SMG wins silver in best digital publisher at MDA D-Award 2025
PETALING JAYA: Star Media Group (SMG) has been awarded silver for 'Best Digital Publisher of the Year' at the MDA D-Awards 2025.
It recognises the group's role in using journalism to accelerate ESG awareness and action through StarESG, its dedicated editorial platform for environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues.
Organised by the Malaysian Digital Association (MDA), the D-Awards has been a pivotal platform to recognise and honour talents, agencies, brands, publishers and digital service providers that adopt and lead in the use of digital technologies.
This award recognition reflects SMG's role as a catalyst in Malaysia's ESG journey – translating complex sustainability issues into accessible, impactful narratives that shape public understanding and support more informed, responsible decisions.
SMG's chief operating officer Lydia Wang said journalism continues to play an important role in informing and supporting progress on key national priorities.
'We see journalism not just as a tool to inform, but a platform to enable progress.
'This award reinforces our commitment to use our reach and credibility to foster thoughtful dialogue, shape greater understanding, and support national ESG goals.
'As a long-standing media organisation, we see it as our responsibility and privilege to support national progress through credible, purposeful storytelling,' she said after the award conferment at One World Hotel yesterday.
SMG senior general manager Elicia Wee said: 'We're deeply honoured by this recognition.
'There has been growing momentum around ESG, and we saw an opportunity to support that movement by offering credible, contextualised insights through StarESG.
'Our goal has always been to make sustainability conversations more accessible – not just through information, but through content that enables clarity, confidence, and meaningful action.'
Since its launch in April 2022, StarESG has grown into Malaysia's leading ESG editorial platform. The platform has published over 350 articles and 30 executive insights, featuring regulatory updates, localised case studies, and global trends.
Its learning arm, StarESG Academy, has trained more than 1,350 professionals, supporting the corporate sector in building ESG literacy and readiness.
In 2024, SMG hosted the inaugural ESG Positive Impact Awards, honouring Malaysian companies for their leadership in sustainability.
Widely regarded as a credible benchmark for ESG excellence, the awards reflect a rigorous evaluation process and strong industry recognition.
That same year, SMG also founded the Asia ESG Positive Impact Consortium (A-EPIC)—a first-of-its-kind regional media alliance with Indonesia's KG Media and the Philippines' Inquirer Group, launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to promote Asean-wide ESG collaboration and accountability.
By embedding purpose into reporting and building an integrated ESG ecosystem, SMG is redefining the role of legacy media — not merely as an observer of change, but as a catalyst for impact.

PM Anwar to champion multilateralism at BRICS Summit in Brazil
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to highlight the critical role of multilateralism and Malaysia's dedication to fostering a balanced, inclusive world order at the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The summit, scheduled for July 6-7, will see Anwar addressing key global challenges, including economic cooperation, artificial intelligence governance, and climate action. Acting Head of Mission at the Malaysian embassy in Brasilia, Datuk Mohammad Ali Selamat, confirmed that Anwar will deliver two key statements during the summit. The first, titled 'Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs and Artificial Intelligence,' will be presented during the session for BRICS partner countries on Sunday. The second, focusing on 'Environment, COP30 and Global Health,' will be delivered on Monday. Mohammad Ali noted that these interventions align with Malaysia's commitment to amplifying the voices of developing nations within global platforms. 'The Prime Minister will stress the need for constructive dialogue and inclusive collaboration, as BRICS serves as a crucial platform for addressing shared challenges like sustainable development and global stability,' he said. Anwar's participation follows his official visit to France and marks his second trip to Brazil, having previously attended the G20 Summit as a guest last year. Both visits were at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. As ASEAN Chair for 2025, Malaysia aims to strengthen ties between ASEAN and BRICS to enhance regional economic cooperation. The summit's theme, 'Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,' resonates with Malaysia's priorities, including digital transformation, AI governance, and equitable trade. Malaysia officially became a BRICS Partner Country on January 1 this year, joining other nations such as Belarus, Bolivia, and Thailand. The BRICS bloc, initially comprising Brazil, Russia, India, and China, has expanded to include South Africa, Egypt, Iran, and the UAE, among others. During his visit, Anwar is also scheduled to meet with Brazil's aerospace giant Embraer, underscoring potential economic collaborations. His delegation includes Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Brazil has grown significantly, reaching RM20.35 billion in 2024, a 14.6% increase from the previous year. Key Malaysian exports include electrical and electronic products, rubber goods, and palm oil-based items, while imports from Brazil feature metalliferous ores, halal meat, and crude petroleum. 'Brazil remains a vital trading partner in Latin America, particularly for E&E and rubber products. Our collaboration in food security and green energy will also be a focus,' Mohammad Ali added. ‘Digital skills must grow alongside facilities'
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia must go beyond developing data centres and ramp up its digital capabilities to stay ahead in a fast-changing global economy, says MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. While the country's data infrastructure is expanding rapidly, he said this growth must be matched with artificial intelligence (AI) development, content creation and the cultivation of local digital talent. 'Accelerating artificial intelligence and developing a skilled digital workforce are essential if Malaysia wants to stay relevant in a fast-evolving digital landscape,' Dr Wee said. He was speaking at the launch of Malaysia's promotion for the Fourth Global Digital Trade Expo (GDTE), to be held from Sept 25 to 29 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. Dr Wee, who attended last year's edition of the GDTE, said Malaysian businesses must now embrace 'new retail' models, blending online and offline operations, and adopt digital tools to expand into regional markets. 'Our goal is to move beyond isolated participation and towards systemic engagement, from individual efforts to integrated platforms,' he said. Since its launch in 2022, the GDTE has drawn over 3,500 companies and international organisations from 123 countries, showcasing innovations across AI, e-commerce, digital health, smart logistics and semiconductor technologies. Dr Wee noted that Malaysian companies have already played active roles at the expo as exhibitors, buyers and online collaborators with Chinese firms, and urged more businesses to tap into the opportunities. He stressed that the global economy has fully entered the digital age, and Malaysian industries from manufacturing and exports to services and innovation must assess whether they are adequately prepared. 'This expo provides a national-level platform for Malaysian businesses to connect with the Chinese market, learn from its digital progress and find areas for complementary cooperation rather than becoming trapped in direct competition,' he said. 'It's about collaboration, learning and unlocking opportunities in a fast-evolving digital landscape.' Meanwhile, Chen Wen, chief representative of the Zhejiang Representative Office in Singapore and South-East Asia, described Malaysia as a digital economy pioneer within Asean, noting the country's progress in e-payments, smart logistics, and digital infrastructure. Chen said Zhejiang, home to tech giants like Alibaba and Hikvision, has led China's digital transformation, recording double-digit growth in its digital economy since it was named China's first National Digital Economy Innovation Development Pilot Zone in 2019. In 2024, Malaysia-Zhejiang bilateral trade reached US$16.89bil (RM79.38bil), up 14.9% from the previous year. As of March, Zhejiang companies had invested in 251 projects in Malaysia, with approved investments totalling US$3.03bil (RM14.24bil). Also speaking at the event was Li Sa, Counsellor for Economic and Commercial Affairs at the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia, who praised Malaysia's strong digital infrastructure, supported by the boom in data centre development and an innovative ecosystem that points to a promising market outlook. She expressed confidence about deeper China–Malaysia cooperation in the digital space and urged Malaysian firms to seize the opportunity to participate in the upcoming GDTE. 'China's development will not crowd out neighbouring markets. Instead, it will create an ever-expanding consumer base for them.' She also extended an invitation to Malaysia to attend the China International Import Expo in Shanghai this November. Also present at the event were Secretary-General of the Zhejiang Provincial Chamber of Foreign Contractors He Yun, Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce president Loo Kok Seong, MCA vice-presidents Datuk Lawrence Low and Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, as well as MCA secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon.

PM Anwar's France visit strengthens Malaysia-EU ties, new deals signed
PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron hailed Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's two-day visit as a success, marking a revival of bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors. The visit included high-level meetings, business engagements, and a keynote speech at Sorbonne University Paris. Macron noted the significance of the visit, the first by a high-ranking Malaysian official in 15 years. He highlighted key agreements, including mineral collaborations and aircraft purchases, as milestones in strengthening France-Malaysia relations. 'This visit is a success. We also heard your speech at the university, and that is a very important moment,' Macron said during a joint press conference at the Elysee Palace. Anwar's lecture at Sorbonne University, titled 'Southeast Asia and Europe: Recalibrating The Terms of Engagement,' called for equal partnerships between the regions. Macron reaffirmed France's commitment to ASEAN, citing his recent visits to Indonesia, Vietnam, and Singapore as part of broader regional engagement. Major deals were sealed during the visit. AirAsia signed a US$12.25 billion agreement for Airbus 321XLR aircraft, with deliveries expected by 2028. Additionally, Petronas expanded its joint ventures with French firms in Latin America and Africa. Anwar also witnessed an MoU between 3P Capital Advisers and Ardian, opening private investment opportunities for Malaysians. French industrial firms Imerys and Arkema pledged further investments in Malaysia, supporting sustainable manufacturing and specialty chemicals. Anwar expressed optimism about Macron's potential visit to Malaysia after the 2025 Francophonie Summit in Cambodia. France remains a top EU trade partner for Malaysia, with bilateral trade reaching RM15.95 billion in 2024.
