentage points on the quarter and up 0.9 percentage points on the year. Wales performs well compared to the overall UK, where the unemployment rate was 4.7%, which was up on the year and the last quarter. In addition there was positive news over economic inactivity in the working age population. These figures include full-time carers or students, and people who are on long-term sick or have taken early retirement. In the years prior to the pandemic it had fallen from over 24% to 21.8% after steady progress to tackle the problem but it spiked during and after Covid hit. This saw it go over 28% in 2024, the worst rate of all UK nations and regions. But the last 12 months has seen the rate fall. In the last quarter the economic inactivity rate in Wales was 23.9%. This is down 2.1 percentage points on the quarter and down 4.5 percentage points on the year. The UK economic inactivity rate remains lower at 21.0%. However Wales has now moved off the bottom and ahead of the North East, Yorkshire and Humber, and Northern Ireland.

Plans for dozens of homes beside canal in Llanymynech

Dozens of new homes could be built in a village near Oswestry under newly-revealed plans. Bradford Rural Estates has revealed the plans for 48 homes on agricultural land in Llanymynech, in the north east of the village beyond Barley Meadows, which in turn lies off Station Road. The site is between an old coal yard, the Montgomery Canal, and the existing village. It was put forward for development through the council's call for sites to be developed as part of the current review of Shropshire's Local Plan. The application submitted this month is an outline application indicating the site would accommodate 48 properties, which is fewer than the 60 which had been put forward during a pre-application consultation in the village. Should the plan be backed by Shropshire Council, the developers would then need to come back with detailed proposals for the site. A planning statement put forward with the plans by agent Berrys reads: "The masterplan proposal has been developed significantly following the pre application submission. "At the time of the pre-application submission a layout was provided indicating a development of up to 60 dwellings. "Following feedback received from Council officers at the pre-application stage and having regard to the technical constraints and policy requirements of the site, a revised indicative layout has been provided as part of this application submission which illustrates the provision of 48 dwellings." The planning statement also notes the current lack of an updated Local Plan in Shropshire after a review by Government inspectors led to the current plan being withdrawn this week, but says the proposal fits national planning policies. A design and access statement also provided adds: "We envisage that the proposed development will be no higher than two storeys to match the scale of the surrounding residential developments." The developers also say they would provide a play area for children aged four to eight. The statement adds that hedgerows and trees around the site are intended to be kept where possible, and replace those that are lost. An indicative layout plan provided with the application shows that it would connect to the existing cul-de-sac at Barley Meadows, and would be separated from the canal by at least 10 metres to allow for the legal boundaries of a sewage pipe which runs alongside the waterway. The plans also include a strip of land connecting the planned homes with the nearby "recreation areas" - which include the village hall, playground and bowling club, which are all nearby. The application is due to be decided by October 6.
