Hong Kong tourists undeterred by manga prediction that quake will hit Japan on July 5

Hong Kong travel agencies have not recorded widespread cancellations of Japan-bound tour groups for the coming weekend, despite a manga artist's widely-discussed prediction that a mega-earthquake will hit the country on Saturday.
But some business insiders suggested the number of tours this summer was expected to fall by half compared with last year.
The Japan National Tourism Organisation reported that only 193,100 visitors from Hong Kong were recorded coming to the country in May, down by 11.2 per cent from the same month last year.
The quake prediction, which originated from a manga titled The Future That I Saw, Complete Edition, published in 2021, pinpoints July 5 as the date for the mega quake.
In a previous edition of the work first published in 1999, author Ryo Tatsuki had warned of a major disaster in March 2011, a date which turned out to coincide with the cataclysmic earthquake that struck Japan's northern Tohoku region that very month.
Despite Internet chatter on Tatsuki's 'prediction', two prominent Hong Kong travel agencies, EGL Tours and Arrow Travel Agency, told the Post they had not experienced significant cancellations of Hong Kong tour groups set to depart to Japan soon.

Michelin Guide reveals 6 Seoul restaurants to be added to 2026 guide

By Kim Se-jeong Advertisement The Michelin Guide this week revealed six restaurants in South Korea's capital Seoul that will be included in next year's guide. The guide typically announces its full list of starred restaurants for Seoul and Busan every February. 'After the official release of the Michelin Guide, a large number of visitors typically flock in, so we recommend people visit earlier before other gourmets start moving,' the guide said in a statement regarding the early release. The newly named restaurants are Doori, Bium, GiwaKang and Gosari Express, which all serve Korean cuisine; Onyva, a French restaurant; and Sobakeeri Suzu, which specialises in Japanese dishes. At GiwaKang, traditional Korean cuisine is reimagined using French culinary techniques. Woo Guangdong visitors under cross-border scheme, Hong Kong transport chief says

A highly anticipated cross-border driving scheme for Guangdong residents will provide a boost for Hong Kong's tourism-related industries, the transport chief has said, as she called on different sectors to offer a variety of tailored packages linked to hotels, restaurants and events to woo the new source of visitors. Advertisement Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan on Thursday noted the business sector's enthusiasm over the launch of the Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles scheme, which will allow a daily quota of 100 vehicles to enter the city's urban areas via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. 'I am pleased to note the positive response from different sectors, especially the business industry including hotels, catering, retail, AsiaWorld-Expo, and business chambers. They are all very supportive,' she told the media, a day after announcing that the scheme would be launched in November, a month earlier than planned. 'The business sector is actually very quick-witted. Industry players can actively explore launching packages, such as parking combined with accommodation, exhibitions, or other activities and mega-events.' Chan stressed that packages tailor-made for Guangdong drivers would help improve supporting facilities and connections, and inform promotional strategies that would better capitalise on this new group of visitors. Advertisement 'With the package offerings which cater to Guangdong visitors, we can help disseminate relevant information and promote the scheme to the mainland. With our joint efforts we can make this good policy even better,' she said.

From land to sea: top spots to get a glimpse of the Shandong in Hong Kong

Crowds of fans and onlookers gave an emotional welcome to the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong and its accompanying strike group when they sailed into Hong Kong waters on Thursday for a five-day port call. Advertisement Many are seeking alternatives or the best vantage points to view the fleet, as the Shandong is anchored to the west of Victoria Harbour. The other three vessels – the missile destroyers Yan'an and Zhanjiang, and the missile frigate Yuncheng hull number 571 – are moored at the PLA pier on Stonecutters Island. The Post lists five locations or ways to get the best view of the fleet. 1. West Kowloon Cultural District The West Kowloon Cultural District emerged as one of the popular spots recommended by mainland Chinese social media platform RedNote, attracting visitors from overseas. Among them was Kyrin Li Qilin, a 19-year-old aviation management student, who travelled to Hong Kong from Yunnan specifically to see the military fleet. She spent an extra day and about HK$1,000 (US$127) in the city on Thursday while on her way to New Zealand to start a new semester. Onlookers claim their spot as they look out for the Shandong at West Kowloon Cultural Area waterfront. Photo: Jelly Tse 'The American fleet came first, and now the first Chinese-made one also came. I'm very amazed,' she said while taking pictures of the Shandong at West Kowloon waterfront.
