Service delivery drive finally reaches KaNyamazane and surrounds

The Citizen25-04-2025
The Service Delivery Drive Campaign (SDD) has moved on to wards 20 and 21 in KaNyamazane and its surrounding areas.
The SDD is an initiative of the City of Mbombela (CoM) to deal with service delivery backlogs. According to the CoM's mayor, Cllr Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko, the work in wards 18 and 19 was completed as per the lists provided by the councillors.
'We are now moving to KaNyamazane, which also needs our serious attention. Our team will ensure all grievances are attended to. Regravelling of Miyanga and Honeybee streets, and the Belladonna section will be prioritised. We are going to patch potholes, paint road markings and install speed bumps and crossings at various locations, including Tiphembeleni Primary School. The storm water drain in Mthunywa Street will be given special attention,' Makushe-Mazibuko said.

According to her, illegal dumping hotspots will also be cleared. These include those at Kamyanga, Vulamasango, eNyokeni, Spot 5 and the entrance to Tiphembeleni Primary School. Makushe-Mazibuko promised that once the SDD is completed, municipal officials will continue to bring services to the people.
She also said she was aware that there are areas that have not been attended to.
'They are not being ignored and will get the attention they need. I know there are trees in need of pruning and some potholes that need to be repaired. Those reported are going to be fixed. We must also keep in mind that the constant rains are also a challenge, as it keeps damaging our roads.'

She reiterated that non-functioning streetlights are being attended to. Residents should report issues to their ward councillors, or directly to the municipality.
'We plead with our residents to be patient with us as we are using limited resources to attend to their needs. Everything cannot be done in one day. I am aware that some roads are dilapidated and need to be rebuilt, but with the limited budget, it's impossible. However, we are going to maintain them,' Makushe-Mazibuko promised.

Construction delays in Schaapkraal leave residents frustrated and vulnerable to flooding

Residents in Schaapkraal express their frustration over delays by contractors. Image: Supplied Residents of Schaapkraal who for years appealed for decent roads now have a new worry, as contractors hired by the City have delayed construction, causing further damage to their homes and vehicles. In several letters and correspondence shared with the Cape Argus, irate residents said excavations have been left wide open. They also said the four-month project is now six months behind schedule with no explanation or communication from the City regarding the delay. 'Residents often discover excavations outside their driveways only when attempting to leave, posing risks in emergencies,' said residents in a joint communication about their grievances. 'Despite meetings and the contractor's inclusion in a WhatsApp group, communication remains poor, with residents initiating most discussions. 'Construction has occurred daily, including weekends and late nights, without prior notification. "Recent rains have brought constant night work from pumps and generators, also unannounced. "Unforeseen water shutdowns left residents without alternatives, forcing water purchases." Video Player is loading. 'The contractor had to assist in moving bins. The contractor admitted a poor initial pipeline installation, and despite multiple attempts, faces ongoing challenges without informing residents of the issues or mitigation plans,' they added. They said another risk was that children had to walk through active construction zones with heavy machinery due to inaccessible scholar transport. Ward councillor, Elton Jansen, said he was aware of the residents' grievances and that he had raised their concerns with officials. 'I note with the same concerns and urgency with the situation in 8th, 9th, and 10th Avenue as well as the flooding in various parts of Schaapkraal i.e. Schaap Road, Vlei Road,' he said in a letter shared with the Cape Argus. 'I understand the frustration and even though some of the insults are aimed at me as the councillor of the area I can assure you I am and have on an ongoing basis raised this with senior officials to deal with it and communicate with us on the ground what their plan of action is. 'I have inspected the pumping, and it is a waste of time. 'I drove the gravel roads, and it's unbearable to drive. 'I visited some residents who were affected by power outages as a result of the flooding and thanked them for their patience. 'I will be back in the area again to continue with my flooding inspections as various people, including informal settlements, have been severely affected.' Residents in Schaapkraal have been waiting for new roads and repairs. In response, the City on Thursday said two departments will meet on Friday morning and provide feedback in the afternoon. 10-hour power outage to affect parts of Cape Town next week

City of Cape Town technicians will begin maintenance work at 8:00 and aim to complete it by 18:00 on the same day, provided there are no unforeseen delays. According to the City, the power outage is necessary to improve long-term supply reliability in the area. 'The City advises residents in Silvertown of upcoming critical electricity supply interruptions for infrastructure maintenance,' the city stated in a statement issued this week. '[We] apologise for any inconvenience caused while the essential maintenance is being carried out.' On the scheduled date, power will be interrupted only in specific parts of Silvertown. The affected streets include Honeysuckle, Appledene, Agapanthus, and Geranium. Residents are encouraged to consult the detailed power outage map available at this link to confirm if their property will be affected. The city cautioned that 'the electricity supply could be restored at any time,' and urged residents to treat all electrical points live throughout the planned work. As a safety measure, they advised: 'Customers must please treat all electrical installations as live for the full duration of the planned maintenance work.' Once the power outage is over, residents should unplug sensitive appliances and keep them off until the power stabilises to avoid damage. Additionally, the city thanked the community for its understanding and cooperation. Residents with queries can contact the City's Call Centre at 0860 103 089 for further information. Sea Point promenade and Granger Bay upgrade complete

The City of Cape Town recently announced that its upgrade of the Sea Point promenade and Granger Bay parking area has finally been completed. According to the City, the project, which began in May last year, had been delayed due to the poor performance of the previous contractor. The prolonged construction, initially given a 12-month deadline, was pushed back until now, with Sea Point's Granger Bay parking and landscaping upgrade now ready for use. 'We thank residents for their patience while the works were under way and apologise for the prolonged construction period. Residents from across Cape Town can now enjoy the newly upgraded Granger Bay parking area and landscaping.' the City's Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews, said. 'The completion of the footway and coping at the Rocklands Beach is still due for repairs in the coming months pending a structural assessment of the concrete slab supporting the footway. We will keep residents informed of the progress,' Alderman Andrews added. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
