
How Artificial Intelligence Is Reshaping Saudi Arabia's Labor Market
This shift does not signal the disappearance of jobs, but rather their redefinition. Routine tasks are giving way to roles requiring analytical thinking, digital fluency, and creativity. The very nature of employment is transforming from simply executing tasks to managing complex solutions.
AI is accelerating this evolution across key sectors including healthcare, manufacturing, and finance, where local case studies show how the technology is cutting costs and improving operational performance.
Yet, despite the opportunities AI presents for growth and job creation, significant challenges remain. Chief among them are high adoption costs, underdeveloped infrastructure, and a shortage of qualified professionals.
Addressing these issues will require coordinated efforts from the government, private sector, and educational institutions to ensure a balanced digital transformation, one that empowers human potential rather than marginalizing it.
Ali Al-Eid, a human resources expert, told Asharq Al-Awsat that digital transformation, future readiness, and awareness of key job skills are now central pillars of Saudi Arabia's national development strategy.
While some fear AI may lead to mass job losses, Al-Eid said it will instead reshape existing roles. He expects routine jobs to fade, replaced by positions that demand analytical, digital, and advanced interpersonal skills.
Employment will increasingly prioritize flexibility and innovation over years of experience, he added.
AI is boosting automation, enabling big data analysis, and improving the speed and accuracy of decision-making, he noted. These changes are reducing waste and enhancing efficiency in sectors like healthcare, logistics, finance, and human resources, where faster decisions and improved outcomes are already evident.
He stressed the need for comprehensive strategies that foster innovation, encourage the adoption of new technologies, and ensure a fair transition for workers. This includes investing in reskilling programs and providing social safety nets.
According to Al-Eid, the success of future employment initiatives hinges on the private sector's commitment to keeping pace with technological change.
Economic policy expert Ahmed Al-Shehri echoed these views, noting that AI is rapidly redrawing the contours of Saudi Arabia's labor market, fueled by Vision 2030's push to diversify the economy and drive innovation.
He said AI is automating routine tasks and improving work quality across public and private sectors. Based on global trends, he estimated that between 25 and 30 percent of existing jobs in the Kingdom could be affected by AI by 2030. At the same time, the technology will create new opportunities in high-tech fields and increase productivity by streamlining operations.
The oil sector is already seeing tangible benefits. Saudi Aramco, for example, uses AI for predictive maintenance, reducing costs and boosting operational efficiency by up to 20 percent. Al-Shehri added that many educational institutions and stakeholders are prioritizing future skill development to close the gap between conventional education and the needs of a high-tech economy.
He said current policies are capable of striking a balance between accelerating technological adoption and preserving existing jobs, thanks to incentives and public-private partnerships, such as those driving mega-projects like NEOM.
Tarek Mansour, senior partner at McKinsey, highlighted the findings of recent research by the Future Investment Initiative in collaboration with his firm. According to the study, automation and skill development are key drivers of productivity in the region.
It estimated that productivity could grow by 2.7 percent annually by 2030, driven by modern technologies like generative AI, which boosts human creativity in critical sectors such as healthcare and scientific research.
Mansour noted that the benefits of digital transformation extend beyond productivity gains. New jobs will be created, and talent shortages in specialized fields, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, could be eased.
Gulf countries already possess a strong talent pool and can launch large-scale skill-building programs, especially in strategic and technical sectors, to meet evolving labor market demands and improve youth employment prospects, he remarked.
Saudi Arabia, he added, has made impressive strides in embracing technology, with a clear focus on AI readiness and the development of digital infrastructure to keep pace with rapid technological change. A 2024 survey conducted for the study found that 56 percent of companies in the Middle East and North Africa are using AI, compared to 85 percent in the European Union and the United States.
However, Mansour pointed out that key barriers to adopting advanced technologies include implementation costs, infrastructure limitations, and a lack of skilled workers. In the Middle East, 52 percent of business leaders cited high costs as a major obstacle, while 45 percent pointed to infrastructure challenges.

How US adults are using AI, according to AP-NORC polling
Most US adults say they use artificial intelligence to search for information, but fewer are using it for work, drafting email, or shopping. Younger adults are most likely to be leaning into AI, with many using it for brainstorming and work tasks. The new findings from an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll show that 60 percent of Americans overall–and 74 percent of those under 30–use AI to find information at least some of the time. The poll highlights the ubiquity of AI in some areas–as well as its limits in others. Only about 4 in 10 Americans say they have used AI for work tasks or coming up with ideas, a sign that the tech industry's promises of highly productive AI assistants still haven't touched most livelihoods after years of promotion and investment. At the same time, wider AI adoption by younger Americans shows that could change. There's a particularly large age divide on brainstorming: About 6 in 10 adults under age 30 have used AI for coming up with ideas, compared with only 2 in 10 of those age 60 or older. Young adults are also more likely to use AI to come up with ideas at least daily. Young adults are most likely to use AI. Bridging the generations are people like Courtney Thayer, 34, who's embracing AI in some parts of her life and avoiding it in others. Thayer said she is regularly using ChatGPT to come up with ideas about planning what to eat while also having it calculate the nutritional value of the pumpkin-banana-oat bread she's been baking for years. 'I asked it to make a meal prep for the week then to add an Asian flair,' said Thayer of Des Moines, Iowa. 'It wasn't the most flavorful thing I've ever had in my life, but it's a nice stepping off point. More importantly, I use it for the amount so that I'm not over-serving myself and ending up with wasted food.' The audiologist has embraced AI at work, too, in part because AI technology is imbued in the hearing aids she recommends to patients, but also because it makes it easier and faster to draft professional emails. She avoids it for important information, particularly medical advice, after witnessing chatbots hallucinate false information about topics she spent years studying. Roughly 4 in 10 Americans say they use AI for work tasks at least sometimes, while about one-third say they use it for helping to write emails, create or edit images, or for entertainment, according to the poll. About one-quarter say they use it to shop. Younger adults are more likely than older ones to say they have used artificial intelligence to help with various tasks, the poll shows. Searching for information is AI's most common use. Of the eight options, searching for information is the most common way Americans have interacted with AI. And even that may be an undercount since it's not always apparent how AI is surfacing what information people see online. For more than a year, the dominant search engine Google has automatically provided AI-generated responses that attempt to answer a person's search query, appearing at the top of results. Perhaps defying emerging media consumption trends, 28-year-old Sanaa Wilson usually skips right past those AI-generated summaries. 'It has to be a basic question like 'What day does Christmas land on in 2025?'' said the Los Angeles-area resident. 'I'll be like 'That makes sense. I trust it.' But when it gets to specific news related to what's happening in California or what's happening to the education system and stuff like that, I will scroll down a little bit further.' Wilson, a freelance data scientist, does use AI heavily at work to help with coding, which she said has saved her hundreds of dollars she would have had to pay for training. She also occasionally uses it to come up with work-related ideas, an attempt to bring back a little of the collaborative brainstorming experience she remembers from college life but doesn't have now. When it first came out, Wilson said she also used ChatGPT to help write emails until she learned more about its environmental impact and the possibility it would erode her own writing and thinking skills over time. 'It's just an email. I can work it out,' she said. 'However many minutes it takes or seconds it takes, I can still type it myself.' Most don't use AI for companionship–but it's more common for young adults. The least common of the eight AI uses was AI companionship, though even that showed an age divide. Just under 2 in 10 of all adults and about a quarter of those under 30 say they've used AI for companionship. Wilson has no interest in AI companions, though she isn't surprised that others do because of the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on her generation's social experiences. 'I totally understand and sympathize behind why people in my age group are leveraging it in that way,' Wilson said. Thayer, the audiologist, also has no interest in AI companionship, though she tries to be polite with chatbots just in case they're keeping track. 'I mean, I am nice to it just because I've watched movies, right?' Thayer said laughing. 'So I'll say 'Can you make me a meal plan please?' and 'Can you modify this please?' And then I'll say 'Thank you.'' The AP-NORC poll of 1,437 adults was conducted July 10–14 using a sample drawn from NORC's probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the US population. The margin of sampling error for adults overall is plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

Dubai International Airport sets H1 passenger record with 46m travelers
RIYADH: Dubai International Airport handled 46 million passengers in the first half of 2025, marking its busiest six-month period on record despite regional airspace disruptions and global headwinds. In a press release, operator Dubai Airports said the 2.3 percent year-on-year increase underscores the continued strength of the emirate's aviation sector and the terminal's operational resilience. The growth came despite temporary airspace restrictions in May and June, which forced several Gulf carriers to reroute flights and adjust schedules due to heightened military activity and no-fly zone declarations in parts of the Middle East. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, said: 'DXB's continued growth through a period of regional challenges highlights the strength of Dubai and the UAE, the agility of our operations, and the commitment of our airport community.' In the second quarter alone, the airport handled 22.5 million passengers, a 3.1 percent increase over the same period last year. April was the busiest month of the quarter and the most active April on record, with 8 million travelers. Average monthly traffic during the first half stood at 7.7 million passengers, with daily volumes averaging 254,000. January was the busiest month, setting a new monthly record with 8.5 million passengers. In the second quarter alone, DXB served 22.5 million guests, an increase of 3.1% over the same period last year. He said the Dubai Airshow 2025 will be a standout event, poised to break previous records and highlight the bold vision driving the future of aviation and aerospace. 'Based on our performance to date and a positive outlook, we expect the annual traffic to reach 96 million this year, bringing us closer to the symbolic 100 million milestone,' added Griffiths. India remained DXB's top market in the first half of the year, with 5.9 million passengers, followed by Saudi Arabia with 3.6 million. The UK accounted for 3 million passengers, while Pakistan and the US recorded 2.1 million and 1.6 million, respectively. London was the busiest city destination with 1.8 million passengers, followed by Riyadh, Mumbai, Jeddah, New Delhi, and Istanbul. DXB also processed more than 1 million tonnes of cargo during the first half of 2025, a 0.1 percent increase compared with the same period last year. The airport is connected to more than 269 destinations in over 107 countries and is served by 92 international carriers.

Pope warns against undermining human ‘dignity' in AI, social media era
Pope Leo XVI on Tuesday called on the world to protect human 'dignity' online as it faces the 'challenge' of AI, at the Vatican's first mass for Catholic influencers. He was speaking as thousands of young Catholics are in Rome this week for the Vatican's Jubilee of Youth -- an event that takes place every 25 years -- and as the Catholic Church tries to promote its message online amid a fall in church attendance. 'Nothing that comes from man and his creativity should be used to undermine the dignity of others,' Leo told young Catholic social media figures at a mass in St Peter's Basilica. He called on the world to protect 'our ability to listen and speak' in the 'new era' of artificial intelligence. The Vatican is holding a two-day event bringing together what it calls 'digital missionaries and Catholic influencers' from around the world in a bid to promote its presence online. It is the first time the centuries-old institution holds such an event. He also called on Catholic social media influencers to convince others to create content that will 'entail seeking out those who suffer and need to know the Lord.' Since taking over the papacy in May, the pope -- an American mathematics graduate -- has repeatedly warned about the dangers of AI for young people.
