Trump envoy Witkoff to travel to Europe and discuss Gaza, US official says
Axios reported that Witkoff is expected to depart for Rome on Wednesday and arrive on Thursday for a meeting with Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer and a senior Qatari envoy.

If sufficient progress is made, Witkoff will travel from Rome to Doha toward the end of the week to secure a deal, the news website reported, citing a U.S. and an Israeli source.

Talks on a proposal for a 60-day Gaza ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas are being mediated by Qatar and Egypt with Washington's backing while the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave from U.S. ally Israel's military assault continues to mount.
The ongoing war in Gaza has seen two ceasefires thus far, the most recent of which ended after two months when Israeli strikes killed over 400 Palestinians on March 18.

Oil rises on US-EU trade deal
NEW YORK: Oil prices rose 2% on Monday after a trade deal between the US and the European Union, and US President Donald Trump's announcement that he would shorten the deadline for Russia to end its war in Ukraine or face sanctions. Brent crude futures were up $1.36, or 2%, at $69.80 a barrel by 10:58 a.m. EDT (1458 GMT), while US West Texas Intermediate crude rose $1.33, or 2%, at $66.49. Brent touched its highest price in 10 days after Trump said he was reducing the 50-day deadline he gave Russia over its war in Ukraine to 10-12 days. The deal between the US and EU and a possible extension of the US-China tariff pause are also supporting global financial markets and oil prices, said Tony Sycamore, a market analyst at IG. The framework trade pact with the EU announced on Sunday sets a 15% US import tariff on most EU goods. 'Not only does it (the trade pact) give US producers a huge boost with this commitment, it also puts more pressure on (Russian President Vladimir) Putin to come to the table.' Senior US and Chinese officials are meeting in Stockholm on Monday to try to extend their tariff truce before an August 12 deadline.

India's defence minister rejects Trump's ceasefire claim
NEW DELHI: India's defence minister said on Monday that New Delhi had ended its military conflict with Pakistan in May as it had met all its objectives and had not responded to pressure, rejecting US President Donald Trump's claim that he brokered the truce. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was speaking at the opening of a discussion in parliament on the April 22 attack on Hindu tourists in IIOJK in which 26 men were killed. The attack led to a fierce, four-day military conflict with Pakistan in May, the worst between the nuclear-armed neighbours in nearly three decades. 'India halted its operation because all the political and military objectives studied before and during the conflict had been fully achieved,' Singh said. 'To suggest that the operation was called off under pressure is baseless and entirely incorrect,' he said. Singh's comments came as the Indian Army said that it had killed three men in an intense gun battle in IIOJK on Monday. Indian TV channels said the men were suspected to be behind the April attack. Reuters could not immediately verify the information. Indian opposition groups have questioned what they say is the intelligence failure behind the Kashmir attack and the government's inability to capture the assailants - issues they are expected to raise during the parliament discussion. They have also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for coming under pressure from Trump and agreeing to end the fighting, along with reports that Indian jets were shot down during the fighting. Pakistan claimed it downed five Indian planes in combat, and India's highest ranking general told Reuters that India suffered initial losses in the air, but declined to give details.
