THEY have long been associated with gut-busting Americans who think nothing of cramming calorie-packed meals into their supersized stomachs.
But competitive eating contests are now going mainstream in the UK, with enterprising starved restaurants serving them up to attract punters.

As the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, dozens of outlets are now offering a variety of food challenges, from finishing the biggest steak to gobbling up a mountain of burgers.
The trend, which started with Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest in the States in 1972, is now popular with social media influencers.
But how would the average Brit fare taking on the gargantuan meals?
Four of our brave writers braced their stomachs to find out.

It's big enough to feed someone for ten days.
Staring at the humongous pizza, which I must eat all in one go, I realise that a single slice is bigger than my head.
I am shocked by the sheer weight of cheese and crust.
After 25 minutes, I have consumed 60 per cent of the pizza, but I am shaking with nausea and I am defeated, which means I have to pay my full bill, £93.99.
Boss Ilhan said: 'It's popular. The rapper 50 Cent was here and we delivered one to Bryan Adams after his show in Newcastle. We used to challenge people to do it in 20 minutes but it was too difficult.'

Around 200 people have tried the Big 60 Challenge in the past decade but just a handful polished it off in under 60 minutes.
As the medium rare slab was placed in front of me, I felt confident.
But 45 minutes later, I threw in the towel with eight ounces left.
Co-owner Tahir Bhatti said: 'Our best time was under 20 minutes. He was an average-looking guy, but the mad thing is his wife told us he'd had a bucket of KFC on the way.'

Competitors have less than 12 minutes to finish the £18 meal and get their money back at the Greasy Pig.
The current best time is 3.27 minutes.
I managed four slices of bacon, three hash browns, two half slices of bread, half a sausage, a scoop of beans and a couple of mushrooms.
Boss Mitz Bala said: 'It causes a stir on social media, it attracts influencers with huge followings.'

I'm a glutton, so was looking forward to taking on Red Dog Saloon's burger-eating challenge.

But then I found out I would need to eat 13 6oz whoppers in ten minutes to claim £5,000, and my stomach began to shrivel.
Professional scoffer Leah Shutkever ate 12 and it's her record you have to beat.
My mood darkened as I was served a mountain of meat, cheese, onion and suffocating brioche bun.
Halfway through the fourth, I surrendered. I ate three and a half.
Tourists began to film me on their phones through the window of the Soho branch.

They have their own YouTube channel and in an episode this week Zoe was cooking up one of her family favourites, a viral recipe for Cajun chicken pasta. It only has seven core ingredients, takes 25 minutes to cook and costs less than £2 per portion - ideal for such a big brood. The vlog post reads: "It's perfect for busy parents, large families, or anyone looking for easy, tasty dinner ideas that kids and adults will love." Zoe was making the meal for four people in the afternoon and then another eight people later, for 12 of her 14-strong family. For her dozen, she cubes 12 chicken breasts and puts them in a bowl with 12 tablespoons of Cajun spice, and some oil to coat. She then fries the chicken in a pan until it's browned then adds around six garlic gloves - or six teaspoons of lazy garlic, six tablespoons of garlic puree and another six tablespoons of Cajun spice. Then Zoe adds 900ml of veg stock and 1,200ml of double cream to the chicken mix and cooks until the meat is cooked and the sauce thickens. Zoe then mixes the chicken mix and pasta together to complete the simple, family meal. The Moray mum said: "It's super yummy, it's really nice. It's creamy Cajun chicken pasta - try it for sure." I am a mum of 12, our life is crazy but I would have another baby tomorrow Zoe suggests leaving out a bit of spice if your kids don't like their food with too much kick and adding a bit of fresh parsley to finish off. Four people have now died in recent months at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in San Antonio on the party island which is popular with British youngsters for its music and parties A British teenager is the fourth person in recent months to have fallen at a 'death hotel' in Ibiza. Ibiza Rocks Hotel is a popular location in San Antonio on the party island especially for British tourists who flock there for its live music poolside which attracts top artists and DJs. But at the same time it is now becoming infamous and has been dubbed the 'death hotel' locally following the number of tourists now who have died at the hotel. For British youngsters heading over to the Spanish island for a good time, the hotel has a lot of attractions with the large pool, sun terraces, bars and entertainment. Tourists can be seen dancing on balconies with drinks and looking down at the music stage below. Tragically a 19-year-old from the UK has become the latest to die at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel after falling from a balcony. Two ambulances were sent to the scene but paramedics say there was nothing they could do to save him. The tragedy, which is being investigated by police, occurred just after midnight. He has not yet been named but is known to have fallen from the third floor of the hotel onto an outside part of the complex and a police investigation is underway. It is not yet clear if the teenage Brit was holidaying with friends or family and whether he fell from his room or another part of the hotel. The Ibiza Rocks hotel has now cancelled events while an investigation is underway. A statement read: 'We are deeply shocked and devastated by the recent incidents that have tragically occurred. Our priority is to support those affected and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time and to fully assist the authorities with their investigations. 'The safety and wellbeing of our guests has and always will remain our highest priority. Given the seriousness of the situation and out of respect for those involved we believe it is right to pause our advertised events programme at this time. All customers will be informed directly via email.' It means that a daytime set by Dizzee Rascal and Songer intended to celebrate 20 years of Ibiza Rocks will not go ahead on July 23. Last year local media reported how hundreds of locals in Sant Antonio presented a complaint to the local government asking for checks to take place on the hotel as they alleged that it was not meeting standards such as over security, noise or sale of alcohol. A spokesperson for residents said that they had been complaining since 2008, reported Cadena Ser. The hotel is the same as where Evan Thomson, 26, from Aberdeen, died on July 7 while on holiday with pals celebrating his birthday. Paramedics were called to the scene but could do nothing to save him. His mum Lel Kellighan revealed the news on social media a few days after her son died, saying: 'I'm absolutely heartbroken to write and tell you all, earlier this week my son Evan was in a tragic accident whilst on holiday with his friends in Ibiza and sadly passed away. 'We are all absolutely broken. Please allow us some time.' In the days after Evan's death his loved ones raised questions about safety and blasted the hotel where he died over the way the situation was handled. Evan's sister Teila said: 'Ibiza is known for its partying and it just stuns me that they don't have higher safety precautions. Pray nobody else suffers. And, once it did happen, the hotel's response was just completely heartbreaking; almost as if it never happened. I pray no other family has to go through this." Friend Blair Robertson, 25, who had been with Evan before he died, said: 'Security took us away to front desk. Paramedics didn't arrive for about 30 minutes. Forensic officers didn't speak English. We were just standing there, not knowing what was going on. Reception gave us false hope." Remi Duncan, 23, said: 'It was disgusting. There was minimal respect for the situation, considering the music went back on soon after Evan had died. It puts a pit in your stomach.' In a statement after Evan died, the hotel said: 'This is a truly tragic and extremely sad situation. Our senior management team onsite did everything possible to help the police with their investigation into events leading up to Evan's death, and to provide constant support from our customer services manager to Evan's friends.' On April 30, a 33-year-old British woman died at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel. Local police and paramedics rushed to the hotel, situated just metres from one of the world 's most famous sunsets, after the alarm was raised around 6.30pm on April 30. Emergency responders confirmed when they arrived the holidaymaker had gone into cardiac arrest and spent around 40 minutes practicing CPR on her to try to revive her. She was declared dead at the scene after efforts to save her life proved sources said at the time there was nothing pointing to the death being suspicions and she is understood to have had a pre-existing heart condition. On April 27, a 19-year-old Italian tourist of Turkish origin plunged to her death from the fourth-floor at the same hotel. She had flown to the island the previous day and gone out partying. She was said at the time to have tried to been trying to reach her room via a balcony from a shared area of the hotel after realising she didn't have her key card when she lost her footing and fell. Her lifeless body was discovered around 9am. Hotel group said after the two deaths in April: 'In light of the tragic events that occurred this week, due to causes beyond our control, IRG (Ibiza Rocks Group) expresses its dismay and extends its utmost support to the families of the victims, and thanks everyone for respecting their privacy in the face of incalculable pain.' The hotel boasts on its website: 'A stay with us is anything but ordinary' It says in a website description: 'Perfectly located on Ibiza's west coast, just metres from the world's most famous sunset, our unique resort style hotel features over 360 rooms circled around our iconic open-air event venue. With recently upgraded public spaces, comprehensive facilities, and an extensive selection of food and drink options, a stay with us is anything but ordinary.' The Mirror has contacted Ibiza Rocks Hotel for comment.

In a post from Hannah's official account on Instagram, Nat said: "It is with the heaviest heart that I have to share the news with you all, of the passing of Hannah's beloved husband Ian, on Thursday July 17, 2025. "Ian was tragically killed in a work accident. "Hannah and Ian's families appreciate you all and your support during this tragedy. "We are continuing to surround them with love and ask you for your thoughts and prayers."
