Special intensive revision of voter list gains momentum

Time of India29-06-2025
Patna: The ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar gained momentum on Friday, with polling station officials distributing enumeration forms among one crore electors by making door-to-door visits.
Bihar has become the first state in the country to launch such an intensive voter list revision drive, carried out under the guidance of the Election Commission (EC).
As part of this process, polling station officers, after proper training, have been tasked with the responsibility to verify, distribute, and collect the enumeration forms door-to-door. An EC official claimed that all political parties in Bihar are actively participating in the SIR.
So far, over 1.5 lakh booth level agents (BLAs) have been appointed to verify the voter list at each polling station.
Out of the 7,89,69,844 voters, approximately 4.96 crore were already included in the final revised voter list as on Jan 1, 2003, a report from the EC office said. These voters only need to confirm their entries and submit the filled enumeration form. Additionally, if either parent of a voter was included in the voter list as on Jan 1, 2003, the voter will not need to present any related documents for enrolment during the 2025 special intensive revision, regardless of their date of birth, the statement said.
To expedite the process, all district election officers have been instructed to seek assistance from local Anganwadi workers, Vikas Mitras, Jeevika Didis, and volunteers from NCC, NSS, and Nehru Yuva Kendra. These volunteers will not only help voters fill out forms, but also assist polling station officers in the distribution and collection tasks.

All-party meeting: Opposition demands PM Modi's reply on THESE issues

Leaders from various political parties attended an all-party meeting convened by the central government on Sunday, ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Among the leaders present were Congress MPs K Suresh, Gaurav Gogoi and Jairam Ramesh, Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde, Union Minister Anupriya Patel, NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule, BJP MP Ravi Kishan, and others. At the all-party meeting, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said the party will seek Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement on Trump's claims, 'lapses' in Pahalgam and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in Bihar. Gaurav Gogoi said it "will be very important for Prime Minister Modi to come to this House and put forth his views on" three subjects. These include: 1. The Pahalgam terror attack, Lieutenant Governor's Manoj Sinha's comment in it and US President Donald Trump's claim on "US-brokered" deal between India and Pakistan. "The statements coming from the US President today, in some way, raise questions on the dignity of India, the bravery of the Indian answers to the US President can be given only by the Prime Minister," Gogoi told news agency ANI. 2. Gaurav Gogoi also raised questions on the right of every citizen to vote and the concerns regarding the special intensive revision in Bihar. "...it is the duty of the Prime Minister to put forth the position of his government or the government's side inside the House.," he said. 3. Speaking about the importance of discussing India's defence and foreign policy, Gogoi said senior army officers have raised a 'very sensitive issue about the two-front axis that has been formed on our border with China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.' The Congress leader said that as the head of the government, it is "incumbent and moral responsibility" of the Prime Minister to speak to the nation on all these issues in Parliament. "I hope that the Prime Minister will fulfill his moral and ethical duty," he said. The Monsoon Session of Parliament will begin on July 21 and continue until August 21.

At all-party meet before Monsoon Session, Opposition presses Centre on Bihar SIR, Trump's ceasefire claims

An all-party meeting convened by the Union government on Sunday ahead of the Monsoon session of Parliament saw the Opposition raise a host of contentious issues — including voter roll revisions in Bihar, the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, and US President Donald Trump's controversial claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. While the government sought the cooperation of opposition parties for the smooth conduct of the House, the meeting quickly pivoted to pointed demands for accountability. Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, told reporters that his party had asked for a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Trump's remarks, what he described as 'lapses' that led to the Pahalgam attack, and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. 'It is incumbent on PM Modi to give a statement in Parliament on key issues raised by the Congress,' Gogoi said. The concerns were echoed by CPI(M) MP John Brittas, who also urged the PM Modi to address the Parliament on both the Pahalgam attack and Trump's ceasefire claims, which he says merit urgent clarification.

All-party meet: Pahalgam terror attack, Trump's ceasefire claims among issues flagged by oppn; key points

NEW DELHI: Day before the start of Parliament Monsoon session, an all-party meeting was convened by the government to seek cooperation for the smooth functioning of the House. However, the meeting quickly turned into a platform for opposition parties to put forward a list of pressing issues they plan to raise during the session. Top among their concerns are the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, US President Donald Trump's repeated claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan and the alleged electoral roll manipulation in Bihar under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Leaders from across the political spectrum participated in the meeting, setting the stage for the Monsoon session. Key points from the meeting: Government seeks cooperation, opposition flags serious concerns The meeting, aimed at ensuring the smooth conduct of the Monsoon session, was attended by leaders across party lines. The government was represented by Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju and minister of state Arjun Ram Meghwal. Opposition parties made it clear that cooperation in the House would hinge on the government addressing their key concerns. Congress demands PM's statement on Trump's ceasefire remarks, Pahalgam attack Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi and Jairam Ramesh participated in the meeting, with Gogoi stating, 'It is incumbent on PM Modi to give a statement in Parliament on the key issues raised by the Congress.' The Congress is pressing for answers regarding the Pahalgam terror attack , where perpetrators remain at large. They are also demanding clarity over Donald Trump's repeated claims that he mediated a ceasefire during India-Pakistan tensions. Later speaking to reporters, Gogoi expanded on these concerns : 'This time we have more hope than before that Prime Minister Modi will address the country through the House. Those important issues are Pahalgam, the things that the Lieutenant Governor said about it. A lot of time has passed and the government will have to put forth its point on it.""The statements coming from the US President today, in some way, raise questions on the dignity of India, the bravery of the Indian Army. The answers to the US President can be given only by the Prime Minister.""Secondly, important questions are being raised today regarding the right to vote. The way the Election Commission is shying away from talking to various political parties and is not giving clarifications... very important questions have also been raised about this. Being the head of the government, it is the duty of the Prime Minister to put forth the position of his government.""Today, this government is also bringing various bills regarding Manipur... The Prime Minister had said about Manipur that peace will come in a few months. Almost two and a half years have passed and we are not able to see an atmosphere of peace. The Prime Minister goes to small countries. But in a small state of our own country, where fire is still there, he is avoiding it for some reason. We hope for a positive discussion in the coming session.' AAP raises 'electoral scam' in Bihar, slum demolitions in Delhi AAP MP Sanjay Singh highlighted concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar, calling it a 'poll scam.' He said, 'SIR exercise should stop in Bihar. Electoral scam is going on… If the government does not answer, we will raise questions inside and outside the House.' Singh also demanded the government clarify Trump's ceasefire remarks and condemned the demolition of slums in Delhi. INDIA bloc sets agenda for Monsoon session The opposition INDIA bloc resolved to prioritise the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor fallout in Parliament. RSP MP NK Premachandran said, 'Revision of the voter list in Bihar and the attitude of the Election Commission will also be raised. Economic issues, foreign policy, and the Ahmedabad plane crash are on the agenda too.' He confirmed that all INDIA bloc members except the Aam Aadmi Party attended a preparatory meeting held earlier. NCP, DMK, RPI(A) among parties present Prominent attendees included Supriya Sule (NCP–Sharad Pawar faction), T R Baalu (DMK), and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale (RPI–A), indicating wide participation across the political spectrum. The government is expected to take note of the opposition's demands ahead of a politically charged session. Congress MP Pramod Tiwari outlines agenda Speaking to reporters, Tiwari said, 'Those involved in the Pahalgam terror attack have not been caught. We want the PM to directly answer our questions. Bihar SIR is also on our priority list.' He added that several other matters would be raised during the Monsoon session.
