Malaysia calls for urgent reforms of UN peacekeeping operations
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that peacekeepers today face emerging challenges, adding that the dynamic geopolitical landscape underscores the importance of continued evolution in UN Peacekeeping.
He said that in that context, Malaysia believes two key shifts are essential to advancing meaningful reform.
'Firstly, equipping our peacekeepers with technologically advanced equipment and weaponry is paramount. The strategic integration of cutting-edge technology into peacekeeping operations serves as a powerful deterrent against hostile entities.
'This integration will significantly enhance our forces' capability to respond swiftly and effectively to emerging threats in peacekeeping missions. A technologically empowered peacekeeping force not only projects strength and moral authority but also reinforces the collective resolve to uphold peace and security,' he said.
Mohamed Khaled said this during his intervention for High-Level Session II - Peacekeeping Reform: More Effective and Safer Peacekeeping during the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025 forum, held here today.
He added that the UN must emphasise capacity-building more because, as a longstanding troop-contributing country, Malaysia strongly believes in the critical importance of training, particularly in areas that enhance interoperability, facilitate knowledge-sharing, and improve peacekeepers' overall safety and effectiveness.
'As missions grow more complex, it is imperative that we invest in training programmes that not only develop core operational competencies but also prepare personnel to integrate and utilise advanced technologies effectively.
'At the same time, we must ensure that our institutional frameworks and policies evolve in tandem with these technological developments. This includes revising operational doctrines, updating standard operating procedures, and establishing clear guidelines for the ethical and responsible use of emerging technologies,' he said.
Mohamed Khaled emphasised that peacekeeping reform lies at the intersection of technology, training, and policy.
'By equipping our peacekeepers with modern tools, investing in comprehensive capacity-building, and ensuring our institutional frameworks remain agile and responsive, we can build a force that is not only operationally ready and effective but also guided by strong values and a deep sense of responsibility,' he said.
The biannual forum brings together the country's top leaders and officials who support the security mission under the UN. Mohamed Khaled took the opportunity to voice his views and renew the country's commitment to supporting the global security effort.

Malaysia supports global effort for Palestinian statehood
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has welcomed the growing international consensus to condemn Israel and support the push for Palestinian statehood. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the recent High‑Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and Implementation of the Two‑State Solution in New York garnered broad backing for the two‑State solution. The meeting also urged urgent and sustained humanitarian aid, along with other supporting measures. "We welcome the international community's shift to condemn Israel and move towards pragmatic, action-oriented measures to resolve the question of granting a Palestinian statehood," he said in a statement on Saturday. Earlier, media reports indicated that the United Kingdom and France are among the latest countries preparing to formally recognise the State of Palestine. To date, more than 145 countries have extended formal recognition to Palestine. Meanwhile, Malaysia has reiterated its strong condemnation of the Israeli Zionist regime's continued atrocities in Gaza, voicing deep concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis. Mohamad said the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, following the relentless genocide and ethnic cleansing perpetrated by Israel, has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians, injured nearly 150,000, and forcibly displaced 1.9 million amid the continued aggression. He said the continued blockade has choked humanitarian aid deliveries, caused severe shortages of food, water and medical supplies, and raising urgent fears of famine, with thousands, especially children, already facing starvation. "We are also deeply alarmed by the unfolding humanitarian crisis that the world has witnessed silently for the past 22 months. "Malaysia reiterates in the strongest terms that the Israeli Zionist regime must stop the killings, cease all attempts at forced displacement of Palestinians, and immediately end all blockade of humanitarian access and ensure unimpeded access of humanitarian aid. "Failure by Israel is a violation of international law, international humanitarian law and international human rights law," he said. Meanwhile, Mohamad urged an investigation into the brutal killings of more than 1,300 Palestinians who were waiting in line to receive aid from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) since late May this year. "These killings are preposterous and must be investigated, with the perpetrators brought to justice," he said. SEREMBAN: The ongoing blockade imposed by Israel in Gaza has severely restricted the delivery of humanitarian assistance, leading to critical shortages of food, clean water, medical supplies and fuel, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan ( pic ). The Foreign Minister said these developments have raised urgent fears of an imminent famine, with starvation and malnutrition already severely affecting thousands of civilians, particularly children. Malaysia to hold online meeting with Cambodia and Thailand
JOHOR BARU: Malaysia is expected to hold an online meeting with Cambodia and Thailand on Saturday (Aug 2) evening to discuss the upcoming General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, says Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. He said he would make individual calls to his Cambodian and Thai counterparts to inform them of Malaysia's readiness to host the bilateral meeting between the two countries. "I will call the defence ministers of both countries separately to express Malaysia's willingness to host the bilateral meeting between Cambodia and Thailand. "After that, once I've spoken to both of them, we will have a Zoom meeting involving all three defence ministers, where we will discuss how to ensure the meeting proceeds smoothly," he said during a press conference at the Pasir Gudang Umno annual meeting here. Mohamed Khaled said the meeting is expected to take place at Wisma Pewira in Kuala Lumpur next week. "Before the GBC meeting, officers from both countries will also hold a separate discussion," he added. In a statement earlier, the Malaysian Armed Forces said it would facilitate the GBC, which will be held in Kuala Lumpur from Aug 4 to 7.
