
Turbidity of the Khandepar swells after downpour rage
The incessant rain in the catchment areas of Khandepar and Kalem rivers during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday has raised the turbidity of raw water in the Khandepar river.
The Opa Water Works recorded river water turbidity of 325 NTU (nephelometric turbidity unit) on Friday afternoon.
Turbidity refers to opaqueness or cloudiness. Water containing 1mg of finely divided silica per litre has a turbidity of 1 NTU and up to 50 NTU is considered normal.
However, data shows that such a high rise in turbidity has been seen far earlier this year as compared to the past eight years.
Sunil Kerkar, an assistant engineer of the department of drinking water said the early arrival of the monsoon contributed to the spike in turbidity.
Kerkar said that the phenomenon is common during heavy rainfall. He said silt washes off from catchment areas and pours into river water, leading to high turbidity.
Sometimes consumers too get turbid water.
'Water is released to consumers only after proper filtration is carried out at Opa water treatment plants,' Kerkar said.
After raw water is drawn into a receiving chamber from a river, it flows into sedimentation tanks to allow silt to settle.

Twin rivers receding, 16 wards still affected
1 2 Prayagraj: Even as water level of twin rivers, Ganga and Yamuna, is receding rapidly, as many as 16 wards /mohallahs, including 10 in Sadar, four in Phulpur, and two in Karchana blocks are still affected. Transportation in six villages including Dokri Uparhar, Sonauti, Badra, Badkar, Dehli Bhagesar and Hathsara are also affected. Over 220 people from 43 families have currently taken shelter at flood relief camps. Officials of the flood control department claimed that there was a receding trend noticed in the twin rivers on Tuesday, offering a respite to residents of low-lying areas and the administration alike. At 8 am, the water level of the Yamuna was recorded at 81.89 m, having dropped 70 cm. At 12 noon and 4 pm, the water level of the Yamuna was recorded at 81.83 m and 81.79 m, respectively. The water level of the Ganga followed a similar trend. At 8 am, the water level of the Ganga at Phaphamau and Chhatnag was recorded at 82.26m and 81.38m, respectively. IITM set to launch WiFEX-II to improve winter fog forecasts for airports in north India
Pune: The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) is set to launch WiFEX-II, building on its decade-long Winter Fog Experiment to deliver precise, runway-specific fog forecasts to more airports in north India. This will enable airport operators to activate response protocols, ensuring safe operations during low-visibility conditions along major aviation corridors. Under the expanded programme, dedicated sensors would be installed at new airport locations, providing real-time data to support operational decision-making during the winter fog season, which often disrupts aviation in the Indo-Gangetic Plain. Building on the success of WiFEX, launched in 2015 at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, the programme has developed a high-resolution fog prediction model with over 85% accuracy for dense fog conditions (visibility under 200 metres). IITM scientists said the system could forecast fog onset, density, duration and clearance patterns. "WiFEX data has enabled more accurate forecasting that helps reduce flight diversions, delays and operational disruptions during north India's winter months when dense fog severely impacts aviation, rail and road transport," an IITM scientist said. The ministry of earth sciences announced the WiFEX milestone during an event at IITM's Aryabhatta Hall, which included the launch of a website, screening of a documentary marking 10 years of WiFEX and a press briefing by Dr M Ravichandran, secretary MoES, and IITM director Dr A Suryachandra Rao. The programme also featured visits to the state-of-the-art atmospheric chemistry laboratory and Safar WiFEX control room for briefings on air quality monitoring activities.
