UK households urged to check broadband deals now to get full fibre without paying more

Yahoo18 hours ago

Millions of UK households have been urged to check if they can get full fibre without paying a penny more.
Go.Compare has said around 11 million homes across the UK could get access to the high internet speeds but are unaware of the broadband deals currently on offer.
Many of which could be entitled to a free upgrade, as the government continues to push for access to full fibre nationwide by 2030.

The Labour government has set a goal to bring 85% of the nation into the fastest internet speed by this year.
Matt Sanders from Go.Compare said: "Note down the key details of your current broadband deal, such as the connection type, speeds you've been promised and what you're paying."
To check your eligibility for full fibre broadband, comparison sites such as MoneySuperMarket detail the best deals currently on offer.
All you need to do is punch in your postcode and it will show which internet providers have coverage in your area.
If your current provider is listed, but you don't have full fibre, then you may be due an upgrade.
Go.Compare and Which? offer broadband speed check tools to compare how fast your internet is and what is currently available on the market.
It comes as Broadband Genie has named the internet providers that are best for online gaming, working from home, and streaming in its annual awards.
The annual survey named Plusnet as the 'Best Broadband Provider' of the year based off a OnePoll survey of 3,997 broadband bill payers, as well as an analysis of 291,467 broadband speed tests that were run over a 12-month period.
Broadband Genie expert Alex Tofts said: 'Customer service is an area which can make or break a positive experience with your internet provider.
"Get it right, and customers feel valued and looked after. Get it wrong, and customers will be left frustrated, unheard and will want to look elsewhere.
"We can only hope these big players will be pulling their socks up to improve their services. It's no surprise that in a year when customers are once again having to swallow hefty mid-contract price rises that they feel they're not getting value for money.
"This is more evidence and only affirms our stance that Ofcom needs to ban mid-contract price rises.'
Plusnet won 'Best Provider' as 79% of users rated them the best.
The 'Fastest Widely Available Provider' was Virgin Media 188Mbps (average download), while Vodafone secured 'Best Value for Money'.

Huge energy bill drop for millions from Tuesday - but you need to do one thing

Households are being encouraged to submit their meter readings before the energy price cap drops by 7 per cent on Tuesday. The average household bill for those not yet on a fixed tariff will decrease by £129 to £1,720 per year when the new price cap from Ofgem, which sets the maximum amount companies can charge customers per unit of energy, takes effect. This is £660 (28%) less than at the peak of the energy crisis at the beginning of 2023 when the government introduced the energy price guarantee. However, prices remain high with the forthcoming level £152 (10%) more than the same period last year. The price cap does not limit total bills as households still pay for the amount of energy they use. While about 35 per cent of domestic customers have now actively chosen a fixed deal, which is not subject to the price cap, roughly 22 million households in England, Wales, and Scotland are still on the energy price cap. These households should read their meter by the end of the month to ensure they fully benefit from lower energy prices from July 1. Failure to do so risks paying the higher pre-July 1 rate for energy used in the form of estimated bills. READ MORE: MPs to debate over 60s getting free bus pass in England after major breakthrough READ MORE: Martin Lewis issues advice to anyone changing money ahead of going on holiday this summer Research for comparison site Uswitch indicates that one fifth of households without smart meters have not submitted their meter readings in the last three months, and 6 per cent have not done so for an entire year. Uswitch has revealed that average energy costs for homes on a standard price cap tariff are set to drop from £113 in June to £63 in July, attributing the decrease to lower summer usage and reduced unit rates. The comparison site is encouraging consumers to lock into fixed deals while prices are favourable, highlighting that there are currently 10 fixed tariffs available that undercut the July price cap, with the most economical option offering savings of about £145 for the typical household. Uswitch's energy expert Ben Gallizzi commented: "Customers who don't have a smart meter should submit their readings before or on Tuesday 1 July, so their supplier has an updated – and accurate – view of their account." He also warned of potential increases in energy bills and the price cap this autumn due to global market uncertainties, advising: "But households can get ahead of this possible price hike by fixing at cheaper rates now. Currently, there are a range of fixed deals currently available that are around £145 cheaper than the July price cap for the average household." Gallizzi urged customers to consider switching soon: "If you can switch to a deal cheaper than the July price cap, now is a good time to make the change. We urge customers to run an energy comparison as soon as possible." Additionally, Ofgem has reminded the public that they are not obliged to stick with the price cap, stating "there are better deals out there". The drop in energy prices is set to provide some respite for households that endured an "awful April" with bill increases, including Ofgem's previous 6.4 per cent price cap hike. Families under financial strain have also faced the largest water bill increase since at least February 1988, as well as significant hikes in council tax, mobile and broadband tariffs, and road tax.

US tariff relief for UK carmakers and aerospace comes into force

Tariff cuts for the automotive and aerospace sectors have come into force after Sir Keir Starmer finalised parts of a deal for relief from US import taxes. Car manufacturers exporting to the US will face a 10% tariff quota, down from 27.5%, while the aerospace sector will see a 10% levy removed entirely. Sir Keir hailed the 'historic trade deal' with the US, clinched after Donald Trump imposed the import taxes as part of his 'liberation day' tariffs on countries across the world. The Prime Minister and US president finalised the deal for those sectors at the G7 summit, but levies on steel have been left standing at 25% rather than falling to zero as originally agreed. Talks are ongoing to secure 0% tariffs on core steel products from the UK. The executive order signed by Mr Trump suggests the US wants assurances on the supply chains for UK steel intended for export, as well as on the 'nature of ownership' of production facilities. Sir Keir said: 'Our historic trade deal with the United States delivers for British businesses and protects UK jobs. 'From today, our world-class automotive and aerospace industries will see tariffs slashed, safeguarding key industries that are vital to our economy. 'We will always act in the national interest – backing British businesses and workers, delivering on our Plan for Change.' Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the deal would save hundreds of millions each year and safeguard thousands of jobs. 'We agreed this deal with the US to protect jobs and support growth in some of our most vital sectors – and today, we're delivering on that promise for the UK's world-class automotive and aerospace industries.' Kevin Craven, head of aerospace trade association ADS, said the sector 'hugely appreciated' the efforts to reach a deal. Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders chief executive Mike Hawes said the agreement was 'good news for US customers and a huge relief for the UK automotive companies that export to this critically important market'. The Government is also due to update Parliament on Monday on ethanol and quotas on US beef. Under the deal, it was agreed that a 20% tariff on US beef imports to the UK be removed and the quota for US beef raised to 13,000 metric tonnes. A 19% tariff on ethanol imports from the US is also due to be removed, with a tariff-free quota of 1.4 billion litres of US ethanol applied. The bioethanol industry says the deal has made it impossible to compete with heavily subsidised American products. The UK's largest bioethanol plant warned last week that it could be weeks from stopping production. Hull-based Vivergo Fuels said the start of talks with the Government was a 'positive signal' but that it was simultaneously beginning consultation with staff to wind down the plant.
