Bill Belichick's UNC boss hit with Jordon Hudson ban questions after firing rumors surface

New York Post14-05-2025
UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham avoided any mention of Jordon Hudson while discussing Bill Belichick's role as head football coach amid potential distractions in the program.
During an interview with ESPN on Tuesday, Cunningham denied a report by Pablo Torre that claimed Hudson, 24, was banned from UNC athletics — and praised Belichick, 73, for carrying himself as a 'professional individual.'
'Bill's been great to work with,' Cunningham said. 'He talked about practicing like a pro and he runs a professional organization that is teaching students how to be professional in all aspects of their life. He is a very determined, professional individual, and that's the way he carries himself and the way he conducts the program.'

When asked whether he was concerned about distractions, Cunningham said, 'Bill is an incredibly focused person.'
Cunningham spoke with ESPN after Torre reported Monday there 'is a real chance' Belichick won't be coaching for UNC in Week 1 of the 2025 college football season as the drama around the coach and his girlfriend have overwhelmed any discussion about the football team.
Cunningham did not directly address that report.

During a Tuesday appearance on 'SportsCenter,' Belichick said Hudson has nothing to do with his football program.
It was his first televised interview since her viral interjection during his 'CBS Sunday Mornings' interview that aired April 27 and served as precursor for multiple reports that alleged she's trying to control Belichick's career in order to benefit hers.
'That's really off to the side, it's a personal relationship,' he said while at the ACC Spring Meetings. 'She doesn't have anything to do with UNC football.'

Belichick told ESPN he discussed the situation surrounding his personal life with his team and that it won't be a distraction.
'I talked to the players when we meet with them,' Belichick said. 'We want to make the players the best they can be and giving them the best opportunity on and off the field.'
Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl winner, went on to emphasize his goal of making North Carolina the '33rd NFL team' by implementing a pro model.
The six-time Super Bowl winner added that he he isn't putting pressure on himself to set expectations in his first season coaching at the college level.
'Try to stack good days together,' Belichick said. 'Good day, come back, build higher the next day. It's not about where we're going to be X-number of months or weeks from now.'

Bengals sign Desmond Ridder to add depth behind Joe Burrow

Former starter-turned-backup Desmond Ridder has agreed to join the Bengals, adding depth behind Joe Burrow. Cincinnati officially announced Ridder's signing Sunday, filling out a quarterback room behind Joe Burrow that already includes Jake Browning and Payton Thorne. Ridder, who turns 26 before Week 1, brings prior starting experience along with multiple backup stints to Cincinnati. Advertisement After being made a third-round selection by the Falcons in 2022, he started 18 games — including 13 in 2023, when he threw for 2,836 yards, 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions with a 64.2 completion percentage. 3 Desmond Ridder is signing with the Cincinnati Bengals. Ridder has recorded 4,002 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, alongside 293 rushing yards and three rushing scores for his career. He had a stint with the Raiders in 2024, appearing in six games and making one start. 3 Desmond Ridder leaves the field after warm ups before their game against the Los Angeles Chargers at Allegiant Stadium on January 05, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ridder also played his college football at Cincinnati, where he helped lead the team to a 13-1 record in the 2021 season, earning an American Athletic Conference championship with a 35-20 win over Houston. The season concluded with a 27-6 loss to Alabama in the Cotton Bowl Classic. 3 Joe Burrow will be starting ahead of Desmond Ridder. Not all roster business is running smoothly in Cincinnati, though. First-round rookie Shemar Stewart remains unsigned amid disputes over his rookie contract. Veterans will report for NFL training camp on July 22. Meanwhile, star pass rusher Trey Hendrickson is holding out and reportedly seeking a long-term extension.

Chiefs Coach Andy Reid Discusses George Karlaftis Contract Extension

(Photo by) Just before 2025 training camp begins, the Kansas City Chiefs have locked up yet another integral and young player. Less than a week after signing guard and 2021 sixth-round pick Trey Smith to a four-year, $94 million extension, the Chiefs signed 2022 first-round pick George Karlaftis to a similar four-year $93 million contract extension, which includes $62 million guaranteed. 'We love having that. Our continuity is a big thing with your good, young players,' Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. 'It's great from a coaching standpoint.' Karlaftis' total contract value ranks seventh among defensive ends. And his average annual value of $23.25 million ranks eighth. (Both are just below Green Bay Packers defensive end and 2024 Pro Bowler Rashan Gary, who is on a four-year $96 million deal.) Karlaftis recorded 10.5 and 8.0 sacks the last two years, respectively, and has started 44 games out of a possible 51 game in three years. 'He's reliable,' Reid said. 'You can trust that he's going to be there and do the right things and go 100 miles an hour doing them.' Reid described Karlaftis as 'relentless' and said how well he's regarded on the team. Karlaftis was born in Athens, Greece, where he played goalkeeper for the under-16 national water polo team. That background helped him become adept at deflecting passes, and he has registered 15 passes defended in his three years. 'Some of it has to do with the hand-eye coordination,' Karlaftis said. With the goalkeeper's main job being blocking shots from the opposition, it served as great training for the future defensive lineman. The 2022 first-round pick started from Day One and has been a productive NFL player. But the question is how much he benefits from lining up right next to defensive tackle Chris Jones, who is perhaps the NFL's best defensive tackle and commands frequent double teams. Karlaftis, though, certainly has been successful. During his three years in the NFL, all he has known is Super Bowls, playing in three straight and winning two of them. The Chiefs have now locked up their 24-year-old defensive end for six more seasons through 2030. It's a good deal for Karlaftis too because he'll be young enough (29) at the end of this extension to potentially receive another long-term deal. 'That's a great thing,' Reid said. 'He's a heck of a player and he's done a great job here and he's profited from that. And our team also has profited from being around him. So it's a win/win.' The Karlaftis signing continues a wise trend for the Chiefs of re-signing their stalwarts from the 2021 and 2022 draft classes. In addition to the recent signing of Smith and Karlaftis, they've also extended three 2021 draft picks: center Creed Humphrey, linebacker Nick Bolton and tight end Noah Gray. The next target likely will be cornerback Trent McDuffie, Karlaftis' fellow first-round pick from 2022. 'It's an ongoing thing,' Reid said. 'You've got to have a good feel and a good plan for the future.'
