Microsoft reveals which jobs are most at risk from AI, and which are safe
Microsoft researchers have released a study identifying which occupations are most and least susceptible to being replaced by generative AI tools. The study, which is yet to be peer-reviewed, analysed how frequently AI is used in various jobs and how successfully it performs within those roles.
According to the research, the team evaluated a dataset comprising 200,000 anonymised and privacy-scrubbed user interactions with Microsoft Bing Copilot. They used this data to generate an "AI applicability score" for different occupations, gauging how effectively AI is already being used and the likelihood of its future integration.
Desk jobs face higher AI applicability
The study found that jobs most vulnerable to automation involve tasks such as providing information and assistance, writing, teaching, and advising.
Occupations in this category include translators, historians, sales representatives, writers, authors, and customer service representatives.
In contrast, jobs with the lowest AI applicability scores tend to involve manual labour and physical tasks. These include heavy machinery and motorboat operators, housekeepers, roofers, massage therapists, and dishwashers.
As reported by Futurism, the researchers noted that lower-paying, labour-intensive occupations are significantly less likely to be automated when compared to those involving tasks that AI chatbots and large language models are capable of performing.

AI's role in current work activities
Despite the high applicability scores in certain job categories, the researchers clarified that AI is not yet performing all work activities associated with any one occupation. According to Futurism, they stated that "our data do not indicate that AI is performing all of the work activities of any one occupation."
They further acknowledged that variability in how people use AI tools complicates the results.
"Different people use different LLMs for different purposes," the researchers explained, adding that this could lead to inconsistencies in how certain roles—such as historians, political scientists, and authors—are represented in the dataset.
Cautions on interpretation and economic implications
The Microsoft team advised caution when interpreting the potential economic impacts of AI on employment. As quoted by Futurism, they stated, "This would be a mistake, as our data do not include the downstream business impacts of new technology, which are very hard to predict and often counterintuitive."
They referenced the example of ATMs, which automated a key function of bank tellers but ultimately contributed to an increase in teller employment, as banks were able to open more branches.

Executives' perspectives on AI-driven job cuts
Industry leaders have also expressed their views on AI's impact on jobs. According to Futurism, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently stated that some job categories could be "just like totally, totally gone," pointing to customer support roles as one example.
Elijah Clark, a CEO who advises businesses on AI, confirmed the trend, telling Futurism, "I've laid off employees myself because of AI," adding that CEOs are "extremely excited about the opportunities that AI brings."
Evolving technology and future job markets
The researchers concluded that the results represent only a "snapshot in time," and future developments in AI technology may alter the landscape further. As reported by Futurism, they stated, "Modernizing our understanding of workplace activities will be crucial as generative AI continues to change how work is done."

Tirupati temple board's AI-based plan for faster darshan at Tirumala faces backlash

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD)'s push to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to reduce darshan waiting times at the Tirumala temple has sparked a public debate, with former TTD officials questioning both its intent and its recent board meeting, TTD had announced plans to use advanced AI technology to reduce waiting times for darshan, in collaboration with tech majors like Google and the larger interests of the common devotees who are facing long waiting hours in queue lines and Vaikuntham complexes in Tirumala to have darshan of Sri Venkateswara Swamy, the TTD Board has decided to provide darshan to the devotees within the stipulated time using advanced AI technology in collaboration with Google, TCS and other organizations free of cost," the TTD Chairman BR Naiu had said in the board meeting. YSR Congress Party State Spokesperson and former Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Chairman Bhumana Karunakar Reddy has dismissed current TTD Chairman BR Naidu's claims on using AI to streamline darshan at Tirumala as "misleading and mere publicity."Reddy alleged that the allocation of guesthouses on the Tirumala hills was made to representatives from Google and TCS, firms reportedly offering AI solutions free of cost to the temple body. He questioned the lack of visible outcomes despite the TTD Chairman discussing AI implementation for the past nine the chorus of criticism, former Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh and ex-TTD Executive Officer, LV Subramanyam, also expressed from Tirumala on Sunday, he was quoted as saying, 'It is impossible to reduce the darshan waiting time below three hours through AI, as there are several limitations at the temple. Instead, the TTD should focus on improving pilgrim amenities in the hill town.'- EndsMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Andhra Pradesh

GitHub CEO warns developers to embrace AI or quit coding

GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke has issued a clear warning to software engineers, learn to work with AI or be prepared to exit the field. In a blog post titled "Developers, Reinvented," Dohmke said AI is already changing how software is built, and the change is so deep that the very role of a developer is being comments were based on conversations with 22 developers who are already heavily using AI in their work. According to him, their experiences prove that AI is no longer a distant idea but a day-to-day reality. Many of these developers started out sceptical of AI tools like GitHub Copilot, but over time, they began to rely on them as an integral part of their explained that these developers have evolved from traditional coders into what he called 'code enablers' or 'creative directors of code.' Instead of spending all their time typing out code, they now guide AI systems on what to build, set the context for the work, and carefully review the output to ensure it meets requirements. The change, he said, is less about doing less work and more about doing different work. According to him, adopting AI tools early can give developers an advantage rather than making them redundant. With AI, tasks that used to be too complex or time-consuming, such as large-scale code restructuring or coordinating multiple AI agents to build new features, are now becoming possible. Developers who understand how to integrate AI into these processes can take on more ambitious projects than Dohmke also cautioned that this transformation brings a challenge. Those who do not adapt risk being left behind. He said the pace of change is fast, and some developers estimate that AI could write up to 90 per cent of all code within the next two to five years. If that happens, the most valued skills will no longer be purely about writing code but will include system architecture, understanding how AI works, managing AI-generated tasks, and ensuring quality is not the first time the tech industry has sent such a message. Julia Liuson, a senior executive at Microsoft, which is GitHub's parent company, recently told employees that 'using AI is no longer optional.' While some have criticised this approach as a scare tactic to push adoption, it shows the urgency with which many tech leaders view the admitted that not everyone in the profession may find this change appealing. For some, the idea of managing AI systems instead of personally crafting code might feel less satisfying. But he argued that, in a way, developers have always been working at some level of abstraction using programming languages to tell computers what to do. The new model simply raises that level, with developers now instructing AI agents instead of directly controlling every also highlighted that this change should not be seen as reducing the worth of a developer's work. Instead, it expands what's possible. By using AI as a collaborator, developers can move faster, aim higher, and tackle challenges that once seemed impossible.- Ends

SoftBank builds Nvidia, TSMC stakes under Masayoshi Son's focus on AI gear

Agencies SoftBank Group Corp. is building up stakes in Nvidia Corp. and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the latest reflection of Masayoshi Son's focus on the tools and hardware underpinning artificial intelligence. The Japanese technology investor raised its stake in Nvidia to about $3 billion by the end of March, up from $1 billion in the prior quarter, according to regulatory filings. It bought around $330 million worth of TSMC shares and $170 million in Oracle Corp., they show. That's while SoftBank's signature Vision Fund has monetized almost $2 billion of public and private assets in the first half of 2025, according to a person familiar with the fund's activities. The Vision Fund prioritizes its returns on investment and there is no particular pressure from SoftBank to monetize its assets, said the person, who asked not to be named discussing private information. A representative of SoftBank declined to comment. At the heart of SoftBank's AI ambitions is chip designer Arm Holdings Plc. Son is gradually building a portfolio around the Cambridge, UK-based company with key industry players, seeking to catch up after largely missing a historic rally that's made Nvidia into a $4 trillion behemoth and boosted its contract chipmaker TSMC near a $1 trillion value. 'Nvidia is the picks and shovels for the gold rush of AI,' said Ben Narasin, founder and general partner of Tenacity Venture Capital, referring to a concerted effort by the world's largest technology companies to spend hundreds of billions of dollars to get ahead. SoftBank's purchase of the US company's stock may buy more influence and access to Nvidia's most sought-after chips, he said. 'Maybe he gets to skip the line.'SoftBank, which reports quarterly earnings Thursday, should've benefited from that bet on Nvidia — at least on paper. Nvidia has gained around 90% in market value since hitting a year's low around early April, while TSMC has climbed over 40%.That's helping to make up for missing out on much of Nvidia's post-ChatGPT rally — one of the biggest of all time. SoftBank, which was early to start betting on betting on AI long before OpenAI's seminal chatbot, parted with a 4.9% stake in Nvidia in early 2019 that would be worth more than $200 billion today. Crippling losses at the Vision Fund also hampered SoftBank's ability to be an early investor in generative AI. The company's attempts to buy back some Nvidia shares, alongside those of proxy TSMC, would help Son regain access to some of the most lucrative parts of the semiconductor supply chain. The 67-year-old SoftBank founder now seeks to play a more central role in the spread of AI through sweeping partnerships. These include SoftBank's $500 billion Stargate data center foray with OpenAI, Oracle and Abu Dhabi-backed investment fund MGX. Son is also courting TSMC and others about taking part in a $1 trillion AI manufacturing hub in Arm's intellectual property is used to power the majority of mobile chips and is increasingly used in server chips, SoftBank could carve out a unique position without being a manufacturer itself, according to Richard Kaye, co-head of Japan equity strategy at Comgest Asset Management and a long-time SoftBank investor.'I think he sees himself as the natural provider of AI semiconductor technology,' he said. 'What Son really wants to do is capture the upstream and the downstream of everything.'Investors have cheered Son's audacious plans, while analysts say they expect SoftBank to report a swing back to a net income in the June quarter. SoftBank shares marked a record high last month. SoftBank's planned $6.5 billion deal to acquire US chip firm Ampere Computing LLC and another $30 billion investment in OpenAI are further encouraging investors who see the stock as a way to ride the US startup's however, remains dissatisfied, according to people close to the billionaire. Son sees the big projects in the US as having the potential to help SoftBank leapfrog the current leaders in AI to become a trillion-dollar or bigger company, they stock continues to trade at a roughly estimated 40% discount to SoftBank's total assets — which includes a roughly 90% stake in the $148 billion-valued Arm. SoftBank's market capitalization stands at around $119 billion, a fraction of Nvidia's $4.4 trillion valuation and that of other tech companies most closely associated with AI progress. Son, who in the past has seen Washington hamper or derail merger plans like the union of Arm and Nvidia, seeks to leverage his relationship with Donald Trump and is arranging frequent meetings with White House officials. Those efforts are now critical as AI and semiconductors become geopolitical flash points. SoftBank's plan to buy Ampere is facing a probe by the Federal Trade Commission. Attention at its June quarter earnings will be on what other assets SoftBank might sell down to help it secure the liquidity it needs to double down on hardware investments. The Japanese company has so far raised around $4.8 billion through a sale of some of its T-Mobile share holding in June. Its Chief Financial Officer Yoshimitsu Goto has cited the company's end-March net asset value of ¥25.7 trillion ($175 billion), saying the company has ample capital to cover its funding the business year ended March, the Vision Fund's exits included DoorDash Inc. and View Inc., as well as cloud security company Wiz Inc. and enterprise software startup Peak, even as SoftBank bought up the stakes in Nvidia, TSMC and Oracle. 'We're after AI using an array of startups and group companies,' Son told shareholders in June. 'We want to become the organizer of the No. 1 platformer in the artificial super intelligence era.'
