Prep Rally: Looking at the best high school defensive linemen in Southern California
Defensive line, in my opinion, is the strongest position in Southern California when it comes to elite players who could make an impact at the college and even NFL level one day.
Tomuhini Topui of Mater Dei is a 320-pound man among boys. He will be the crown jewel in the USC 2026 recruiting class. He's so athletic he'll also be seeing time on Mater Dei's offensive line. But make no mistake about it — he causes havoc in the middle for the Monarchs.
Marcus Fakatou of Orange Lutheran is a 6-foot-7, 265-pound sophomore who continues to grow into his body and becomes meaner every game. Khary Wilder of Gardena Serra is an Ohio State commit who routinely sees double teams. Richard Wesley of Sierra Canyon is a Texas commit and part of a Trailblazers defense that might be best in the Southland. Don't sleep on his teammate, Mikhal Johnson, a two-sport athlete who had 16 tackles for losses.
Dutch Horisk of St. John Bosco and Anthony Jones of Crean Lutheran are committed to Oregon and UCLA, respectively. Elijah Harmon of Inglewood is 280-pound junior with immense potential. Simonte Katoanga has transferred from JSerra to Santa Margarita and is committed to USC.
St. Pius X-St. Matthias has Malik Brooks, a 330-pound USC commit. JD Hill of Mission Viejo is a Northern Arizona commit with improving skills. Devyn Blake of Edison is a 275-pound Sacramento State commit. Elyjah Staples of Marquez had 13 sacks as a sophomore and is the younger brother of UCLA receiver Ezavier Staples. Corona Centennial defensive lineman Kingston Schirmer is a Cal commit.
When it comes to linebackers, there's an impressive list to admire.
Tristan Phillips of Ventura is an Oregon commit and tackling machine. Shaun Scott of Mater Dei is a USC commit with the speed to sack quarterbacks. Samu Moala of Leuzinger is a Texas A&M commit who keeps getting bigger and stronger.
Dash Fifita of Santa Margarita is an Arizona commit who fills up the middle better than anyone even though his 5-9. Isaiah Leilua of Servite and Isaiah Phelps of Oxnard Pacifica who are two juniors ready for big seasons.
Taylor Johnson of Cajon is a USC commit who averaged double-digit tackles. St. John Bosco is filled with quality linebackers, led by UCLA commit Matthew Muasau. Jackson Reach at Mira Costa is a top tackler and long snapper.
Official football practice began on Monday. Senior quarterback Jeremy Pacheco of University was particularly happy. He suffered a season-ending knee injury in the opening game last season. To get back onto the field healthy was something he had worked hard to accomplish.

USC football countdown to kickoff—Travis Dye in focus
The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 26 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we look at former USC running back Travis Dye. Position: Running back Years played at USC: 2022 Career highlights: Dye spent the first four years of his college career at Oregon—even scoring the game-winning touchdown in the 2020 Pac-12 Championship Game against the Trojans. Prior to the 2022 season, Dye transferred to USC for his final year of college eligibility. It did not take him long to make an impact with the Trojans rushing for over 100 yards in five of his first eight games in Cardinal and Gold. Unfortunately, Dye's USC career came to a premature conclusion when he suffered a leg injury during a November game against Colorado that ended his season. Without Dye, the Trojans took down rivals UCLA and Notre Dame, before falling to Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game and Tulane in the Cotton Bowl. Despite playing in just ten games for USC, Dye had a massive impact on the program, as his leadership played a key role in helping the Trojans improve from four wins in 2021 to 11 in 2022. Following his departure, USC was not the same caliber of team the following season. After USC: Unfortunately, Dye's injury prevented him from being able to work out at the NFL Combine, which likely hurt his draft stock. He was not selected in the 2023 NFL Draft. Dye signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent, but was waived prior to the start of the regular season.

Which USC baseball draftees chose to sign professional contracts?
Last month, USC baseball had three players selected in the 2025 MLB draft. Last week marked the deadline for MLB teams to sign their 2025 draftees. With that deadline having passed, we know which players will be turning pro and which will be playing college baseball in 2025. USC made the NCAA Tournament in 2025, snapping a decade-long drought and taking one big step in building back the program. USC won two games and reached the regional final, which meant the Trojans were one of the top 32 teams in the country. USC came close to achieving the kind of season the program should regularly expect. USC baseball tradition was revived. It was progress for a school which owns 12 college baseball national championships. So what is the status of the Trojans' draftees? Let's take a look: Ethan Hedges Hedges was selected in the third round of the draft by the Colorado Rockies. Per SBNation, he signed with Colorado for $950,000, $110,300 below slot value. Caden Hunter Hunter was selected in the sixth round of the draft by the Baltimore Orioles. Per SBNation, he signed with Baltimore for $344,600, under slot value by $2,500. Bryce Martin-Grudzialanek Martin-Grudzialanek was selected in the 20th round of the draft by the New York Yankees. Per SBNation, he signed with New York for $150,000, the maximum allowed for players draft in rounds 11-20 without counting against a team's bonus pool. High school draftee picks the Trojans High school pitcher and USC commit Gavin Lauridsen was selected in the 13th round of the draft by the 13th round of the draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. However, he elected not to sign with Milwaukee and will play for the Trojans next year, a big victory for head coach Andy Stankiewicz and the USC program. Last year's top pick promoted Last year, the Baltimore Orioles selected the USC center fielder in the third round of the draft. Per Jake Dill of the organization is promoting Overn to Double-A Chesapeake this week.

USC linebacker Eric Gentry named named to 2025 Butkus Award watch list
USC Trojans linebacker Eric Gentry is not the traditional prototype for the linebacker position. He stands at 6 foot 6, but he uses every bit of size and length to make him a nightmare for opposing offenses. This senior defensive stud has a lot of experience under his belt playing one year at Arizona State and then three seasons at USC. That experience is why Gentry was named to the Butkus Award watch list. The Butkus Award is given to the best linebacker in the country. If Gentry either wins the award or comes close, USC football will benefit. The central key connected to Eric Gentry in 2025 at USC is that he must stay healthy. Two Gentry seasons have been derailed by injuries. Last season, Gentry had an outstanding month of September but was injured at the end of the month against Wisconsin. His absence was acutely felt as the season moved along. USC lacked the defensive depth needed to be elite. The defense did a good job, given that it was shorthanded, but it remained that USC football was not in good position to win enough games to make the College Football Playoff. If USC is to go 10-2 in 2025 and compete for a playoff spot, Eric Gentry has to be healthy the whole year. Let's see if he can avoid the injury bug and catapult the Trojans to the top tier of the Big Ten. Rob Ryan gets to coach Eric Gentry one year after Matt Entz did a good job with the former ASU Sun Devil. No one should expect a drop-off in coaching quality. Eric Gentry should be great for the Trojans ... as long as his body cooperates.
