It is a day to cherish for New Zealand driver Liam Lawson, who has nailed his best qualifying perfomance of the Formula 1 season.
He will start sixth on the grid for Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix, one place behind his career-best performance, which was fifth in Singapore last year.
Lawson will also take satisfaction on finishing one spot ahead of his former Red Bull team mate Max Verstappen, and his relief to finally show he is a capable driver was evident after the session concluded.
"Everything's felt really good, I've felt really good and we've done a lot of work on the car and on my side as well, just to make it more comfortable for me.
"It's nice to show it today, but obviously tomorrow is obviously the important day."
The day did not start so well for Lawson, as he finished 11th-fastest in the third practice session.

But with his team continuing to fine tune his car, things clicked just when everyone was looking for him to deliver.
Lawson was third-fastest in the first qualiyfing phase, then ninth in the second, to ensure he would be lining up his Racing Bulls car in the final qualification, where he sealed his top six finish.
"The last couple of weekends the pace has been there through practice, just in quali it wasn't ... so it's cool to get it across the line," Lawson said.
McLaren's Lando Norris was the fastest driver to secure pole position, ahead of Ferrari driver Charles LeClerc and Australian and championship leader Oscar Piastri.
Norris, who needs a strong result after a collision with Piastri in Canada two weeks ago, is 22 points behind the Australian in the championship after 10 of 24 races.
"I did what I planned to do and when I plan to do something and it goes right, it normally goes very, very well," said Norris, whose pole time of one minute 03.971 seconds was 0.521 quicker than Leclerc's lap.
"The feeling I had today was a feeling I've missed for quite a long time, the feeling I have behind the wheel, in the car, the understanding of where the grip is and how to exploit it. That showed, gaining performance and in lap time."
It was the biggest gap so far this season between first and second on the grid and the pole was the Briton's third of the campaign, after Australia and Monaco where he won both races with the fastest lap.
"Lando has been very quick all weekend and it would have been a tough challenge (to beat him) but I think we easily had enough pace in the car this weekend to be on the front row," said Piastri.
"But we still have some opportunities tomorrow. I'm not planning on finishing third, that's for sure."
George Russell, last year's race winner, qualified fifth for Mercedes and kept the place after stewards gave him a warning for a pitlane breach.
Austrian Grand Prix qualifying results: 1: Lando Norris (McLaren), 2: Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), 3: Oscar Piastri (McLaren), 4: Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari), 5: George Russell (Mercedes), 6: Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls), 7: Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing), 8: Gabriel Bortoleto (Kick Sauber), 9: Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), 10: Pierra Gasly (Alpine).

Lawson wins points in best result of season

Liam Lawson smiles after finishing sixth in the Austrian Grand Prix. Liam Lawson managed to avoid a first lap pile up in the Austrian Grand Prix to record his best ever result in Formula 1. Lawson finished sixth with the race won by McLaren's Lando Norris. After his best qualifying performance of the season of sixth, Lawson just managed to escape a crash between Mercedes Kimi Antonelli and Red Bull's four-time world champion Max Verstappen on the first corner which forced both drivers out of the race. The 23-year-old Kiwi did slip to ninth at one stage, but a one stop strategy by the Racing Bulls team helped him climb back up the field. He spent much of the race defending his position from Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso. Lawson picked up eight points adding to the four he collected in Monaco which means he is now 15th in the standings. Despite his team-mate Isack Hadjar finishing out of the points, Racing Bulls have improved to sixth in the constructors' championship. Norris won the race from pole position in a McLaren one-two after fending off championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri in an early wheel-to-wheel duel and then withstanding intense pressure to the end. The Briton's third victory of the season cut Australian Piastri's Formula One lead from 22 to 15 points after 11 of 24 rounds, with the two McLaren drivers locked in an increasingly private title battle. Charles Leclerc completed the podium for Ferrari with team mate Lewis Hamilton fourth and George Russell, last year's winner in Austria, fifth for Mercedes. Antonelli was given a three place grid penalty at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone next weekend for causing the accident with Verstappen. Verstappen's first retirement of the season means he stays third overall but is now 61 points behind Piastri. Alex Albon, Verstappen and Antonelli all failed to finish while Carlos Sainz didn't start. McLaren top the contructors' standings with 417 points, Ferrari have 210 and Mercedes 209. - RNZ / Reuters

Kiwi rower scores shock win in Switzerland

Men's Single Sculls Logan Ullrich of New Zealand Photo: © Rowing NZ 2025 / PHOTOSPORT Another lucrative outing for New Zealand rowers at the second World Cup regatta in Switzerland. The four New Zealand crews in the A-finals in Lucerne all picked up medals with Logan Ullrich scoring his maiden single sculls win. The men's pair and double both finished second with the women's four third. Two weeks ago Ullrich failed to make the A-final at the opening World Cup regatta, a week ago he was hitting impressive numbers on the erg and today, after just six races at international level in the single sculls, he won gold. Ullrich is in the single this year after winning an Olympic silver medal in the four last year. "I've dreamed about this for years," he told World Rowing. "I didn't think it would come this quickly in my sculling career, I'm just blown away." Coach Mike Rodger, who mentored Emma Twigg to her successful Olympic campaigns, was also blown away by Ullrich's rapid rise. "He's phenomenal," Rodger said. "You've got to remember he hasn't really rowed a single at all, but because he's so green, he just takes everything in, listens and makes the changes." Ben Mason and Finn Hamill again showed their ability to attack over the second half of the race to win silver in the Men's Double. The duo had only raced together three times before this weekend, but are now being talked about as one of the crews to watch ahead of the World Championships in China in September. Men's Pair Ben Taylor and Oli Welch were pipped by Romania's experienced combination of Florin Lehaci and Florin Arteni, the current European champions. The Women's Four overcame illness earlier on their tour of Europe to grab bronze.
