Leipzig and Berlin to present Olympic bid plans on May 27
The cities of Leipzig and Berlin will present their plans to bid for the 2040 Olympics on May 27, Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung said during a debate in the city council, according to Friday's edition of the Leipziger Volkszeitung newspaper.
The discussion focused on the Red Bull arena's forecourt and the framework plan for the area around the stadium. A hall for ball games with 5,000 seats is to be built there.

The existing Quarterback-Immobilien-Arena, home to the handball club SC DHfK Leipzig, is to be expanded to 12,000 seats. The construction of a parking lot and other infrastructure improvements are also planned, and the framework plan has been approved.
"We want to get Leipzig ready for big sports events and that also explicitly includes an Olympic bid. For that, we need an infrastructure that already today thinks about the tomorrow," city councillor Christina März was quoted by the newspaper.

MLB interested in players participating in LA Olympics, but Games' baseball schedule puts league in July bind
With the 2028 Olympics taking place in Los Angeles, Major League Baseball is interested in its players participating rather than giving way to amateurs like they've previously done. But the LA Olympics baseball schedule puts MLB in a July 2028 bind. Advertisement Baseball, which has not been included in three of the past four Summer Olympics, is scheduled for July 15-20 during the 2028 iteration of the Games, and Dodger Stadium will host, as announced Monday by LA28, the competition's organizing body. Mid-July, of course, is typically when MLB holds its annual All-Star Game. A host city hasn't been announced for the 2028 All-Star Game and its festivities, and neither have corresponding dates, but a potential scheduling conflict is already apparent. If the 2028 All-Star Game follows the cadence of past midsummer classics, it could land right before the Olympic opening ceremony on July 14, as reported by The Athletic's Evan Drellich. In other words, an extended All-Star break could cause a longer pause in the 2028 MLB regular season than the league prefers. "They put out a schedule, they tell you it's not going to move," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said Tuesday before this year's All-Star Game, via The Athletic. "We'll see whether there's any movement on that. … It is an opportunity to market the game on a really global stage. We're trying to iron through those logistics." MLB met with Los Angeles organizers Monday in Atlanta ahead of this year's All-Star Game, according to The Associated Press, which also reported that Manfred said Olympic officials were meeting with the MLBPA. Advertisement "There's a lot of work that still needs to be done," MLBPA Executive Director Tony Clark told the Baseball Writers' Association of America in a separate interview, per the AP. "We do know players are interested in playing, whether it's for the Team USA or any number of other teams around the world. ... There's just a lot of conversation that needs to be had sooner rather than later to see how viable this is, but we're hopeful that we can figure our way through it for the benefit of the game." Manfred mentioned that MLB clubs are going to have to "endorse" their players taking part in the 2028 Olympics. "I mean, it's a big deal," he said, according to the AP. Advertisement The last time the Summer Olympics included baseball was in 2021 when Tokyo hosted the Games. MLB didn't permit players on 40-man rosters to participate. Meanwhile, Nippon Professional Baseball — Japan's top professional baseball league — halted play, and Japan defeated USA 2-0 in the gold medal game. Both The Athletic and the AP reported that Manfred said a single, extended All-Star break that allows for Olympic participation while still fitting in a 162-game regular-season and a postseason that doesn't go too deep into November is possible. He added, however, that such a plan would "require significant accommodations." Of those accommodations, potential changes to television contracts could be in order, as the league has to consider Fox's All-Star Game broadcasting rights.

Caitlin Clark will compete in WNBA 3-point contest with Allisha Gray, Sabrina Ionescu and others
Caitlin Clark will make her 3-point contest debut in Indianapolis in front of her home fans on All-Star Friday night. Clark declined to participate in an NBA All-Star event earlier this year, electing to save her first All-Star skills appearance for the WNBA's signature weekend; despite recent injuries that have cost her 10 games, Clark will be one of five entrants in the 3-point shootout. Clark will face off against reigning champion Allisha Gray, all-time record-holder Sabrina Ionescu (37 points in the final round in 2023) and fellow All-Stars Kelsey Plum and Sonia Citron. Ionescu did not defend her title in 2024, electing to rest ahead of the Paris Olympics. Both she and Gray are 1-for-1 in the shootout, while Plum finished last in her first appearance in 2022. Plum, Ionescu and Gray are third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in 3-pointers made per game in 2025. Advertisement Friday night will also include the WNBA skills challenge, featuring All-Stars Gray, Skylar Diggins and Courtney Williams, plus Natasha Cloud and Erica Wheeler. Gray is also defending her crown in this event after pulling off the historic double in Phoenix in 2024. This is Gray's third year participating in the skills challenge, which debuted in 2019. Cloud, Diggins and Williams are all new to the event. Wheeler is as well, though she was scheduled to participate in 2024 before a canceled flight forced her then-teammate Kelsey Mitchell to perform in her place. Wheeler spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons with the Fever and could be a fan favorite in this event, though Diggins is from Indiana. This is the second year that Aflac will be providing additional prize money to the winners of each event. The CBA stipulates that each winner gets $2,575, but Aflac will be adding $55,000 for the skills challenge and $60,000 for the 3-point shootout, equivalent to the purse in the NBA All-Star events. In 2024, the decision was made the week of the event, leaving many players unaware in time. Several players said that a bigger prize pool would incentivize participation, which seems to be validated in the number of All-Stars in this year's lineup. All-Star Friday night tips off at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. This article originally appeared in The Athletic. WNBA 2025 The Athletic Media Company

The LA Olympics baseball schedule is out — and it's not perfect for MLB
ATLANTA — In Major League Baseball's ideal world, the schedule for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles would look different. For the first time, MLB wants its players to participate in the games, rather than leaving the competition to amateurs. Baseball at the Olympics in '28 is set for July 15-20 at Dodger Stadium, the competition's organizing body, LA28, announced on Monday. But that isn't ideal for MLB, which also wants to host its All-Star Game in mid-July 2028 as it normally does and avoid a break that greatly extends the length of the season. Advertisement The league hasn't announced a date or host city for the '28 All-Star Game yet, but All-Star Games typically fall on a mid-July Tuesday, making July 11, 2028 a likely date. That would be three days before the Olympics' opening ceremony on July 14, potentially creating a longer downtime than the league or players want. 'They put out a schedule, they tell you it's not going to move,' commissioner Rob Manfred said Tuesday before this year's Midsummer Classic. 'We'll see whether there's any movement on that. … It is an opportunity to market the game on a really global stage. We're trying to iron through those logistics.' A preferred path for MLB could be starting Olympic baseball games sooner. It's unclear if MLB would consider moving the All-Star Game, but the league also has to factor in its obligations to FOX, which broadcasts the game. 'It is possible to play the All-Star Game in its normal spot, have a single break that would be longer, obviously, but still play 162 games without bleeding into the middle of November,' Manfred said. 'That is possible, OK? It would require significant accommodations, but it's possible.' MLB met with LA28 on Monday. Manfred said he is particularly interested in having MLB participate in these Olympics because the logistics are easier to pull off domestically. 'That process continues forward in a positive way,' Manfred said. 'That's the best I can tell you right now. Obviously, the clubs are going to have to endorse this. I mean, it is a big deal.' LA28 did not immediately return a request for comment. Manfred said the league will have upcoming talks with the Players Association as well. MLBPA executive director Tony Clark said Tuesday that players are interested, but that a lot of details remain unclear. 'In the event that major-league players are going to play, what does that mean, and what does that look like?' Clark said. 'And perhaps just as importantly, what does it mean for those players who aren't participating? What type of scheduling adjustments need to be made, what type of travel considerations and support need to be considered? What does that mean in regards to insurance? 'There's just a lot of conversation that needs to be had sooner rather than later to see how viable this is, but we're hopeful that we can figure our way through it for the benefit of the game.'
