Neglect threatens to turn park into dumping ground

SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Indian Association (SIA) (Baru) Patron, Taren Sunil Manoharan, has urged the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) and relevant authorities to prioritise the maintenance of Ujana Elopura Recreational Park, warning that neglect could reduce the park to a potential dumpsite. Located at Mile 2.5 North Road, the parkformerly known as Padang Baru was converted from a football field into a community park equipped with jogging tracks and other amenities. 'Ujana Elopura is one of the few remaining green lungs in Sandakan. It's disheartening to see it slowly deteriorate,' Taren said, pointing to clogged drains, litter-strewn areas and overgrown grass as signs of poor maintenance. He noted that while public responsibility plays a role, the authorities must ensure adequate facilities such as rubbish bins, prompt collection services and regular upkeep of the grounds. 'Once the rot sets in, it's much harder to fix,' he said. He emphasised that he lack of regular maintenance, including unmanaged grass and garbage, could turn the area into a breeding ground for mosquitoes and pests, worsening Sandakan's ongoing dengue situation. However, Taren commended the recent development of a skatepark within the park, calling it a positive step to engage youth and encourage small-scale entrepreneurship. 'The Skate Board Park is a wonderful addition, but its surrounding areas must also be properly maintained to unlock its full potential,' he said. Taren called on elected representatives and MPS to ensure public recreational spaces are kept clean, safe, and accessible. 'This is not a luxury, it's a basic expectation from the people,' he said. Four homes affected in Kampung Panji blaze

LAHAD DATU: A wooden house was destroyed while three others were damaged in a fire at Kampung Panji, here, on Friday. District Fire and Rescue Station chief, Sumsoa Rashid said, his department received a distress call following the incident at 11.57am. Advertisement A team of firefighters was deployed to the scene in two fire machineries and EMRS vehicle. Police, SESB, Water Department and Civil Defense Force were also on the scene. 'Upon arrival, the team reported that four houses were involved in fire. One of the houses was completely destroyed, two others suffered 20 per cent damage while another house suffered five per cent damage. 'The team carried out the operation to extinguish the fire using two streams with three sprouts and managed to put the fire under control at 12.32pm,' he said. According to Sumsoa, no casualty reported in the incident. He said the operation ended at 1.44pm after the team made sure there was no other danger at the scene. Families of fallen Sabahans yearn for government recognition

PENAMPANG: Little is known about the first batch of Kadazans and other indigenous people who joined the rebranded Malaysian armed forces. The late Captain Boniface Jingulam, a Kadazan from Penampang, was one of them. He joined the army in 1964, a year after Malaysia was formed. His widow, Hilda Bisol, 78, recalls the sacrifice of Boniface, who passed on in August 2017.
