French woman shocked after realising AFL team copied her national anthem
TikTok user @bonjourmelbourne witnessed Brisbane's impressive 37-point win over Carlton on Thursday night and says her 'jaw dropped' when she heard the club's team song echoing around the ground.
'Can someone please explain why the French anthem is the Brisbane Lions theme song,' she posted.
Some footy fans were also confused by the bizarre revelation, but diehard Lions fans set her straight in the comments section.
The club's team song, 'The Pride of Brisbane Town', is indeed sung to the tune of La Marseillaise, the French national anthem.
The Lions adopted the tune in 1997, but it originates from Fitzroy, who merged with the Brisbane Bears to form the club.
The song was written by former player Bill Stephen while on an end-of-season trip to Perth in 1952.
'We really didn't have a song that united us at Fitzroy, and I had just been to the pictures to see Casablanca and was impressed by the scene in the restaurant,' Stephen explained.
'The Germans were belting out their Nazi song, and some bloke started singing this French song. Gradually all the French joined in and overwhelmed the Germans with their voice. I was very impressed with the song, La Marseillaise.
'As we were in a carriage on our way to the West having a booze-up, I told the boys that we needed a good song and gave them the tune to La Marseillaise.
'Anyway, I wanted all the boys to help make up the song. I started them off with the first line, which was, 'We are the boys from Fitzroy my lads,' then I went to all the others and each gave me a different line.
'We must have sung it 30,000 times by the time we got home a fortnight later. That song kept Fitzroy people alive during our bad days. People used to sing it, and sing it, and sing it.'
The Lions showed no mercy against the Blues last week, romping to a 15.13 (103) to 9.12 (66) victory at Marvel Stadium.
Brisbane's Josh Dunkley (28 disposals, 13 tackles) was awarded the inaugural Robert Walls Medal, struck in honour of the dual-club great, who died in May.
The only sore point for the Lions (12-4-1) was Noah Answerth's suspected season-ending achilles injury, which led to the defender's substitution before halftime.
Lachie Neale (31 disposals), Dayne Zorko (28) and Will Ashcroft (28) were all influential and Charlie Cameron (three majors) led a group of 11 Brisbane goal-kickers.
'Our pressure was good tonight,' Brisbane coach Chris Fagan said.
'We got 35 forward-half turnovers, which is a large number, 20 tackles inside-50, seven goals eight from forward-half turnovers.
'All that was on the back of pressure and good tackling, so it was a very good effort in that regard.'

Deceitful trick married men are using to bamboozle OnlyFans models
A popular adult star has revealed how some men are now posing as women online in order to trick OnlyFans models into giving them exclusive content for free. Layla Kelly said that she's noticed an uptick in men pretending to be women by using photos that they've obtained without permission. Speaking to about the shocking trend, Kelly said that these men will try to disarm creators by using a fake female persona. They'll then pretend that they're interested in getting plastic surgery or a medical procedure in order to obtain exclusive, explicit content. In some cases, men are using intimate photos of women that they know in real life to create their fake female alter-egos. 'Where it crosses the line is when someone who hasn't consented or given permission is having their identity and photos used unknowingly, especially given that this is a very intimate platform,' she explained. 'Often nude images are used too and these women have no idea. It's so wrong,' Kelly added. Kelly went on to say that some men are even using IDs and photos from their own wives and girlfriends to scam OnlyFans stars. 'What bothers me most about this is the clothed and unclothed images of the women they are using when pulling this sneaky act,' Banks said. 'One guy even sent me a wedding photo paired with a driving licence and I knew it had to be his wife or his sister. Either way, I highly doubt she knew what he was up to,' she added. When it comes to OnlyFans scams, it's a two-way street. Many popular OnlyFans creators now hire third-party companies to run their accounts, who provide 'chatters' to handle all of the creator's private messages. So while subscribers may think that they're chatting directly to the models, they could be speaking to absolutely anybody. One professional chatter hired by popular OnlyFans models is a 27-year-old man from Venezuela. With the large amount of subscribers that popular creators have and the amount of money they're raking in, it's no surprise that many models have turned to third-party companies to run their pages. Reality star and OnlyFans creator Farrah Abraham recently revealed that she makes seven figures from her page.

Mitchell Starc leads the onslaught as West Indies are skittled for just 27
The West Indies' total was the second lowest in Test history, eclipsed only by New Zealand's 26 against England in 1955, and easily beat their own worst total of 47, also against England in 2004. At one point the hosts languished on nought for three and their innings included a record seven ducks. They lost the contest in Kingston by 176 runs. Starc made a stunning start, removing John Campbell, Kevlon Anderson, Brandon King, Mikyle Louis and Shai Hope in 15 balls, giving up just two runs in the process. His lbw against Louis also brought up his 400th Test wicket, making him only the fourth Australian to achieve the feat, in his 100th Test. The Windies teetered to 22 for six at tea but Australia continued to show no mercy after the break and Scott Boland reeled off a hat-trick to leave the home team staring at an embarrassing finish. Australia's Scott Boland had a good day (PA) Justin Greaves top-scored for the Windies on just 11, with leg byes (six) their second top scorer. Starc – who wrapped up the contest by bowling Jayden Seales – finished with six wickets for nine runs from 7.3 overs. Boland's figures were three for two. Prior to Starc's heroics, the previous best five-wicket haul was from his fellow Australian Ernie Toshack, who took five wickets in 19 balls against India in 1947.
