Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif feels Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket due to a lack of support from the management or the selectors. Kaif added that Kohli was very much interested in continuing his Test career and whatever happened behind the scenes led to his sudden retirement.
Kohli, who is known for his love for Test cricket, stunned the cricketing world after calling it quits in Test cricket on 12 May, a little over one month before the five-match Test series in England. Kohli retired just a few days after Rohit Sharma also decided to retire from Test cricket.

'Kohli did not get BCCI's support'
Kaif, however, is not convinced Kohli took the decision on his own . He feels the lack of support the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee forced him to retire from tests, as by playing in the Ranji Trophy match for Delhi earlier, the 36-year-old had shown that he was ready to continue in the five-day format .
'I think he wanted to continue in the format. There must have been some internal talks with the BCCI, the selectors may have cited his form in the past 5-6 years and told him his spot in the team may no longer be there. We will never find out what happened, it is very difficult to guess what actually took place behind the scenes,' Kaif told news agency IANS.
'But given the last minute decision, having played the Ranji trophy, I definitely think he wanted to come back in the upcoming Tests. The developments in the last few weeks, he may have not gotten the support he thought he will get from BCCI and selectors which he may not have gotten,' he added.
Poor Australia tour could have driven Kohli to retirement
Further explaining Kohli's decision, Kaif added that the poor performance in Australia, where he constantly got out in slips, must have also played a role.
'In the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, he looked in a hurry to score runs. You have to stay out for hours and grind in Test cricket, which he has done in the past but the constant edging of the ball moving away from him while attempting to drive, made me feel his patience was a bit less,' Kaif said.
'Maybe he was thinking 'I am in the last phase of my career what's the point of scoring a gritty century, there used to be a different level of patience on display from him before, he used to leave the balls, take his time, tire the bowlers and then took them down but I did not see that from him in Australia'.'

'That one method of dismissal at the slips perhaps shows that he was not ready to spend hours at the crease. The communication from BCCI and the self-realization in red-ball cricket may have led to the decision,' he added.
Kohli scored just 190 runs in nine innings at 23.75 on the Australia tour.

PCB Chief Writes To BCCI Over Asia Cup: Report. Response Will Be Out By...

Team India's participation in the 2025 Asia Cup remains an uncertainity, with less than two months remaining for the start of the tournament. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hasn't ruled out the team's participation, it has also not confirmed the same. While BCCI continues to remain tight-lipped on the matter, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has reportedly written an email to the Indian board, highlighting concerns over the "sponsors and broadcasters" missing out on commercial deals. "We have been informed that in the absence of this information, their ability to plan effectively, allocate resources, and execute their campaigns is significantly constrained. In addition, to highlighting the challenges being faced by them, the media rights partner has highlighted obligations under the Agreement which commence 60 and 90 days prior to the commencement of the 2025 Tournament. Our sponsorship rights partner, TCM, have outlined the commercial concerns associated, particularly in terms of timelines required for effective monetization and activation planning," ACC wrote in its letter to the BCCI, as per a report in Times Now. "In addition, given the proximity of other major ICC and international events, both Sony and TCM have raised concerns that further delays could result in missed commercial opportunities that may not be recoverable due to existing scheduling and lead-time limitations. In light of this, and importantly, with fixtures for other major tournaments now confirmed, we are hoping to alleviate the concerns of our rights holders finalize the Asia Cup fixtures within this week. This is especially important for the ACC as the Men's Asia Cup is the main source of income for the organization. We believe that further delays may pose the risk of our partners claiming breaches of Agreement and seeking discount," the letter added. The report added that ACC's action could lead to a swift response from the BCCI, as early as next week. Recently, a promo of the upcoming Asia Cup appeared during the coverage of the 1st Test between England and India. However, there was no mention of the dates and venues. ACC is currently headed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who succeeded ex-BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who is now the chairman of the International Cricket Council.

IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: ‘Kuldeep Yadav should bat at No. 3' - Bold advice from cricket expert

India's decision to leave out from the playing XI for the second Test against England at Edgbaston has drawn sharp criticism, with former India pacer Dodda Ganesh delivering one of the most scathing reactions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Taking to X, Ganesh remarked, ' Kuldeep should bat in top 3 for Uttar Pradesh in the #RanjiTrophy and get some runs, to be picked to play for India in the tests. I don't see any other way he can force his way back into this setup where one's secondary skill dictates the team selection .' The comment, dripping with sarcasm, reflected the widespread frustration over India's growing reliance on all-rounders at the expense of pure specialists. Kuldeep, who last played a Test in 2024 against New Zealand, has featured in just 13 Tests since his 2017 debut despite consistently impressive returns whenever selected. His omission has puzzled fans and experts alike, especially after the left-arm wrist-spinner picked up key wickets in recent matches and showed signs of being in red-hot form. EXCLUSIVE | David Gower on Shubman Gill, Bumrah & India's England Tour Former Australia captain Aaron Finch also joined the chorus of criticism, writing: ' If Bumrah was fit to play then surely you need to pick the best bowler in the world? At the very least Kuldeep has to be in the XI if you're worried about taking 20 wickets. Yes, he might be more expensive but he's the next best attacking option!' Captain Shubman Gill defended the decision, citing a need to bolster the batting after lower-order collapses in the previous Test. ' We were very tempted to play him... but we wanted to add a bit of depth in the batting, ' Gill told Michael Atherton at the toss. Poll Do you think India is over-relying on all-rounders in their Test squad? Definitely, it's a concerning trend Not really, it's a balanced approach But with India needing to take 20 wickets to stay alive in the series, leaving Kuldeep out has only intensified the heat on the team's selection strategy.
