A) Demand environment has so far not shown a broad-based pickup. Valuations are at or above fair zone in many sectors, which leads to volatility on slight deviation from expected earnings trajectory.
Additionally, IPO market has a strong line up which could also limit a stark rally in the market. Considering the impact of ongoing global dynamics on interest rates, trajectory of FII flows is hard to predict in the medium term. Flows have been reasonable, supported largely by the DIIs.
Interest rate cuts, reasonable spread of monsoon, low base of FY25 & income tax rebates are likely to support earnings growth through the year.
Live Events
Though potential returns over the medium term could be lower than historic periods, they are likely to remain reasonable.
Q) IPOs have picked up recently, but EY report highlighted that Indian IPO activity in the first half of 2025 recorded 108 deals raising US$4.6b, demonstrating market resilience despite a 30% decline in transactions.
A) In many cases, IPOs are launched at the most favorable part of the business cycle and launched at full valuation.
Though there is reasonable supply awaiting to hit the markets, median stock returns of recent IPOs are muted which clearly shows a moderation in investor interest. We generally don't participate in IPOs as odds are skewed in favor of the seller.
Q) What is the initial sense you are picking up from the June quarter results, which have started to come out?
A) The result reason is progressing in line with expectation. Demand environment is not showing a stark change from the muted trend in prior quarters. Input cost moderation is helping profitability in many sectors.
Among major sectors, asset quality trends remain reasonable in banks. Though deal wins remain reasonable and environment is stable, IT continues to witness moderate demand environment.
Autos have seen muted domestic volume growth, partly due to inventory correction in the channel.
Q) Is the current equity market rally largely liquidity-driven, or are there sufficient earnings fundamentals to back the optimism?
A) India is likely to see a reasonable market performance backed by the domestic flows and earnings recovery. Muted earnings in the recent year have created a low base for earnings.
The recent interest rate cuts, above average monsoon and moderate inflation are likely to support the earnings trajectory through the year.
Q) SIPs crossed Rs27K – what does it talk about the retail investor behaviour change?
A) Share of SIP in overall AUM has increased from 10.5% in FY19 to 20.4 % of Mutual Fund AUM as of FY25. Large part of investors has understood the importance of long-term orientation.
Recent volatility has clearly given an indication that markets aren't always linear. Considering the low share of equity in household financial savings, the trend can sustain for the long term.
Q) Where are the pockets of opportunities coming from?
A) Private Sector Banks & Insurance offers reasonable value at the current juncture. Though banks could see margin pressure in the near term, favorable credit environment and a potential pick up in credit growth can support banks in the current year.
Some of the insurance companies which are facing near term transient issues are also offering good value. IT sector has the potential to positively surprise on earnings as enterprises are likely to accelerate IT spending with the increased proliferation of new technologies like AI.
As new technologies proliferate, IT service companies are likely to benefit from implementation and integration related work.
Q) How should one play the small & midcap space?
A) As flows in the recent times are largely contributed by retail investors and DIIs, few segments within small & mid cap space are trading at extreme valuation.
Strategies which are cognizant of valuation and focused on bottom-up analysis are likely to outperform in the current environment.

GST mop-up resists geopolitical turmoil, climbs 7.5% in July

Goods and services tax ( GST ) collections rose 7.5% in July to Rs 1.95 lakh crore from a year earlier, despite prevailing geopolitical tension and its spillover on consumer sentiment, official data released on Friday revealed. In June, the mop-up was Rs 1.84 lakh crore. Experts said that the overall trend shows a stable consumption pattern as gross collections from April to July stood at Rs 8.18 lakh crore, marking a growth of 10.7% from the year earlier. 'Looking at the year-to-date figures, the robust GST collections confirm that the Indian economy is on a consistent growth trajectory, which is a testament to its resilience,' said Saurabh Agarwal, tax partner, EY India. Gross domestic revenue grew 6.7% to Rs 1.43 lakh crore, while tax from imports rose 9.5% to Rs 52,712 crore. Manufacturing activity in July remained resilient despite global challenges, with output rising to a 16-month high of 59.1, supporting the overall economic momentum. Total refunds for the month stood at Rs 27,147 crore, up 66.8% against the same month last year. 'GST refunds picking up, not just for exports but also for domestic supplies, reflects maturity of the GST regime,' said Abhishek Jain, indirect tax head and partner, KPMG. 'Higher refunds on domestic supplies could be from excess tax payments, inverted duty structures, and other adjustments. The increased refunds should aid cash flows for businesses.' Collections, net of refunds, stood at Rs 1.69 lakh crore, marking 1.7% year-on-year growth. States continued to show a mixed trend. 'The growth in state revenues amongst large producing and consuming states has been very low, ranging from 2% (Delhi), 3% (Gujarat), 4% (Rajasthan), 6% (Maharashtra), 7% (Karnataka) to 8% (Tamil Nadu),' said MS Mani, tax partner, Deloitte. Among the larger states, West Bengal (12%), Andhra Pradesh (14%) and Madhya Pradesh (18%), posted double digit growth in collections.

The Centre's goal has been to create global champions and that it is on track, the official said, brushing aside criticism that many small auto component makers are not meeting scheme goals, or are completely excluded from it. Tata Motors , Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Auto , Ola Electric and TVS Motor Co are among the major companies that have raised claims under the scheme till now. "Budgetary fund allocation for current fiscal is expected to be exhausted in a few trend suggests there will be much higher disbursements in next two years," another senior official told ET. Budget 2025-26 earmarked ₹2,818.85 crore for disbursal under this scheme. Five automobile companies have raised claims totalling more than ₹2,000 crore for achieving the scheme's goals in FY25. Officials said ₹322 crore have been released so far for FY24. While auto companies are faring well, there are concerns about component makers not meeting goals.

Trump's tariff tsunami hits more foreign shores

WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump 's latest wave of tariffs on exports from dozens of trading partners sent global stock markets tumbling on Friday and countries and companies scrambling to seek ways to strike better deals. As Trump presses ahead with plans to reorder the global economy with the highest tariff rates since the early 1930s, Switzerland, "stunned" by 39% tariffs, sought more talks. Tips and Tricks Undo The presidential order listed higher import duty rates of 10% to 41% starting in a week's time for 69 trading partners, taking the U.S. effective tariff rate to about 18%, from 2.3% last year, according to analysts at Capital Economics . Trump's new tariffs have created yet more uncertainty, with many details unclear. They are set to take effect on Aug 7 at 0401 GMT, a White House official said. Live Events The European Union , which struck a framework deal with Trump on Sunday, is still awaiting more Trump orders to deliver on agreed carve-outs, including on cars and aircraft, EU officials said, saying the latest executive orders did not cover that. Also, it is unclear how the administration intends to define and police the transshipment restrictions, which threaten 40% levies on any exporter deemed to have tried to mask goods from a higher-tariffed originator, such as China, as their own product. The new tariffs will kick in at what has become a perilous moment for the U.S. economy, with U.S. data on Friday showing employment growth was weaker than thought previously. Trump's tariff rollout also comes amid evidence they have begun driving up prices. U.S. Commerce Department data released Thursday showed prices for home furnishings and durable household equipment jumped 1.3% in June, the biggest gain since March 2022. NO WINNERS? Countries hit with hefty tariffs said they will seek to negotiate with the U.S. in hopes of getting a lower rate. Switzerland said it would push for a "negotiated solution" with the U.S. "It's a massive shock for the export industry and for the whole country. We are really stunned," said Jean-Philippe Kohl, deputy director of Swissmem, representing Switzerland's mechanical and electrical engineering industries. South Africa's Trade Minister Parks Tau said he was seeking "real, practical interventions" to defend jobs and the economy against the 30% U.S. tariff it faces. Southeast Asian countries, however, breathed a sigh of relief after the U.S. tariffs on their exports that were lower than threatened and levelled the playing field with a rate of about 19% across the region's biggest economies.
