Trump on Global Coptic Day: Treasured traditions of Coptic community serve as light for Americans

Watani09-06-2025

US President Donald Trump posted on the White House website site on 1 June 2025 a congratulatory message to the Coptic Orthodox Church for Global Coptic Day.
The President's message read:
'Today, I join the Coptic Orthodox Christian community in observing Global Coptic Day—a celebration of the ancient heritage, rich culture, and reverent worship of the Coptic Orthodox Church.
'Tracing its roots to Saint Mark, the apostle of Jesus Christ and Evangelist who brought the Christian faith to Egypt in the first century, the Coptic Church has been a beacon of Christendom in Africa for nearly 2,000 years.
'The Coptic community has left an indelible mark on the hearts of millions of Christians—most evidently seen in their timeless contributions to Christian theology and culture.
'This Global Coptic Day, we also pause to reflect upon the vicious and ongoing persecution of Coptic Orthodox Christians in Africa and across the Middle East. In 2015, 21 Coptic construction workers were brutally executed by ISIS terrorists in Libya. Like persecuted Christians all around the world, these heroic martyrs refused to renounce their faith—they exemplified their sacrificial love and steadfast devotion to God, even in the face of certain death. The Copts' persistence amid relentless persecution is a living testament to their unbreakable resolve and fearless dedication to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
'As we remember the extraordinary contributions and tragic martyrdoms of Coptic Orthodox Christians, my Administration renews its commitment to vigorously defending the right to religious liberty, a bedrock of the American way of life. I was honored to recently establish the Religious Liberty Commission, a team of religious leaders tasked with ensuring that Americans can freely practice their faith without government interference. I also signed an Executive Order to eradicate the pervasive anti-Christian bias sweeping across our Nation—correcting the unjust abuses, investigations, and persecutions of faithful Christians that occurred under the previous administration.
'As our Nation celebrates Global Coptic Day, we pray for an increased love of God and a rebirth of religious faith both in the United States and around the world. Today and every day, may the treasured traditions of the Coptic Orthodox Christian community serve as a light for all Americans—and may their unwavering devotion to Christ inspire our Nation to renew our love, faith, and trust in Almighty God.'
Global Coptic Day is marked annually by the Coptic Church on 1 June, a date which coincides with the Coptic Feast of the Entry of the Holy Family into Egypt. The first Global Coptic Day was celebrated on 1 June 2019. Comments

Coptic Church mourns 20 Syrians martyred at Damascus church in suicide bombing

The Coptic Orthodox Church issued a statement on 22 June mourning the 20 martyrs who lost their lives earlier that day in a suicide bombing in the church of Saint Elias in Damascus,Syria. The statement read: 'The Coptic Orthodox Church, led by Pope Tawadros II, bids farewell to the martyrs of Syria as they march towards the paradise of eternal joy. These martyrs fell as a result of the treacherous suicide bombing that took place inside the church of Saint Elias in the Douilaa in Damascus, Syria on Sunday 22 June 2025. 'We condemn the heinous bombing and all similar forms of violence, intimidation, and the stripping of any human being of their natural right to live in safety. The blood of the righteous Abel continues to cry out, bearing witness to human injustice towards fellow humans when evil takes control and the scale of righteousness is upset, so as to leading to a belief that killing is a good deed that pleases God. 'We pray that the comfort of the Holy Spirit fills the heart of our brother, His Beatitude Patriarch John X Yazigi, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East for the Greek Orthodox Church, as well as the hearts of the martyrs' families. May the Lord grant a swift recovery to the wounded, and may He bestow peace and calm upon beloved Syria, our region, and the entire world.' According to Reuters, at least 20 people were killed and dozens injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up at Mar-Elias Church in the Dweila neighbourhood of Syria's capital Damascus on Sunday 22 June. Syria's Interior Ministry said the suicide bomber was a member of IS, Islamic State. He entered the church, opened fire and then detonated his explosive vest. Syria's Health Ministry reported that 52 persons were also injured in the blast. Scenes from inside the church showed destruction, a bloodied floor, and shattered pews and masonry. Local Church sources say the church included between 350 and 400 worshippers that day. Islamic State has been behind several attempted attacks on churches in Syria since Assad's fall. The Syria martyrs have been mourned by Churches in Egypt and all throughout the region, also by the Councils of Egypt and Middle East Churches. They unanimously expressed pain, dubbing the bombing 'a wound in our heart', and expressed fears for Christian presence in the Middle East. The news impacted Copts in Egypt especially hard, since it brought to mind painful memories of a suicide bombing that had occurred in Cairo's Boutrossiya Church on 11 November 2016, also during Sunday Mass, in which 29 lost their lives, and 48 were wounded. But in the Cairo bombing, Egypt's Armed Forces rebuilt the damage in the church and fully renovated it, reopening it for worship by New Year 2017. UPDATED: Trump says Israel, Iran agree to 'complete and total ceasefire' to be phased in over 24 hours - International

US President Donald Trump today announced a comprehensive ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran, declaring an imminent end to what he termed "THE 12 DAY WAR." This dramatic development follows an overnight missile attack by Iran on the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which houses US troops. According to President Trump's post, the ceasefire agreement has been "fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran." The process is set to begin in approximately six hours from the time of the announcement, allowing both nations to conclude their current military operations. The overnight Iranian missile strike on Al Udeid Air Base was a direct retaliation for the recent US bombings of Iranian nuclear facilities. While explosions were heard over Qatar's capital, Doha, Qatari and US officials confirmed that the missiles were successfully intercepted, resulting in no casualties or significant damage. President Trump acknowledged the Iranian strike, calling it a "very weak response" and noting that the US was given advance warning, which helped prevent any loss of life. Iran, for its part, stated the strike was calibrated to mirror the number of bombs dropped by the US on its nuclear sites and was not intended to harm its "friendly and brotherly country, Qatar." The ceasefire agreement details a staggered de-escalation: Iran will initiate its ceasefire first, followed by Israel commencing its ceasefire upon the 12th hour. The conflict will then be officially declared "ENDED" at the 24th hour. During their respective ceasefire periods, both sides are expected to remain "PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL." President Trump expressed strong optimism for the success of the agreement, stating, "On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called 'THE 12 DAY WAR.'" He emphasized the significance of this resolution, noting, "This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn't, and never will!" The announcement concluded with a message of hope for the region: "God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East God bless the United States." This development marks a dramatic and rapid shift in the escalating conflict, which had seen direct military strikes between Israel, Iran, and direct US involvement. The international community had been bracing for further escalation, with concerns over rising oil prices and disrupted shipping lanes following Iran's threat to close the Strait of Hormuz. If confirmed and adhered to, this ceasefire could avert a wider, more devastating conflict in the Middle East. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
