Married At First Sight star reveals devastating cryptic pregnancy in heartbreaking admission

Daily Mail16-05-2025
Married At First Sight star Laura Vaughan has revealed she suffered a devastating cryptic pregnancy, that she didn't discover until the third trimester.
The reality star, 35, who recently announced that she had found love again after her failed union on the show, opened up about the traumatic experience, which happened in 2016.
She was forced to undergo a medical abortion after unknowingly putting her foetus at risk of 'extreme harm' and defects with the drug she was taking to treat her acne.
Laura told The Sun: 'It was very difficult because I went from not thinking I was pregnant to being seven months pregnant to then having a very prolonged abortion and where I was so far gone.
'Then, when I got home from the procedure, my milk came in, which, as you can imagine, was just really hard to deal with.
'I hunkered down at home for weeks and didn't talk to anyone.'
Laura appeared on Married at First Sight in 2023 when she was paired with Arthur Poremba, but their union was not to last after she realised he couldn't give her what she wanted in a marriage.
Reflecting on her cryptic pregnancy, Laura said she thought it was 'impossible' when she first discovered that she was pregnant.
This shock was only worsened when she was told that she was in the third trimester.
While the star had sought treatment for her missing period and stomach cramps, her GP told her it was the result of a 'ruptured cyst' and not a pregnancy.
However, she admits she was referred for an additional scan at the time but failed to book it in.
Laura said that despite being so far along, she was able to fit into six 6 to 8 dresses, which also left her convinced that her GP's diagnosis was the correct one.
She added: 'It was literally the week I decided to test that my stomach popped, and I remember thinking "this isn't right".'
The situation went from bad to worse when Laura discovered the effect that her acne drug, Isotretinoin, is responsible for birth defects.
Laura speculates that the pregnancy was the result of an expired condom as she remembers using protection.
Those taking the acne drug should be advised to use two methods of contraception because of the immense risk to an unborn unborn foetus, according to dermatologists.
Laura said that due to the advanced stage of her pregnancy, she was offered a medical abortion and it impacted her 'heavily'.
Some of the issues she faced were the pain of the procedure itself, which lasted a week instead of a day and a half, and an alleged lack of support from medical staff, who she claims forgot to feed her on occasion.
The star is hoping that by speaking out about her experience, she can dispel some of the shame that exists around planned abortions.
Referring to her stint on MAFS, she said she chose not to tell producers about the ordeal but was forced to confront it anyway when discussing future family plans with husband Arthur.
Laura, who said she is smitten with her new partner, said they have discussed the possibility of having children and neither of them see it in their future.

How common are cryptic pregnancies?
One in 450 pregnant women in the UK don't know they are going to have a baby until week 20 of their pregnancy (half-way through), and one in 2,500 women are oblivious to the fact until they go into labour.
It's a phenomenon known as cryptic pregnancy - also referred to as 'pregnancy denial'.
Cryptic pregnancies typically affect either young women, who have never experienced a pregnancy, or women who believe they've gone through the menopause and who choose not to use contraception.
Women with erratic menstrual cycles are also more likely to miss signs they are expecting. This is especially true among women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), where small cysts grow on the ovaries; the hormone imbalance often leads to irregular or non-existent periods.
Yet there are some women who will continue to have monthly bleeds throughout their pregnancy. In this case, a scan at the local GP may be the only method of confirmation.
Women may simply not expect to find they are pregnant if they are taking the Pill - but then those taking it religiously can still become pregnant.
Eight in 100 women can get pregnant while on the Pill - usually not because of problems with the Pill, but with the taker, either because they've missed the Pill, thrown up or had diarrhoea.

Gregg Wallace apologises but says he is 'not a groper, a sex pest or a flasher'

Former MasterChef host Gregg Wallace has again apologised to anyone hurt by his behaviour, but insisted he is 'not a groper, a sex pest or a flasher'. In an interview with The Sun, the TV presenter also defended his sacked former co-host John Torode, telling the paper he is 'not a racist'. Torode was the subject of an allegation about using racist language that was upheld as part of a review carried out by law firm Lewis Silkin into the alleged behaviour of co-presenter Wallace. Torode said he had 'no recollection of the incident' and was 'shocked and saddened' by the allegation. In November 2024 it was announced that Wallace would step away from his role on the BBC cooking show while historical allegations of misconduct were investigated. Join the North Wales Live Whatsapp community now Wallace issued an apology saying he was 'deeply sorry for any distress caused' and that he 'never set out to harm or humiliate' in the wake of the Lewis Silkin review that saw 45 out of 83 allegations made against him upheld. The review concluded that the 'majority of the substantiated allegations against Mr Wallace related to inappropriate sexual language and humour', adding that 'a smaller number of allegations of other inappropriate language and being in a state of undress were also substantiated', with 'one incident of unwelcome physical contact' also substantiated. In fresh comments to The Sun, Wallace acknowledged that he had said things that 'offended people, that weren't socially acceptable and perhaps they felt too intimidated or nervous to say anything at the time. 'I understand that now - and to anyone I have hurt, I am so sorry.' Wallace added: 'I'm not a groper. People think I've been taking my trousers down and exposing myself - I am not a flasher. People think I'm a sex pest. I am not.' Wallace also said his recent autism diagnosis means he struggles 'to read people'. 'I know people find me weird,' he said. 'Autism is a disability, a registered disability.' Pointing to the allegation against Torode, Wallace told the paper: 'I've known John for 30 years and he is not a racist. And as evidence of that, I'll show you the incredible diversity of the people that he has championed, MasterChef winners, over the years. 'There is no way that man is a racist. No way. And my sympathies go out to John because I don't want anybody to go through what I've been through.' It was announced this week that a series of MasterChef filmed last year before allegations against Wallace and Torode were upheld will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from August 6. A decision on airing the celebrity series and Christmas special has not been decided, with plans to be confirmed later in the year, the BBC said. Both presenters will still feature in the upcoming series, but the edit will be looked at in light of the findings of an investigation, with focus being given to the contestants, the PA news agency understands. A BBC spokesperson said: 'After careful consideration and consultation with the contestants, we have decided to broadcast the amateur series of MasterChef on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 6 August. 'MasterChef is an amazing competition which is life-changing for the amateur chefs taking part. The focus of it has always been their skill and their journey. 'This has not been an easy decision in the circumstances and we appreciate not everyone will agree with it. In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters. 'We have been very clear on the standards of behaviour that we expect of those who work at the BBC or on shows made for the BBC. However, we believe that broadcasting this series is the right thing to do for these cooks who have given so much to the process. 'We want them to be properly recognised and give the audience the choice to watch the series. At this stage we have not taken a decision on the celebrity series and Christmas special, which was filmed earlier this year, and we will confirm our plans later in the year. 'Most importantly MasterChef is a brilliant, much-loved programme which is bigger than any one individual. There are many talented, dedicated and hard-working people who make the show what it is. "It will continue to flourish on the BBC and we look forward to it returning stronger than ever in the future.'

Naked Attraction host Anna Richardson sinks claws into 'deeply unethical' Love Island - insisting she 'refuses to watch it in on a point of principle'

Naked Attraction host Anna Richardson has sunk her claws into the 'deeply unethical' ITV2 show Love Island - and has insisted that she 'refuses to watch it in on a point of principle'. The twelfth series of the programme returned to our screens last month and viewers have enjoyed the drama that has come along with it. Love Island, currently hosted by Maya Jama, 30, has become a huge fan favourite since it hit our screens in 2015, and has managed to get 1.4m views across all their platforms for this year's launch. But another popular, but very different show is Naked Attraction - and host Anna thinks that people love the Channel 4 programe so much because it's 'funny' and there are plenty of different bodies on display. While she thinks that Love Island doesn't have as much diversity when it comes to the representation of bodies. Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, Anna said: 'You're seeing a range of bodies, it makes you feel comfortable about your own [Naked Attraction]. 'And I personally have never, ever watched Love Island, so I kind of refuse, on point of principle, because I think that Love Island is a deeply unethical show. 'So what you're doing is you're showing youth and beauty and rivalry as a betrayal, as some kind of standard that we should be held up to, whereas N aked Attraction does the exact opposite. 'So yeah, I think it's about, I think it's a gloriously bonkers show about acceptance.' She added: 'When you scratch beneath the surface of negative attraction, it's actually about acceptance. 'It is about the fact that nobody's body is perfect. This is about vulnerability. It's about acceptance. 'It's about seeing you for who you really are in all your human glory, and people actually saying, do you know what? 'Whether I've got a stoma, or I have a disability, I've got one leg, or I'm in a wheelchair, whatever happens to be, or I'm a trans person on my journey, all of us deserve to be loved and accepted for who we are.' The programme hit our screens in 2016 and went on to air 65 episodes across seven series. More and more shows are now focusing on sex, with the likes of people losing their virginity on Virgin Island, and couples opening up their relationships on Open House: The Great Sex Experiment. Anna thinks that Naked Attraction has paved the way for those kind of programmes to exist. 'Everybody had a breakdown when Naked Attraction was announced, she told us. 'And, you know, the press went absolutely crazy... "This is a new low for, you know, new low and moral standards on British television". 'And of course, we were trailblazers, so now we've paved the way to things being more open and talked about and accepting. 'I've watched both Open House and Virgin Island, and I think they're both incredible formats. 'In terms of Open House, what they're doing, very cleverly there is just merely reflecting the fact that polyamory is on the rise, people are sexually open and curious. 'And Virgin Island? I think that's an extraordinary idea, that there are sex therapists out there that ultimately are prepared to have sex with people who have psychological issues around their virginity. 'Again, what you're dealing with here is issues of being vulnerable and people being human. Yeah, so I think they're both fantastic formats.' Many are desperate to know if the show will ever make a return, and Anna is hoping that it does happen in the future. 'I am desperate for it to come back,' Anna told us. 'I want a male campaign that basically says "Bring back Naked Attraction." 'It is wildly popular. People absolutely love it. It is funny. 'It's about acceptance. And I think at the moment, in a world where we're all actually a bit p***ed off and we feel ground down in this country, you know, there's a huge amount of division and anger.' She added: 'So the fact is, the truth is, I have no idea whether it's coming back. 'I really hope so, because it's a fun show to do, and it does very well, but I have no idea about about the politics of whether it is or not, but let's keep our fingers crossed.' The telly star has helped people try and find a suitable partner by stripping down and baring all on Naked Attraction, but there appears to be a more popular way of meeting people these days - and it includes being in a hotter climate. Anna has joined forces with iD Mobile, who have recently found out that more Brits than ever are dating abroad. She told us: 'The [dating] landscape in the UK is becoming more diminished, and people are going abroad, and off the back of that, they are then offering inclusive Data Roaming to 50 different countries that people can find love worldwide, basically with ease, without landing a huge bill at the end of it. 'But the the survey results are very, very interesting, just just given the fact that we know that 45% of people say that their best romantic experience happened abroad. 'Most of us have had a holiday romance. 'We know that around a third of people use dating apps when they go abroad to hook up with locals, but also because they're saying that actually, they get a more authentic experience of the town or the city that they're in if they use a language app or dating app.' Anna Richardson has partnered with iD Mobile to explore the rise in overseas dating and highlight how roaming charges are preventing millions of Brits from making meaningful connections abroad. With inclusive Roaming in more destinations than any UK network, iD Mobile is helping holidaymakers stay connected for love, fun and everything in between. Visit for more information.

But this week The Sun revealed why Melanie Sykes has ditched fame to focus on the quiet life in Yorkshire, where she spends her days painting nude pictures of herself. Here, we look at what some of the sexiest stars of yesteryear are up to now, from successful TV careers to tragic health battles… Dani Behr Nothing summed up the 90s quite like pop culture show The Word. And front and centre was Dani Behr, the gorgeous blonde presenter with the husky voice who joined the programme in 1992 at just 17 years old. Following her tenure on the show, Dani embarked on a brief but high profile relationship with Manchester United star Ryan Giggs and was later axed from CBBC's The Saturday Show, after making risque comments to a lads mag about having 'seedy' sex in an NCP car park. Dani, 55, ditched the UK in the early noughties to live in the States to work as a luxury real estate agent in Los Angeles, selling million dollar houses. Now a mum of two, she's kept herself ingrained in showbusiness, and has just announced that a new show which she created, called 'Members Only: Palm Beach,' has been picked up by Netflix. It will follow 'a group of glamorous women navigating America's most exclusive social circle.' Melinda Messenger With her tumbling blonde locks, cheeky grin and flawless figure, Melinda was the ultimate pin up and one of the 90s most iconic glamour girls. I was a Page 3 girl and popped up in James Bond film... then got addicted to heroin The Sun labelled her 'The Girl of the Thrillenium' and she was dubbed the new Eva Herzigova as she shot to fame thanks to posing in her undies for a double glazing advert. Nowadays, things are drastically different for 54 year old Mel, who has three children and lives a peaceful life in the Berkshire countryside. She likes to plant flowers, walk her dog and is a fully trained psychotherapist. Melinda, who regularly appears as a guest at wellness festivals across the country, was back in the news recently to argue her 21 year old daughter, Evie, was not a 'nepo baby'. 21 Melinda Messenger emerging from a swimming pool onto a Sun towel back in 1997 Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd 21 Melinda Messenger at Octopus Park in Tenerife back in 1997 Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd 21 Legendary Page 3 girl hasn't aged a day as she poses in swimsuit Credit: instagram/ Reports claimed Evie was going into modelling, having been given a leg up by her famous mum. But Mel chimed into the debate insisting 'She isn't a model, though, to be fair she could be if she wanted to, but I am her mum, so I might be a tad biased.' Keeley Hazell As glamour girls go, few were as popular as Keeley at her peak. 21 Keeley Hazel, 21 with 'Come on England' roses back in 2007 Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd 21 Keeley featured in practically every lads mag going Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd 21 Keeley turned to acting appearing in Hollywood films Horrible Bosses 2 with Jennifer Aniston Credit: Getty Images - Getty Not only did she feature in practically every lads mag going, but her Official Keeley Calendar 2007 sold 30,000 copies in its first couple of days, making it one of the biggest sellers of that year. And this was a time when celeb calendars were big business. Famed for her doe eyed girl next door looks, Keeley turned to acting after modelling, appearing in Hollywood films Horrible Bosses 2 with Jennifer Aniston and Like Crazy, alongside Jennifer Lawrence. But it's her turn as evil chairman Rupert Mannion's wife, Bex, in Ted Lasso that has really put her on the map. She's also one of the show's writers. With her tongue firmly in cheek, Keeley, 38, will release her first book next month, a collection of essays entitled 'Everyone's Seen My Tits.' Jodie Marsh She's a long way from her sexy pin up past, but Jodie Marsh was once one of the hottest women in showbiz. 21 Jodie Marsh at the FHM 100 Sexiest Women event Credit: Rex Features 21 Jodie Marsh became famous for her special bra outfit Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd 21 Jodie recently won a battle against her local council in Essex Credit: John McLellan Famed for her daring, outrageous outfits and constant comparisons to fellow model Katie Price, Jodie was a mainstay at celeb events and on reality shows in the early 00s. However, a lot has changed and Jodie, 46, now runs an animal sanctuary called Fripps Farm, where she keeps everything from emus to lemurs. She recently won a battle against her local council in Essex to keep the animals, but last month the former glamour girl begged fans to donate money to her project, after learning the farm's social media pages had been taken down. Taking to X (formerly Twitter) Jodie could be seen cuddling an emu and pleading, 'We are working on getting them back up. Please help by donating at Sarah Cawood Channel 4's The Girlie Show, famous for launching the career of the original ladette, Sara Cox, also catapulted Sara Cawood to fame, and she too became a fixture on the walls of teen boys across the country. 21 Heather Suttie & Sarah Cawood presenters for the BBC's Live & Kicking pictured in Ibzia Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd 21 Sarah Cawood at the 2004 Kerrang! Following a battle with breast cancer in 2022, Sarah told The Sun of her regrets, saying 'they were honestly the best boobs — better than Denise Van Outen's, I'd say. So I should have got them out.' These days Sarah, 52, has stepped away from the limelight to focus on her health and her two children. In April she shared a post which said, ''I need to stop drinking. Like stop completely.' She also reflected on her former TV career saying, 'sometimes I wonder what went wrong, but I'm here now so I'm going to make the most of it, however, that looks.' Gail Porter Was there a more iconic image from lad culture in the 90s than the naked body of Gail Porter, projected onto the Houses of Parliament? Arguably not. 21 Cover girl challenge The front cover of FHM magazine showing Gail Porter in the nude Credit: FHM Magazine 21 Gail Porter promoting a motor car in London Credit: Rex 21 Gail Porter, patron of a Scottish charity, at the launch of an affordable lending program Credit: Tom Farmer However, that 1999 stunt for men's magazine FHM, proved to be the beginning of the end for Gail's successful glamour and TV career. The 54 year old, who was famed for presenting shows like Live and Kicking and Top of The Pops, said she wasn't aware of what had happened and later claimed she was never paid for the shoot, despite the publicity helping FHM sell more than one million copies within just two months. Since then Gail has famously lost her hair due to alopecia, has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and fought a battle against drink and drugs and bankruptcy. She was also sectioned under the mental health act in 2011, after texting her then boyfriend to say she was suicidal. Last month Gail, who shares a daughter, Honey, with Toploader guitarist Dan Hipgrave, stepped out at the British LGBT Awards ceremony wearing a long blonde wig, leaving fans praising her 'transformation'. She was famously named Rear of the Year in 2005 and had a successful run presenting shows such as The Big Breakfast and It's A Knockout. She famously 'wed' gay pal Dale Winton in a televised ceremony, which was later revealed to be part of a BBC documentary. Now Nell, 51, spends her time as a fitness guru, who has run several marathons and written a book called Nell McAndrew's Guide to Running.
