Davis: Roughriders DB Antoine Brooks Jr. explains why he can't shake football
So Brooks played at the University of Maryland. As a freshman he was one of three players suspended for shooting BB guns on-campus. The other two were charged with assault; Brooks had his suspension lifted and ultimately became the Terrapins' MVP and three-time conference all-star on a team rife with quarterback and coaching changes.

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Brooks in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft. A hamstring injury ended his four-game stint in Pittsburgh. He joined the Super Bowl-winning Los Angeles Rams for eight regular-season games in 2021 and appeared in two playoff contests, exclusively on special teams, but wasn't dressed when L.A. beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in Super Bowl LVI.

'They drafted me so I was a little distraught when (the Steelers) let me go,' said Brooks. 'L.A. was like a spark of sunshine. I had fun, enjoyed it and made the most of it because I was mainly a special teams player. I didn't play a lot of defence. I knew what my job was when I went there, so I really just embraced everything.'

Brooks spent 2023 in the XFL. He spent 2024 on Saskatchewan's practice roster, except for one game, and was there again until Saskatchewan's 37-18 victory over the B.C. Lions on June 28. When starting cornerback Tevaughn Campbell hurt a groin, Brooks took over and intercepted a pass from B.C. quarterback Jeremiah Masoli.

Following a bye week and without Campbell ruled out, it looks like Brooks is finally going to start for the Roughriders against the visiting Stampeders.

'I never lose interest in playing,' said Brooks. 'Especially when you come to practice and you start feeling the same, like a little kid again.

'Honestly, I love my teammates. I make sure I'm brighter than the room because if I'm having a dark day, I know their day is gonna be dark. You know, I'm on the practice squad and I'm embracing it. So they're gonna embrace their job even more.'

He's back: Veteran James O'Connor is in the Wallabies squad to play the British and Irish Lions
BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — James O'Connor has returned to a Wallabies squad almost three years after his last test when the veteran flyhalf was included to face the British and Irish Lions in the first test in Brisbane on July 19. Australia coach Joe Schmidt looked for some experience in his 36-man squad named Friday following a reported spinal injury to his first-choice playmaker Noah Lolesio. O'Connor, who started at flyhalf in all three matches of the 2013 losing Lions series, played the last of his 64 tests for Australia in 2022. The inclusion of 35-year-old O'Connor, who was part of the Crusaders' Super Rugby Pacific-winning lineup this year, was one of only two changes from Australia's squad that faced Fiji last weekend. Queensland's Melbourne-born lock Josh Canham, who made his test debut last year, is also a new face, replacing Western Force forward Darcy Swain. With the Wallabies having a week to prepare for the first test, Schmidt did not name a captain. With 20 forwards and 16 backs, there are two uncapped players in ACT Brumbies player Corey Toole and Western Force back rower Nick Champion de Crespigny included in the squad. James Slipper, the record-holder for most Wallabies appearances with 144 tests, could also join O'Connor and retired test great George Smith in playing for Australia in consecutive British and Irish Lions series. Injured forwards Will Skelton and Rob Valetini, who were both unavailable for Australia's 21-18 win over Fiji due to calf injuries, were included. Veteran scrumhalf Nic White will finally get a chance to play a test against the Lions after injury ruled him out of the 2013 series, while playmaker Tom Lynagh can follow in the footsteps of his father Michael, who played against the 1989 Lions. 'As Wallabies coaches, we have tried to balance continuity with form and freshness, but there were some very tight calls,' Schmidt said. 'We're conscious of how special it is to play the British and Irish Lions, so for those selected in the squad, they'll be competing for test jerseys, while also trying to help others prepare. 'We need to improve our accuracy and cohesion with a very short runway leading up to the first test here in eight days.' The Lions are 4-0 in Australia since a 28-24 loss to Argentina in a warmup in Dublin. They have beaten all of Australia's Super Rugby franchises. Before a win over the Brumbies this week, they defeated the Western Force, Queensland Reds, and New South Wales Waratahs. The second test in the series is July 26 in Melbourne and the third Aug. 2 in Sydney. ___ Australia squad to face the British and Irish Lions in the first test: Forwards: Allan Alaalatoa, Angus Bell, Josh Canham, Nick Champion de Crespigny, Matt Faessler, Nick Frost, Langi Gleeson, Tom Hooper, Fraser McReight, Zane Nonggorr, Billy Pollard, David Porecki, Tom Robertson, Will Skelton, James Slipper, Carlo Tizzano, Taniela Tupou, Rob Valetini, Jeremy Williams, Harry Wilson. Backs: Filipo Daugunu, Ben Donaldson, Jake Gordon, Len Ikitau, Max Jorgensen, Andrew Kellaway, Tom Lynagh, Tate McDermott, James O'Connor Hunter Paisami, Dylan Pietsch, Harry Potter, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, Corey Toole, Nic White, Tom Wright. ___ AP rugby:

Seated at his locker, wearing a towel, in a scene reminiscent of bygone days when reporters and players could have lengthy, engaging conversations, a member of the Riders' ever-vigilant PR department asked if Brooks wanted to get dressed first. Please try again 'I'm OK, I'm checking. I mean, as long as I don't get up,' he said. Brooks smiled. Everyone laughed. And away went the interview. 'I never really changed,' said Brooks. 'So that's probably what really got me here, you know what I'm saying? Being a good kid and making sure everybody gets the same Antoine when I show up.' Roughriders head coach Corey Mace said Brooks is one of the most-liked players in the room, obvious by his teammates' reactions to his new-found media attention. 'He's got an infectious personality,' said Mace. 'Everybody loves the man. He's constantly smiling. When you match that with his work ethic, with what he shows on the field, even back to when he was on the practice roster, he's given us excellent looks. 'He had a helluva camp. I think he led the team in interceptions and it only took him a couple plays to get one in the game. He's a dangerous player, no doubt. And he had a helluva game on special teams, too.' Brooks was a high school quarterback and DB in Lanham, Md., until badly breaking his right wrist and ankle on the same offensive play during his senior season. 'Had a compound fracture on my ankle,' said Brooks. 'Got a long rod on my outside ankle. And the inside, the bone came out. It was pretty much devastating. I had blood all on my cleat. I still got the cleat.' Brooks was fortunate enough to have one of the country's top surgeons available to reconstruct his bones before reassessing his football future. He kept the 'brand new' cleat to remind him of what he has expecting to overcome. When he asked his mother if he should keep playing, she replied, 'It doesn't matter to me.'
