George Michael Returns To The Top 40 With One Of His Most Celebrated Singles
Among all of George Michael's huge singles, there is one that stands out when it comes to listeners in the United Kingdom, his home country. Decades after it was released and years after the singer's passing, 'Careless Whisper' remains the track that fans in that nation seem to return to regularly. It is the one that appears on the charts most frequently — at least outside of Christmas, when his Wham! cut 'Last Christmas' becomes a favorite once again.
Michael scores a pair of top 40 hits in the U.K. this week with the same tune, as sales of the classic surge once more.
'Careless Whisper' Appears on Several Charts
'Careless Whisper' appears on only two song rankings in the U.K. at the moment, and it's a top 40 win on both of them. The song jumps up the Official Physical Singles Sales chart, which ranks the bestselling tracks on formats like CD, vinyl, and cassette. Last week, it sat at No. 62, but now it rises to No. 36. Coincidentally, it hits that mark in its thirty-sixth frame on this roster.
'Careless Whisper' Reappears Inside the Top 40
At the same time that 'Careless Whisper' bolts back into the top 40 on the Official Physical Singles Sales chart, it reenters the Official Vinyl Singles chart. Michael's cut didn't appear on the list of the bestselling individual tunes on wax in the U.K. just days ago, but now it's back at No. 38.

'Careless Whisper' was originally released on Wham!'s sophomore album Make It Big, but the tune is credited solely to Michael in the U.K. The track dropped in the summer of 1984, but it didn't become a hit on either the Official Physical Singles Sales chart or the Official Vinyl Singles chart until October 2024. Since then, the tune has departed the vinyl ranking several times, while it has never disappeared entirely from the Official Physical Singles Sales tally.
'Careless Whisper' Reached No. 1 All Around the World
'Careless Whisper' was a quick No. 1 hit in a number of countries all around the world in the mid-80s. The tune easily topped the main list of the most consumed songs in the U.K. and also brought Wham! to the summit on the Hot 100 in America.
The track was credited to both the group and Michael as a soloist in the U.S. and still stands as one of his and the duo's most popular compositions to this day.

The original lineup of Black Sabbath reunited for the first time in 20 years on Saturday in the U.K. — and for the last time ever, since the performance was also billed as the final concert ever for singer Ozzy Osbourne. The Birmingham stadium show climaxed with a four-song Sabbath set, preceded by Osbourne doing a five-song set of his solo material … preceded in turn by a full day's worth of metal and hard-rock all-stars doing mini-sets that included Sabbath covers as well as original material. 'It's so good to be on this fucking stage, you have no idea,' Osbourne told the crowd of 42,000 when his winged throne first rose up from under the stage. 'Let the madness begin!' Following the last number, the now presumably retired-for-good Osbourne was presented with a cake, as fireworks went off over Villa Park. Earlier, for his 'solo' set, Osbourne was supported by a band that included his longtime post-Sabbath guitarist Zakk Wylde as he sang 'I Don't Know,' 'Mr. Crowley,' 'Suicide Solution,' 'Mama I'm Coming Home' and 'Crazy Train.' Before performing 'Mama,' he told the audience that he had been 'laid up for six years' and added, 'Thank you from the bottom of my heart.' The show was viewed not just by the 42,000 in attendance at Villa Park in Birmingham in central England, but at least 1.5 million more who paid for a livestream — which was a bit of a misnomer, since the stream ran about two hours behind the live festivities. The day went off without many obvious hitches, although one unexpected development was Disturbed singer David Draiman being greeted with boos as well as cheers. (Draiman participated in one of the all-star jams, singing covers of 'Sweet Leaf' and Osbourne's solo song 'Shot in the Dark.') 'We gonna start this?' he defiantly asked the crowd. It was believed that the booing had to do with the singer's very vocal support of Israel; he recently congratulated Sharon Osbourne after she called for Kneecap's visas to be revoked, among other controversial statements. It did not come as a surprise that Osbourne was seated for this final performance. Although he had still been performing standing in 2022, by the time of 2024, when he was inducted as a solo artist into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Osbourne was seated for that show. The 76-year-old has suffered from back problems in recent years as well as his long-diagnosed case of Parkinsons disease. On his SiriusXM radio show this year, he said, 'I can't walk, but you know what I was thinking over the holidays? For all my complaining, I'm still alive.' Guns N' Roses may have dropped huge hint ahead of Black Sabbath's final gig at Villa Park
Hollywood rockers Guns N' Roses appear to have dropped a big hint over their setlist choice ahead of their appearance at Black Sabbath's Back To The Beginning concert at Villa Park. Axl Rose and co are one of the top artists on the bill for Sabbath's swansong and it comes just a couple of weeks after they headlined their own show at Aston Villa's stadium. They are currently in the middle of their European leg of their World Tour and two nights ago they played in Trondheim, Norway, where they appeared to give a big clue about what they have in store when they return to Birmingham. A hint at what is to come at Villa Park? It's likely that fans at the Sabbath gig will get a medley of classics from the band including Paradise City, Sweet Child O' Mine, and Welcome To The Jungle, but they may just get a Sabbath tribute too. The band have also previously covered Sabbath's 'It's Alright' a song which featured on their 'Live Era 87-93' release back in 1999, so that could also be a choice on the night. If you're yet to secure a ticket, it's worth checking the line-up to see if your favourite band is playing as the concert will also be streamed live. Several Birmingham venues, including The Flapper, Subside and Scruffy Murphy's, will be broadcasting the show, reports Birmingham Live. Metallica, Slayer and Alice in Chains are crossing the Atlantic for the event, with Hollywood star Jason Momoa confirmed as the host. Jessie J 'experiencing some delayed sadness and frustration' after mastectomy
Jessie J regrets not saying 'goodbye to her old breast' amid her mastectomy. The 37-year-old singer underwent the surgery after being diagnosed with breast cancer and admitted she went into survival mode and is now experiencing some 'delayed sadness and frustration' as she starts to process her ordeal. She wrote on Instagram Stories: 'My experience was when I got diagnosed I went into survival mode. 'There was so much going on with appointments … 'I didn't really have a lot of time to process what was happening or what was going to happen. So I'm currently experiencing some delayed sadness and frustration by having time to process what IS happening. A little disappointed in myself I didn't say goodbye to my old boob enough. Sounds silly but that's where I'm at. Again thats my journey. I'm sure others felt and did it different. 'But for me I didn't think beyond the surgery. I was just being strong. 'Well now I'm here and letting myself be angry and sad and all the things. Just for a few days. Then I will sew some padding in a bra to even them out order some t shirts and crack tf on.' And, Jessie revealed she is making progress on her healing journey, after getting her drain taken out two weeks on from her surgery. She said: '2 weeks post surgery. Had my drain out 2 nights ago. She said breathe in and take a hard breath out. 'She whipped that thang out so quick. Woiii oii. Weirdest feeling. But so nice to have it out after 12 days. Now it's just me and my wonky boobs trying to figure out how to dress until I match them up. The left one is looking at the right one like 'you ok babe?' However, despite her diagnosis and surgery, Jessie is still able to make jokes, quipping that she is 'changing my name to The LopJess Monster and I'm moving to [Scotland]'.
