Hugely iconic hatchback set to return next year – three decades after it was discontinued

A MOTOR beloved by petrolheads is making a triumphant return next year, 30 years after it was discontinued. The iconic Lancia Delta HF Integrale has been confirmed for a surprise comeback by the Italian brand, announced alongside the launch of the Ypsilon Rally6 HF Racing. 5 5 5 The Delta is hailed as an icon, celebrated for its rally dominance, striking design and seamless fusion of race-ready performance with everyday road appeal. In its heyday, the Delta was a true hot hatch and today it's a sought-after collector's item, often showcased at car events like the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The model's return - decades after the brand's period of decline - follows the launch of the new Ypsilon last year. Lancia have also confirmed the return of the Gamma, a luxury sedan and coupe built from 1976 to 1984. A high-performance Ypsilon HF - which stands for 'High Fidelity' - was also released last year, featuring a 278bhp electric powertrain shared with its Stellantis siblings, including the Peugeot e-208 GTi, Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce and Abarth 600e. Built on Stellantis's e-CMP platform, it is expected to share underpinnings with the Vauxhall Mokka. To that end, it's highly likely that the new Delta HF Integrale will be an electric set up, although Autocar believes the return of a combustion-engined Delta HF Integrale isn't completely off the table. The original Delta, launched in 1979, started out as a humble family hatchback and the HF and turbocharged HF 4WD didn't arrive until 1983 and 1986 respectively. The Integrale name was later applied to the road car in 1987 when it became a rallying beast. By 1993, demand had pushed Integrale production to nearly 45,000 but it was discontinued in 1994 - although many 'new' hot Deltas have been created since. A brief history of hot hatchbacks Lancia, after years in the doldrums, is also back in rallying with the Ypsilon Rally4 car and the Ypsilon HF Racing, homologated for the entry Rally6. Despite the hype, the rebirth of Lancia isn't going to plan with sales of the new Ypsilon down 72% in May to just 5,627 cars. Stellantis, in general, is facing a difficult period and recently appointed Antonio Filosa as CEO to finally replace Carlos Tavares. This adds more pressure on the upcoming Delta Integrale, with expectations WHEN IT RAINS This week it was also reported that Stellantis may have to shut down some of its factories due to the risk of hefty European Union fines for not complying with CO2 emission targets, the chief of the Franco-Italian automaker for Europe said on Tuesday. The automaker industry has successfully lobbied for more time to comply, as fines will be based on 2025-2027 emissions rather than just in 2025. Stellantis' Europe chief Jean-Philippe Imparato slammed the targets, saying they were still unreachable for automakers, Automotive News reports. He then exposed his company to fines of up to 2.5 billion euros within "two-three years." review the situation.

Where Diogo Jota's car crashed: The road described by locals as one of worst in Spain where Liverpool star tragically swerved off the road

The road where Diogo Jota tragically crashed had previously been described as one of the worst in Spain. The Liverpool star, 28, careered off a road in northern Spain in his Lamborghini - just two weeks after he married his childhood sweetheart. The Portuguese forward was travelling in the supercar with his fellow footballer and younger brother Andre, 26, who also died in the crash. The Lamborghini's tyre is believed to have blown out while overtaking on the A-52 at Cernadilla near Zamora in northwestern Spain, close to the border with Portugal. But the road is renowned for being an area of 'irresponsible driving', totting up nearly 15,000 speeding fines in 2020, it was reported in La Opinion de Zamora. Four years ago, a campaign was launched to help control the speeding issue and bring awareness to the zones where people speed or there are frequent accidents. With its sharp curves and frequent wildlife crossings, the A-52 is often cited as one of the worst to drive on. A recent poll by Spain's Organisation of Users and Consumers found that drivers believed the A-52 was one of the worst routes in all of Spain, highlighting the condition of the roads as well as the lack of safety barriers. The excessive amount of roadworks at the time was also a huge concern for the 1,259 drivers that were quizzed. The region Zamora is also known for its rugged terrain with the A-52 running through mountainous and forested areas. The area also suffers from recurrent fog spells and limited lighting. In spite of the tricky terrain, the Spanish road is a key route taken by drivers after leaving northern Portugal as they head for the ports of Santander and Bilbao or drive north-east towards France. The footballer's supercar came off the road in the early hours of this morning, when it rolled and then burst into flames. The emergency services were called but the brothers could not be saved. Liverpool FC said in a statement that the club is 'devastated' by the tragedy and that Diogo's family, friends and fans had suffered an 'unimaginable loss'. Jota had just married Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children and partner since the age of 16. He had described himself as the luckiest man in the world to be her husband, sharing moving footage of their wedding day in his final Instagram post on Wednesday afternoon. The couple married on June 22 in Porto, the footballer's home city. Rute shared more wedding day pictures in a social media post yesterday and said: 'My dream come true.' Jota replied in the comments: 'I'm the lucky one.' Diogo's brother Andre, 26, was also a footballer and died in the crash Diogo's new wife Rute shared more wedding day pictures in a social media post yesterday and said: 'My dream come true.' Jota replied in the comments: 'I'm the lucky one.' Emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region confirmed the crash and two fatalities at around 12.35am on Thursday morning. Diogo and Andre's deaths were confirmed by the Portuguese Football Federation. Jota was part of Liverpool's Premier League-winning side in the 2024/25 campaign, scoring six goals in 26 appearances. He also played for Portugal's national team and helped it win the Nations League last month in an extraordinary win over rivals Spain on penalties. Diogo was born Diogo Silva, but changed his surname to Jota to stand out because it is a common surname. His brother Andre kept the family name.
