Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth rails against NFL's reliance on analytics: 'Just a bunch of fluff'
Three-time Super Bowl winner and FOX Sports NFL analyst Mark Schlereth weighed in on the debate. Schlereth, who played in the NFL long before analytics were introduced, expressed his distaste for the usage of metrics.
"There's one thing for me. It's the analytics people. … (They) become gospel," Schlereth said during a recent appearance on OutKick's "Don't @ Me w/ Dan Dakich."
"Because you take those numbers, and you can make them say whatever you want. … And the average fan thinks that becomes gospel. They don't understand how the game works, so this is a way you can basically go, 'OK, let me put my thumbprint on this' the air yards per target or whatever bulls--- they're feeding you as an analytics number-crunching nerd."
All 32 NFL teams had a designated analytics employee on their staffs last season.
ESPN anonymously surveyed each of those staffers in 2024 to learn more about how teams used analytics. Some teams lean more into analytics than others, while some general managers' backgrounds could make them more prone to take an analytics-first approach.
The survey received 22 responses. The findings named the Cleveland Browns as the No. 1 NFL franchise to incorporate analytics most frequently when it comes to making decisions on football-related matters. Browns general manager Andrew Berry holds a master's degree from Harvard in computer science. Berry works with Paul DePodesta, the Browns' chief strategy officer.
Before joining the Browns, DePodesta worked in the front office of multiple MLB teams and appeared in the film "Moneyball."
Schlereth also recalled a time when he had a heated debate over the usage of analytics.
"I got into an argument with a guy that was extolling the virtues of going for two points every time. …. So, I asked the guy, 'Let me ask you a question, how many two-point plays do you think we go into a given (game) with?'"
Schlereth then said two plays were the standard when he played. He proceeded to explain how his teams would practice the plays and the coach's approach to implementing any of the plays in a game.
"You have no idea how the game works. You have no idea what we talk about. You have no idea how we practice. You have no idea the number of plays we have in or how we run those plays or what we're trying to exploit."
Schlereth described analytics as "fluff."
"The analytics don't mean anything in football. It's just a bunch of fluff to make us feel important, like we as 'analytics analysts' really know what we're talking about."

Lions could pull off league-altering trade with Cowboys for Micah Parsons
The Detroit Lions are in desperate need of pass-rushing help, and the team could orchestrate a league-altering trade with the Dallas Cowboys for All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons. For The Win's Charles Curtis lists the Lions as one of the top six landing spots for Parsons, who could force his way out of Dallas soon. "The Super Bowl window is open in Motor City. "The two sides remain far apart heading into the second week of training camp, and are not currently negotiating." It's shocking that the Cowboys aren't willing to pay Parsons his desired contract. Since entering the league in 2021, the 26-year-old has tallied four straight double-digit sack campaigns and has earned four Pro Bowl selections and two first-team All-Pro nods. If Dallas decides to trade away Parsons, Detroit would be a logical landing spot. Pairing Aidan Hutchinson with Parsons on the Lions' defensive line would be lethal, and the move would elevate the Lions into the clear favorites in the NFC North and possibly the entire conference. Trading for the Penn State product and giving him a lucrative extension will be challenging, especially with Hutchinson also seeking a long-term deal. However, general manager Brad Holmes would be foolish not to look into a trade for Parsons, as the 2021 No.12 overall pick is a generational talent, and those types of players don't come on the trade market often. It still seems unlikely that Parsons won't be with the Cowboys for the foreseeable future, but with how the relationship looks between both sides right now, the chances of him leaving Dallas have skyrocketed. Chargers acquire Micah Parsons in proposed deal that sends Cowboys Najee Harris
Dallas Cowboys star linebacker Micah Parsons has not only requested a trade out of Dallas but also issued a statement saying he no longer wants to play there. Parsons is looking for an extension that his play on the field has shown he deserves, but Jerry Jones and the Cowboys have yet to grant his request. Now, they could decide to trade him instead. While many landing spots and trade possibilities have been discussed since the news of his trade request broke, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report has come up with a deal that sends Parsons to the Los Angeles Chargers. Here are the details of his proposed deal: Chargers receive: Micah Parsons, 2027 4th-round pickCowboys receive: 2026 1st-round pick, 2026 2nd-round pick, 2027 1st-round pick, 2027 5th-round pick, Najee Harris This would be a lot to give up for the Chargers, but Parsons, one of the best defensive players in the league, commands this price. The Chargers would then need to sign him to a contract extension as his deal expires at the end of this season. "The Los Angeles Chargers, presumably, are looking to continue trending upward under new head coach Jim Harbaugh. L.A. saw a six-win improvement last season while fielding the league's No. 1 scoring defense. This offseason, Los Angeles bolstered its offense by adding players like Najee Harris, Omarion Hampton and Tre Harris. Hampton, a first-round running back out of North Carolina, is expected to lead Los Angeles' rushing attack. That doesn't necessarily make Harris expendable. The former Pittsburgh Steelers standout still has "no timeline" for returning from an eye injury either, according to The Athletic's Daniel Popper. Broncos sign LB Garret Wallow, cut CB Mario Goodrich
The Broncos have found themselves with a need at linebacker during training camp, and they've signed Garret Wallow to give themselves some depth at the position. Wallow arrives after injuries to Broncos linebackers Alex Singleton, Dre Greenlaw and Drew Sanders. The 26-year-old Wallow most recently played for the Titans in 2023. He missed the entire 2024 season with a torn pectoral. He was originally a 2021 fifth-round draft pick of the Texans who played in 32 games in Houston, with five starts. He also has played a lot on special teams, and that might be his best chance of making the Broncos' regular-season roster. To make room for Wallow on the roster, the Broncos waived cornerback Mario Goodrich, who signed in June after playing in the UFL.
